Abundant clean energy is central to the decarbonization of the global economy. Yet, the production of wind, solar and geothermal power, as well as energy storage requires massive amounts of natural resources such as lithium, cobalt, nickel, and copper, to name a few. The best land ores are already being mined from rainforests and pristine landscapes and generate large toxic waste. The question is: How can humanity close the natural resource gap to achieve the transition to clean energy by 2050? To address this question, I have invited: Gerard Barron, the CEO and Founder of The Metals Company, that will enable the battery-powered shift to clean energy and electric vehicles "with the lightest planetary touch". Gerard is a builder of global companies in battery technology, media, and future-oriented resource development, and on a mission to help transition Earth away from fossil fuels and toward a circular-resource economy. And Daniel Schmachtenberger the Founder of the Civilization Research Initiative and its publication, the Consilience Project . Daniel is recognized as a deep thinker on the topics of catastrophic risks and has made novel contributions to the field in terms of theoretical insights on how to address issues of exponential technology, planetary boundaries, and coordination challenges. He also helps advise strategy on applied initiatives towards these goals. My co-interviewer is systems scientist and futurist Dr. Anneloes Smitsman. In this interview, we discuss: 2:52 Meta Crisis, catastrophic and existential risks, planetary boundaries, exponential tech, nuclear tech, environmental crisis, pollution, materials economy, AI, nano tech 16:32 IEA, 600% more metals needed for circularity, the energy needs for the transition to carbon neutrality 19:37 abyssal zone, nodules, robot on the ocean floor, polymetallic nodules, key metals for energy transition, low bio diversity, deep ocean mining, International Seabed Authority, mitigating the plume, no waste, real game changer for the mining and metals industry, environmental impact study, biodiversity 25:45 peer reviewed journals showed that you can reduce CO2 emissions by more than 90% when you build a battery cathode using these rocks compared to the land-based alternatives, 90% less freshwater when we process nodules compared to land-based ores, nickel, Convention of the Law of the Sea 33:07 Strict regulation, Corporate sustainability, noise regulation 37:42 University of Hawaii, National Oceanography Center, Great Barrier Reef 41:13 toxic waste product, mining, tropical rainforests, fracking, tar sands, meta-analysis on biodiversity metrics 52:22 NASDAQ TMC, The Metals Company 1:13:41 tradeoffs between surface mining and alternative energy storage technologies, how to create a closed loop material economy Enjoy the show and share it widely! How Practical is Sustainability? While several governments have launched their new green deals to implement the Paris Accord and the UN Agenda 2030, Corey Glickman and Jeff Kavanaugh have provided a timely, much-needed, and actionable guide on how to make it happen. It is called "Practical Sustainability: Circular commerce, smarter spaces, and happier humans" and is a well-researched and science-based handbook that shows in detail how to achieve environmental targets and carbon neutrality through circular commerce and exponential technologies across industries including smart cities. This book should be required reading for anyone involved with sustainability, intelligent buildings, and supply chains, because it is illustrating how technology combined with physical environments can elevate human potential while ushering in a greener, more prosperous future. And this is why, I have the great pleasure to present to you my recent interview with the authors Corey Glickman and Jeff Kavanaugh. Named among the top 100 influential designers of the decade, Corey Glickman is VP of Sustainability, Smart Spaces, and Strategic Design at Infosys. He is a member of MIT's Global Technology Advisory Board and faculty expert guest lecturer with Singularity University. Jeff Kavanaugh is adjunct Professor at the Jindal School of Management at the University of Texas at Dallas and Vice President and head of the Infosys Knowledge Institute, the research and thought leadership arm of Infosys. In this interview, they take us through the most important topics of their latest book, Practical Sustainability, including the following: • How can we reduce 40%, of greenhouse gas emissions caused by the construction operation of buildings including circular supply chains • How to apply circular economy thinking within the built environment in smarter spaces including commercial ones? • What is the definition of sustainability and circular economy within the context of digitalization - and why Spiral Economy would by a better term than circular economy? • What is the role of mindshift? • Where and how can we implement Practical Sustainability and how to make it financially feasible too? • Decarbonization of energy through new kinds of energy transmission • Sustainable cities, population shifts, reconstruction or reestablishment of existing infrastructures, architecture, design & build, future proof, Artificial Intelligence, and other great opportunities Enjoy the show and share it widely! As far as I am concerned, Daniel Schmachtenberger ("The War on Sensemaking") is one of the most brilliant thinkers on the planet today. He is a founding member at The Consilience Project, an organization that is focused on making accurate sense of current planetary developments with the intention to prevent global catastrophic risk. In this podcast, Daniel and I discuss a wide range of topics including the following: * What kind of thinking do we need to better understand and address current existential problems? * What have all these problems in common and how can we address them better? * Which powers are currently ruling the world and why none of them is democratic? * What is radical fragility and why is GDP a dreadful metric? What metric is better? * Are we currently fighting World War III ? * Are you curious yet? What exactly is value? Obviously, we associate value with what we value personally but also with what is valued in our own culture and social environment, including ethics and morals. As we awaken to the importance of values, we see not only how the success of our business depends on them but also our future. Money Speaks The financial information tends to be a good way to convince people empirically of the value investing approach, aka Conscious Capitalism. Research shows that corporations with a culture based on sustainability and higher ethical values have also performed well financially—on average, eight times better than S&P 500 companies. The Conscious Capitalism movement, started in 2005 by John Mackey, who founded U.S. food retailer Whole Foods, is one manifestation of this trend. Under the leadership of Mackey, Whole Foods had a 40 percent higher ROI than other types of organizations over a period of 10 years. The shareholder value for investors in Whole Foods, which was sold to Amazon in 2017 for US$ 13.7 billion, grew between 1995 and 2006 to more than 1800%. What are the value characteristics of a conscious capitalist company? Companies such as Whole Foods, Stoneyfield Farms, REI, or Puma are financially successful also because, according to research, they cultivate values such as trust, integrity, transparency, caring, passion, and fun in addition to love, interdependence, loyalty, and the feeling of oneness. More importantly, these companies are led by conscious leaders such as Whole Foods founder and self-identified integral thinker, John Mackey. This is why, it is with great pleasure that I present to you in today’s podcast episode, Carter Phipps. Together with Whole Foods founder John Mackey, and Steve McIntosh, Carter is the co-author of the Wall Street Journal bestseller Conscious Leadership. Carter Phipps is an integral thinker, a visionary writer, a business futurist, and evolutionary. He is the author of the book Evolutionaries: Unlocking the Spiritual and Cultural Potential of Science’s Greatest Idea and co-founder of the Institute for Cultural Evolution. Conscious Leadership and the Mindshift In this podcast episode, Carter reveals the leadership characteristics of a conscious capitalist such as Whole Foods founder John Mackey and provides a roadmap for what it means to be a value-based entrepreneur and a business innovator that contributes to the great mindshift. He challenges conventional business practices to rethink outdated standards and shows what it means to embark on a life-long personal growth journey that leads to self-actualization, outgrowing one shadows, and living a life of purpose. My interview partner today is former member of the European Parliament and president of the Club of Rome, Anders Wijkman, member of the Swedish Royal Academy of Sciences and Chair of Climate KIC. In this videocast, Anders Wijkman discusses how to start the economy post Covid and, more importantly, how to transform it to become sustainable to meet the current needs. Anders insists that education and science have to get rid of their silos and reductionistic ways, and take center stage in teaching key players how nature really works. In his view, "economists are the worst [educated] because they they learn absolutely nothing about how the planet works, so they put an economic and technological system on top of nature.” He offers his thoughts on how to restructure the economy including its cost structure. For example, manufacturing a car costs nothing compared with its impact on nature, natural resources, and pollution. From an investor’s perspective, Anders thinks that our "taxation system, it's very, very skewed with only about 5% of taxes and fees related to the environment, energy and pollution and resources” making "the whole cost structure flawed” which affects investors, businesses and entrepreneurs. Garry Jacobs is a fellow member of the Club of Rome, the president of the World Academy of Art and Science and CEO of the World University Consortium. He is an American-born transdisciplinary thinker, author, and researcher who has lived in Pondicherry, India for many decades. He was widely influenced by Sri Aurobindo and his integral philosophy of consciousness evolution, which Garry applies to business, management, social development and psychology. Garry's passion is consciousness evolution through human, natural, and social capital. In this interview, he discusses the requirements a New Green Deal ought to have in order to succeed, particularly from an Indian perspective but not limited to it. He argues that money is in abundant supply and not the issue when it comes to restarting the economy post COVID-19; instead, we need the political will. Garry reminds us that the U.S. has managed to create 100 million jobs over the past century and shows how it can be repeated as soon as we stop draining the abundance created at the bottom of the pyramid to fill a few pockets at the top. In this exciting interview, he outlines his strategy on how to leverage the power associated with money to shift not only outdated economic systems but also the dogmas of academia, education, and climate denial. Professor Dr. Ernst Ulrich von Weizsäcker is an icon of the sustainability movement and a former member of the German parliament. He was president of the Club of Rome and a professor at several renowned universities and institutes, including the UN Centre for Science and Technology. Ernst is the founder of the Wuppertal Institute, which he developed into a leading think tank on energy efficiency, material flows and climate policy. In this program, Ernst expresses his view that one major reason why communism failed is because its prices didn't reflect the economic truth. In a similar way, he suspects that capitalism could go down too if its prices don’t begin to reflect the ecological truth soon. In drawing from his latest report to the Club of Rome, Come On, von Weizsaecker outlines several ways of how to address current systemic challenges and paints a positive outlook on our future. He gives hope and reminisces from his time as a member of the German parliament where he was instrumental in introducing an ecological tax reform, which taxed "what we don't want and untaxed or reduce taxes for what we want…By making it more profitable to lay off kilowatt hours instead of people, this system has saved and created some 300,000 jobs in Germany.” Enjoy this very special show! Dr. Mariana Bozesan interviews Julia Ormond, Actress and Philanthropist In this interview, world-class actress Julia Ormond shares her journey on how she became a human rights advocate and a passionate voice against forced labor, human trafficking, and for more transparency in supply chains. For Julia, this is a very personal issue and it should be for you too. Why? Because every time we drink a cup of coffee, wear a piece of clothing or a handbag, we become unknowingly complicit with those who exploit women and children to manufacture our luxury goods. By listening to Julia, you will be as surprised (and enraged) as I was to learn that today, there are still 40.3 million enslaved people worldwide and 24.9 million who live under forced labour conditions. He takes various perspectives from individuals to governments and supra-national organizations and singles out the fault lines of our financial and economic systems. Moreover, he offers lucid explanations on why we need a polluter pays law, why we need to expand transparency to include existing investments for large and small holders, why we need more research and development for integrated reporting and sustainability metrics, and much more. In this program, Barrett focuses on one of the most under noticed, yet highly leveraged, areas in life that can help make significant improvements and ultimately lead to the future we all want. And that is the necessary mind shift in you as an individual but also through your function as an investor, entrepreneur, politician, decision maker and other leadership activities. He insists that without this shift in mindset, we will not be able to facilitate the large scale transformation that we need. But, he gives hope by showing exactly how to do that; and how to do it fast. Enjoy the show! John Fullerton considers 2020 to be a momentous leap in humanity’s evolution with profound ramifications that go well beyond previous revolutions from agricultural, industrial, to informational. If we want to create sustainable economies, we must copy nature and living systems, says he. In this videocast, John introduces the 8 tenets of his framework that he called Regenerative Capitalism and which can be found in greater detail in the book “A Finer Future: Creating an Economy in Service of Life” that he co-authored. My guest today is fellow deep impact investor, TONIIC founder and Club of Rome colleague, Dr. Charly Kleissner. He believes that the deeper meaning of wealth is to make a positive contribution to humanity and the planet. He sees impact investing not as an intellectual exercise, but as an expression of who he really is. Thus, the main conversation in this program gravitates around the short, medium and long-term interventions that should be made in order to restart the economy following the COVID-19 pandemic. Charly insists on restructuring and forgiving loans in the short term to all those who have been hit the hardest by the pandemic so they can strengthen their health, recover their economic prowess and regain their purchasing power. Moreover, he thinks that providing blended capital in the long and medium term would help transform the investment industry toward becoming more sustainable and help create a more resilient economy. Also, he dives into the role exponentially growing technologies in the current landscape and how we can leverage them to ensure Deep Impact and the future of life on the planet. Dr. Kleissner co-founded KL Felicitas Foundation (www.klfelicitasfoundation.org), and Social-Impact International (www.social-impact.org), which help social entrepreneurs worldwide to accelerate and increase their impact. Dr. Kleissner co-founded Toniic (www.toniic.com), and the ‘100% Impact Network’, global networks for impact investors. Dr. Kleissner is Chairman of the Board at ImpactAssets (www.impactassets.org), and serves on the Advisory Board of the Global Hub Company (www.the-hub.net) and the High Level Advisory Board of UNSIF (undp.socialimpact.fund). Dr. Kleissner has over twenty years of experience as a senior technology executive in Silicon Valley companies like NeXT and Ariba. Dr. Kleissner earned his M.S. and Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Technology, Vienna. In this videocast Hazel discusses how the COVID-19 pandemic is (mis)handled in the US, under which circumstances people would gladly pay pollution taxes, and how the USD11 trillion stimulus package should be used to ensure a sustainable economic recovery. She reminds us that Los Angels would still be a village if the Hoover Dam project hadn’t been launched during the Great Depression of the 1930s and insists on taking advantage of the current crisis to implement the New Green Deal to ensure a sustainable future of life.
