This episode delves into the world of Steely Dan, with a passion for their music and the times, one of the Imbalanced Brothers has more "prime exposure" to the band, but both of them show their understanding and love for the band, the boys, and their music! Sure, it's a story about Donald and Walter, but it's also a look inside the studio sessions, and more! When former co-workers, now podcasters, get together to discuss their podcasts, the conversation is wide-ranging and filled with discussion of radio past, and future. We discuss infusing artists, new and old, into the podcasts we host, our overall experiences as podcasters, and of course, THE MUSIC! It's a fun visit with an old friend, and now, top-ranked fellow podcast host! Thanks, Buzz! Here's a link to the "Takin' A Walk" podcast, to get you on the right path. This is a re-release of our #ProfilesInTheBlues episode, Bessie & The Wolf! Originally released 9/27/21: "Profiles In The Blues is a new umbrella concept on the podcast! In the initial episode, the Imbalanced Brothers delve deeper into the subjects of Bessie Smith, The Empress Of The Blues, (who's been mentioned before), and Chester Burnett's alter ego, Howlin' Wolf! Both were amazing forces of musical nature in their own unique way! These two under-appreciated American artists are part of the legacy that this podcast was founded to spotlight. While there will be many more episodes in this area, we invite you to enjoy this episode, and then dig back for our stories, and three episodes, about Robert Johnson, if you find the time! Take time to learn stuff about stuff you already know stuff about! Listen to this cool episode, and then get caught up here!!! When you think of bass players in the 1970's, so many names pop into your head, right? Well, Markus and Ray had the same thing happen. Sorting through, sifting their grey matter, they've whittled it down to their 5 Favorites, but also both of them have long lists of "honorable mentions," in this episode! (Go figure...) Often in studying Rock & Roll History, we find various points of view on the same subject, or event. It's the nature of things. But given a chance to talk with someone "who was there" is always great for the Imbalanced Boys. Suzi Ronson's friendship with Angie Bowie, and her entry into David's universe is part of the story, but with her attention to detail, she paints, more than tells, the tales included in this must-read book!!! Me & Mr. Jones, hits stores on April 4th! Be sure you listen to our conversation with her, to whet your appetite, at least! The Imbalanced History started, as many podcasts do, with a trailer in March 2019. 10 days later, Markus and Ray released their first actual episode, A Case For The Beatles. As the podcast evolved, and began musical illustration of episodes, they went back and "re-imagined" this fun ep. Now remastered for its 5th anniversary since release. Here's the original intro: "Since joining Pantheon, we have noticed a large number of people downloading A Case For The Beatles, which was our second episode, after our trailer (Questions And Answers). New subscribers, and Beatles fans alike will enjoy our holiday gift to our audience, a reimagining of this episode. Embellished by the music and words of "the lads," we hope you like it...again!" It's always fun when Annie Haslam stops by to visit on the podcast! This week, The Imbalanced Boys get some news about a new release! Keep up on details on the Renaissance web site! They also discuss Annie's upcoming show, opening for Rick Wakeman on his final solo tour on 3/23/24! Of course there's always some Renaissance history to discuss, including the band's history with Hipgnosis! Philly legends Larry Magid and Ed Sciaky both are part of this episode, as well! An adventure to Carl Perkins' place, a painting for Dolly, meeting Joan Baez, and her 5 Favorite Women Singers Of The 1970s! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Game Changers, in the eyes of the Imbalanced Brothers, are the albums, people, events, and things that changed the game, the music business, or how we view the whole damn thing! Nothing happens in a vacuum, and the rise and trajectory of Van Halen is no different. They had great managers, and label people guiding them on their way, and a major early supporter in Gene Simmons! Friends and family, and especially fans, showed them that their loud, boisterous music, and Dave's outlandish antics, were right on time for 1978! Markus and Ray talk about the impact of the band, this amazing debut record, "Uncle Ted" and Starwood, and those killer songs, track by track!!! Find all recent episodes on our web site, right here! No joke! The Imbalanced History podcast has evolved and grown in the last 300 or so episodes since we originally released this week's episode on June 11, 2019! It's been "enhanced" and expanded in some spots from the original release. We all felt that Zeppelin deserved the effort. Hope we succeeded, and that you like it half as much as you seem to have enjoyed Led Zeppelin: Descended From The Gods! That's why we're adding, enhancing, expanding, and why it's our choice for the final episode of Year 5! Thank you, all! Thanks to Crooked Eye, Pantheon Podcasts, and our other friends and sponsors! The 1970s was an extremely fertile time for music, in general, but especially for all flavors of Rock. Much as here in the 21st century, the influence of women on music of all genres was over-the-top. That impact was felt, maybe most of all, by Rock music. In previous decades, much of the music being made by women was written for them, fabricated in Pop music factories, but in the '70s that changed! This week, Markus and Ray dig back to that era of cool hairdos, bell bottoms and artificial fabrics to find their favorites from that era! There are a couple surprises along the way! How many will they have in common? Will they match any picks? Listen to answer these, and other questions! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
David Cross discusses his time inside and out of King Crimson, including his various solo outings and some Crimson-adjacent projects! Starting with the highly-influential Larks' Tongues In Aspic, he was part of the band in the mid-'70s, before finding his way to the long solo road, that he has been riding since. The conversation is informative, and funnier than the Boys expected! Enjoy some time with another part of the King Crimson legacy on this week's episode. This episode starts with a grunge.com article about albums released in '74, and turning 50, but The Imbalanced Boys realized there was much more to 1974 than the writer covered. How can you fail to include Rock n' Roll Animal by Lou Reed, as an example. So, Markus and Ray dive into that rabbit hole in the second half of this week's podcast. Starting with Joni Mitchell's Court And Spark, and rolling through the year, and capping things with a special release by a RRHOF group, who changed the sonic landscape that year! Incredible releases from Steely Dan, Rush, Frank Zappa, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Stevie Wonder and many more. A few artists (David Bowie, Kiss and Queen chief among them) had two releases in '74! So kick back in your bell bottoms and your favorite throwback bright vertical striped shirt, fire up the bong, and let's hop into the Imbalanced Time Machine: Set to 1974! We looked into an article on Louder Sound that talked about the longest runs on the Billboard album chart. That chart started as a Top 10 in the 1950s, expanding through to 1967 when it became the Billboard 200! That's name most of us know. This adventure just might include the most artists not previously profiled in one of our episodes: Lana Del Rey, Drake, Kendrick Lamar, Bruno Mars and Adele. Add chart champs of the '50s (Johnny Mathis, My Fair Lady OST), and this is a different musical journey. There's even a little controversy about Pink Floyd's "Dark Side" run (solved by the Research Team), and a ton more to discover. To add contrast the Boys also discuss the record-setting chart runs versus album sales. So many artist who have sold massive numbers, but didn't have a record-setter: The Eagles, Garth Brooks (both twice), AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, and The Beatles! Learn more about your ad choices. Jim Gordon was a kid who loved to play drums. Where would that love take him? Basically, everywhere! His inventive, musical percussion style created an incredible demand for his services. Having Jim on drums could change the fate of a recording project, and often did! The success and impact of Gordon's playing was legendary, long before the June 1983 murder of his mother, Osa. The voices "won" following a long, arduous struggle with his mental health. The voices in Jim's head led to a series of heinous actions, leading to murder and prison, after a decade of trying to get help for his then-undiagnosed mental illness. Author Joel Selvin (Altamont: The Rolling Stones, Hollywood Eden, Summer Of Love) visits The Imbalanced Boys to discuss his forthcoming book: Drums & Demons: The Tragic Journey Of Jim Gordon, out February 27th through Diversion Books! While the music plays a huge part in this episode, the discussion centers around Jim's story, his illness and its effects on the lives around him. Listen, sure! But be sure to read Joel's new book when it hits at the end of February! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Sometimes you hear a song you've known for forever, and one part jumps out of the speakers at you. That's the spark for this week's adventure into The Land Of The One Hit Wonders!!! Turns out THAT guy was Ian Bairnson! That sparks a discussion of his work after being a member of Pilot. His time recording with The Alan Parsons Project and Kate Bush, and his touring work are in this episode as well. But there's more to discuss and discover about the paths of the other members of Pilot, too! It's that kind of fun episode which starts out with one focus, but leads to unexpected finds and fun!!! Our friend David Uosikkinen, and his friends in The Hooters, had one helluva 2023: A new album, Rockin' & Swing, a major U.S. Summer tour for the first time in decades, and an expanded Euro tour! Then, word was, that David was the subject of a new documentary. The guys discuss The Heart Of The Beat with him, and the rest of the year that was 2023! Also in this episode? Word on the return of In The Pocket, and Dave's ITP podcast with Andy Vineberg! As you'll find out in this week's episode, 2023 has been quite a year for the Rock 'n Roll world, the arts, and for The Imbalanced Brothers! The guys talk about their year in episodes, marking a number of special guests along the way. They dig into the email bin at imbalancedhistory@gmail.com for listener interactions, opinions and ideas from you! That includes this article on The Jaggerz that listener friend Linda Neuman sent to us! The loss of figures in music, art and culture, in general, this year was unbearable. The burden of loss to almost every slice of arts and music life was severe, feeling the sting of Death. The Brothers weigh in from an imbalanced point of view. They finish off '23 with a focus on the 5th anniversary of the podcast in March, the 10th anniversary for Crooked Eye Brewing in February, and what the future holds! Almost every user gets a Spotify wrap-up for the year. Markus & Ray were already leaning towards this episode, originally released on February 6th. Then the year-end wrap-up hit the inbox, and it was a done deal. Funny thing is, The Imbalanced Boys both loved that ep, and were surprised to see it react so well immediately, despite the continued popularity of the band. Coming just months after the passing of The Songbird, Christine McVie may have boosted listens, but really, the Mac just never seems to wane in popularity. So, enjoy this Xmas Day release on your new device (if Santa brought you one), and please tell a friend to listen, as we approach our 5th anniversary as a podcast crew! (Okay, we lost that one guy when he went back to California...) Merry Christmas, hope you had a Happy Hanukkah and a Good Diwali! Here's to a Happy Kwanzaa, and a joyous New Year! You might be surprised, if you've enjoyed their Xmas treats before, at what is (and isn't) a part of this year's take on holiday music! So, kick back with some holiday grog, a hot toddy, or whatever sets the mood right, and enjoy this episode of 5 Favorites, and...have a very Merry Christmas & yes, a joyous New Year! Actually, it's that rare occasion when a planned episode doesn't work out, and you have to make a move! We remembered how much fun it was making the May 2022 episode about the film, Under The Volcano, which is awesome if you have not seen it. Later we'd do a follow-up episode, interviewing an interesting guy who wrote a book on the studio. More on that later! So, here we are flashing back to our 3rd year, as we close in on our 5th anniversary, March 1, 2024! Word soon on our plans to have a co-celebration of our 5th, and Crooked Eye's 10th on February 1st! Follow both of our social media stuff for updates! Learn more about your ad choices.
