I thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to interview Safia Porter and hope you do also. She is warm, caring, and visionary. She actually selected the same word to describe herself. Safia shared a story from her childhood about her love for the performing arts & music. She believes it helps to awaken our imagination and we should all lean into our inner child. I totally agree with her and have experienced a direct relationship with music and how it impacts my emotions. What about you? Her life is spent on making a positive impact in the world. She is part of an organization called Easy Water for Everyone. Here is a sobering question - Think about drinking water that is brown? That should make you pause for a moment. There are 663 million people in the world that lack access to clean water. Easy Water for Everyone delivers clean pure water to remote villages with contaminated water sources. They use simple sustainable technology that does not require electricity and is validated by research. This makes the water safe to consume. There are now 35 village sites with these water filtration devices in developing countries to provide clean drinking water to the villagers. Do you want to make an impact? You can, Safia shared that there will be a Water & Health conference in October 2024 at University of North Carolina. The theme is “Imagine a Day Without Water.” https://www.easywaterforeveryone.org/ Lastly, one of my favorite questions is what is the best mentoring advice she would like to share. She took us back to advice her father gave her. “Keep going no matter what life gives you.” Like Dory - just keep swimming. We hope you enjoy this week's episode of The Intern Whisperer. Denise Musselwhite is the founder of Tech and Thrive. She is a dynamic person that is memorable. We have been connected through a number of Women’s groups that focus on technology. One of the words she shared to describe herself is Deliberate, and the definition of this word means to carefully think or talk something through. Slow and measured, the pace of this kind of careful decision making. As the daughter of immigrants to the US she learned to move through life with a heavy focus on her serving her clients. She believes this is essential for success for her clients as well as her own business. She grew up in an entrepreneurial family that focused on service. She helped her family by translating technical writing into Spanish for her parents. When thinking through what she wanted her career to be, she knew it would be in technology. She was the first gen in her family to attend college and started with Valencia College when it was a 2-year college. As a woman in technology and working her way to become a Chief Information Officer, she represents less than 2% of the workforce as a latina woman in the tech world. She started her own business because she grew up watching her family be entrepreneurs. She went back to get her masters degree when she turned 45 and focused her master’s thesis on the barriers that hold women back in their careers. Before COVID, she discovered that stem careers focused more on men rather than women. Women are still not represented in technology leadership roles. Only 26% are leaders in the tech world. Less than 3% Latinas make it to the top of the tech leadership. When asked what is the best mentoring advice you want to share with our listeners? Her response was that in order for you to accelerate your own growth and development you have to understand who you are and decide who you are. If you allow someone to decide who you are for you. One needs to understand what you need and a strategy with a plan of action to move towards your strengths We hope you enjoy this week's episode of The Intern Whisperer. I have known Michael Weiss for quite some time through his day job with UCF Incubator as a manager over two incubator sites. What I didn’t know is that he is an entrepreneur, graduated with hospitality as his field of study, and that he has quite a bit of knowledge and experience in the sports industry. When I asked him what his five words are that defined him, he shared that he likes to have fun. One of the short stories he shared was about a new minor league basketball team that he had a job with. He had the opportunity to come up with slogans and his idea was selected. The team was the Pitbulls, and the slogan that was a “slam dunk” (pun intended) was "Meet the Pitbulls unleashed". Michael is interesting because he works every day with startup founders and is a wealth of knowledge and demonstrates his desire to help others achieve greatness. His startup is Room Rite and he decided to launch when he identified a problem when planning a family reunion. He noticed there were very few hotels that offered affordable room rates. The hotels were overpriced and had little inventory. Michael wondered how often hotels have rooms that are not picked up during conferences. Taking you to the end of this first chapter of his startup journey. He won 4th place at the Rollins College Venture Competition and received an equity free $5,000 prize. Please tune in to hear his interview and learn more about what he thinks the hospitality industry will look like in 2030. We hope you enjoy this week's episode of The Intern Whisperer. Emily Walker is a vibrant woman that believes that using color in your wardrobe says a lot about your personal and business brand. For those that can see her picture on the thumbnail or in our social feeds you will better understand what I mean by that. I kicked off the show by asking my guests to describe themself using 5 words. Two of these words she selected were the epitome of her essence. Because she was raised in a challenging home situation, resilience is an important word that she believed saved her from being a negative statistic. As a single parent that lived in Section 8 Housing she had to overcome challenges in life. School was a safe place because of the learning opportunities and establishing friendships. The second she selected was determined. Her belief is that this ties to resilience because she was able to overcome obstacles in her life. She gives more details in the interview and we invite you to hear more about her personal story there. Emily is launching a new workshop called the Five Pillars of Personal Branding as part of her signature workshops. Be sure to listen and reach out to her to learn more. We hope you enjoy this week's episode of The Intern Whisperer. Sean Pinnock, the CEO of Avalon, which is a human centric game studio, was my guest on The Intern Whisperer. When he was a child, he envisioned the future of games. His inspiration came from Ready Player One - which is a book by Ernest Cline that later became a movie. This shaped his thinking of what the world - Meta - could be as a VR experience. When sharing his mentoring advice, he reminds us to learn and be content with who you are today; the second piece of advice is to be determined. Determination will take you further in your life journey.
