The Intermediate Line Podcast

A podcast that shines an entertaining light on the Australian Flyfishing scene

Episode 202 - Tom Howe

Tom Howe, a West Oz Fly Angler, Cocos Island Guide and fly design professor. Look... if you want to hear some over thinking stuff about Saltwater Fly Fishing and fly design.. this show will be audio syrup for your ears. Tom and Chris dissect deep in to fly design, the difference in flats fishing from the East Coast to the West coast and ways to fast track your fishing skills. To be fair there is some talk about Bream on fly, but to balance that out we get a Cocos Island Guide to weigh in on "Do Bumpies Eat", the answer may shock you. We also talk about the IGFA record Trigger fish and Bonefish that was caught under Tom's guiding, and what its like progressing as a newbie during this modern time of social media influence. So so much,  a real smorgasbord of food for thought. This is one we have been looking forward to for a long time.    This show presented by - Power Pole, Beast Brushes, Kettafly, Nervous Water and Flats Craft.

Episode 199 - How to DIY import a skiff

We are back folks... we had a break and we address that first up in the show. That leads us to the crux of the episode. Importing a boat from another country to Australia can be a daunting task. The topic alone brings up a stack of opinions from those that have either never done it or have their own reason for doing it a certain way. On this episode we talk about doing it yourself and we also quote the actual costs of doing it as recently as this year.  We also talk about trolling motors and the advantages of dealing with a pro like Troy from Minn Repairs  This show is presented by Power Pole, Beast Brushes, Kettafly, Nervous Water and Flats Craft

Episode 198 - Micah Adams by Dave Bradley

We open up 2025 with our new direction and are honoured to have our friend of the show and host of the Rhum Lines Podcast, the great Dave Bradley interview his good friend and highly accomplished angler Micah Adams. We asked Dave to describe Micah -  Micah Adams is one of Australia’s most published and probably broadcast fishing writers and presenters. If you have him on your boat he’s also an “A” list angler with almost any tackle. His travel destination and species list is also something to aspire to.. With more than 20 years of fishing together these guys have some stories to get through.. We hope you enjoy the show as much as we have.

Recently, Voltz was on a camping trip with 2 other keen fisho's up on the very rugged and untouched fisherman's paradise... Cape York QLD. Episode 195 - River Trout Special

On this episode.. 2 Trout Guides and 1 Queenslander... We are joined by Shane Wakker of Baw Baw Flyfisher, and Jimmy Barwick of Snowy Valley Flyfishing. Both of these guys fish wild bodies of water, but both have a very different situation to chase Trout. The fact of the matter is that we at the Intermediate line simply don't have the experience to provide a technical show about Trout so we got 2 dudes on who know their stuff to do the heavy lifting for that aspect of the show.  On the show, we talk about a range of topics from the different ways to catch trout ( Dries, Nymphing, Streamers), rods, casting, lines as well as a bit of a deep dive on fly terminology. As the host, I definitely came away much wiser about Trout fishing in Australia and it was inspiring enough for me to want to head south in the not too distant future.   This show is brought to you by Nervous Water, Kettafly, Power Pole, Beast Brushes and Flats Craft.

Dan Collins is a permit Centurion who is notoriously quiet.... Episode 188 - James Caves Bermi Fly

On this episode we are very pleased to present a true gentleman of the game and a master of the most accessible fisheries that we have in Australia.. Mr James caves. James, or Jimmy is not only a connoisseur of fine Rums but one of the most pragmatic fly fishos I know. His observational skills that have translated to his tying, his gear selection and fishing are worth paying attention to. On this show, we have included Jimmy from the start, and sure.. this really is a pub chat but for the observant, there is true gold to mine from this show. Jimmy is one to watch if you find yourself overloaded with information about Flyfishing.. a simple and whittled down approach that is providing more results than most in a tougher fishery than most could contemplate. We truly hope you enjoy this episode with long term friend of the show James Caves.   This show is brought to to you by Nervous Water, Kettafly, Power Pole, Beast Brushes and Flats Craft

Episode 186 - Jillian Tisdale

On Episode 186.. Jillian is a monster on the bow !! That could be the subject of this show in itself, but to expand further let me first say that it was an honour to have Jillian on the show. Jillian is super immersed in the Fly Fishing lifestyle to say the least. A native Floridian, Jillian is the manager of the Seven Mile Fly Shop located in Marathon Florida an employee of Captains for clean water, a Tournament Angler and a record chaser. On this show we chat to Jillian a lot about Tarpon, how she caught the Tarpon bug, Her experience in the industry that led to now, and chasing records which is off the back of a great technical discussion about Tarpon leaders, the knots, the rules and the detail that goes into landing dinosaurs on 16lb test. We also talk about all this and what living within the fold of the Huff family means to her in addition to her very healthy respect she has for the traditions and rules she has for the sport.  This is a very inspirational chat that is about a self made person who has given it all to the Silver King.   This show is brought to you by Nervous Water, Kettafly Apparel, Power Pole, Beast Brushes and Flats Craft

Not only do we get into the weeds about those swimming blue bolt cutters... we also talk about bus sized GT's in knee deep water, Milkies eating shrimps off the sand, and one one of the best Permit sessions Al has had in 40 plus years of fly-fishing. We also break down the reason you suck.. by that we mean how observant are you and just how credible are your observational skills.. That's right the problem your not getting better could be a real easy fix. Are you heading on a trip away? This one is for you... We talk about the most common mistakes the inexperienced make when heading away to places like Christmas Island. Man this is a great episode... school is in with this one.

Episode 183 - The Big Questions

Whether its Voltz getting those 2am phone calls or messages to either of us over social media or even in person, we get a lot of people asking us questions. On this episode, we get through some of the more popular ones or commonly overlooked aspects of fly fishing that could make your life so much easier.  Topics include (but prepare for typical digression); Loop to loop connections - you could be ruining your fly line Ever had your rod ferrules stick ? we talk about proven way to get them apart Weedguards - Are they fish guards are they gods gift to fly tyers or are they the dumbest things ever. Flies that teach technique to beginners that also are worth tying to catch fish  Selecting a fly reel - The shops are going to hate hearing this... but we want to further the sport. A beginners guide to reel selection Feathers - The difference between Saddles, Capes, Necks and Schlappen also Grizzly and non Grizzly How to fish a Crab fly - To move it or not to move it... that is not the only question.  A strong and definite description to what is sight fishing... An over used phrase that when used incorrectly is like nails on a chalkboard to a lot of people.   Stacks of info on this show, we haven't had a meaty educational show for a while, we hope you get a bit out of this one.  This show is brought to you by Nervous Water, Kettafly, Power Pole, Beast Brushes and Flats Craft
