I(o)t takes a village

Ever heard the saying, "It takes a village"? Well, that couldn't be more true for building IoT solutions today!📺 In this episode of the IoT Show, we chat with Brandon Satrom from Blues about how the IoT industry has totally transformed. We’ve gone from a world where you had to DIY every single thing, to a place with a plethora of platforms all trying to be the one-stop shop. Now, we're in a much smarter phase—picking the best parts from different companies to build something amazing.Brandon shares the scoop from Blues' perspective, a company that makes awesome hardware modules to give your devices seamless connectivity. ⚠️ TEASER ALERT: we learn where Blues 🎶 got its name fromWe also touch on The Things Conference, which is proof that the "it takes a village" idea is catching on. They’re expanding beyond just LoRaWAN to include all sorts of IoT tech. It's all about the ecosystem, and working together to make IoT work for everyone.Learn more about Blues 👉 https://blues.comCheck out The Things Conference 👉 https://thethingsconference.com

No AI powered Smart Buildings without Digital Twins

Are the digital and physical worlds able to sense and interact with each other? What does it take to make this a reality?Short answer: Digital twins!Who better than Bert Van Hoof, CEO at Willow, to attest to the importance of Digital Twins to make sense of the huge amount of heterogeneous data that smart buildings generate. If you have never heard about Willow, that's because their technology is hidden and as I like to say: the best tech is the one you don't see Learn more at https://willowinc.com/

How far has Vision AI come over the past decade

Dr. Andreas Savvides started his career over a couple of decades ago at Yale, leading research on wireless sensor networks, embedded systems, and sensor-driven applications for energy efficiency, security and healthcare. He rapidly realized the commercial potential of IoT and Edge AI and went on creating a SaaS energy analytics platform before many. Passionate about technology, he joined Cognex in 2018 to lead the company's edge intelligence efforts.Suffice it to say: Andreas knows a thing or two about Vision AI and its applications in the industry and shares with us a unique perspective on how far Edge AI has come, where it's going and how fast.🔗 Learn more about Cognex: https://www.cognex.com🤝 Connect with Andreas: https://www.linkedin.com/in/andreasgsavvides

Have you heard of ambient IoT?

Many IoT devices run on batteries for obvious reasons (remote and mobile location, critical enough to not rely on grid power only, you name it). But batteries have shortcomings: they have a limited lifespan, you need to constantly minimize energy consumption, hence reducing what can be done, which limits the hardware choices as well...More and more IoT devices manufacturers are considering and adopting energy harvesting solutions such as solar, allowing their devices to generate energy from their environment. This is known as Ambient IoT.It's becoming even more important to consider energy production and consumption holistically (tech, cost, AI, ...), it is a system problem, not a component one. And for that you need the right tools. With Jeff Crystal from Voltaic and Björn Rosqvist from Qoitch we delve into the fascinating new world of ambient IoT, discussing considerations, pitfalls, tooling, and more.🔗 Learn more at https://www.qoitech.com/ and https://voltaicsystems.com/🙏 This episode is powered by IoT Stars https://iotstars.com

When it comes to training AI models for the Edge, bad data produces bad models

The Edge AI Foundation recently put together a challenge, proposing to Computer vision engineers, Data scientists, AI engineers and researchers to produce the best Vision AI models for the Edge using a large open source dataset. Participants were to approach the problem from the perspective of the models or from the perspective of the data.Kais Bedioui, Computer Vision engineer, was in the later camp and tells us how he used off-the-shelf AI models to clean up the large dataset, identifying non-labelled images or gaps and errors images annotations before even starting to train a model for the Edge.🔗 Check out Kai's project at https://github.com/kais-bedioui/Wake_Vision_Challenge_Data_Centric_Track🙏 This special episode is sponsored by the Edge AI Foundation https://www.edgeaifoundation.org/

The IoT Watchmen debate: is MQTT holding back IoT?

What if some of the IoT technologies we think are essential are actually holding us back? Or rather, should we really be focusing and fighting that much around technology implementations? This conversation on the #IoTShow takes a wild turn when two IoT experts, whom I like to call the IoT Watchmen, Rob Tiffany, Director at IDC and Rob Van Kranenburg, Senior Policy and Communication expert, suggest waving goodbye to MQTT and Kubernetes. The secret tool IoT developers swear by for energy efficiency 🔋

Have you ever wondered how much power your IoT device really consumes and what the impact of your software has on energy consumption? I mean, really measured it? What if there was a way to know for sure, to optimize it as soon as during development and then leverage the same tools to do diagnostics and maintenance? "Energy is the key aspect, not really as a primary product feature, but to achieve the objective of whatever that product is." Matt Liberty invented JouleScope, an affordable, practical, and customizable device that can measure energy usage from microamps to amps with ease giving you real time insights into your device's energy consumption.
