The “best” is not just a title. The “best” achieved something extraordinary. And that's really what this podcast is about. So today, I’m looking at the 5 best investors in the world, what they knew and what we can learn from them to live wealthier lives. And, with me today, I have my friend Merrick. He’s the professor who signed the letter that got me kicked out of grad school. So he’s a smart man. I write about all my podcasts! Being informed is getting harder and harder. Everyone has an agenda. Some help you. Some get you to stay tuned it. Others get you to question. I want to question. Because that’s we’re growth is. So I brought Tim Dillon on the show. He’s a stand-up comedian. Which means he does MORE than just comedy. It means he looks at the world with a different lens. He looks for the absurd. And points it out. So we can all see the hypocrisy in life, in history and in our own heads. Learning conspiracies and comedy can be entertainment. Or it can be a learning ground for questioning, discernment and curiosity. I choose the ladder. Here’s my interview with Tim Dillon.   I write about all my podcasts! I've been waiting for this moment. For seven years. Because 7 years ago my good friend Kamal Ravikant SELF-published a book. He uploaded it to Amazon. And sold half a million copies. This was without a publisher. Or a marketing team. Or any advance money. He just did it on his own. And it was hugely successful. He was able to use this money to pay for his rent in San Fransisco and basically all of his living for years. The book is called, "Love Yourself Like Your Life Depends on It." And now he's rewriting the book. And expanding on it. Because he got a lot of questions about the mechanics of loving yourself. People understood from the first copy why it was valuable. But they hoped for more guidance on how to do it themselves. So that's what this podcast is about. It's how to love yourself like your life depended on it. Plus we also talk about the benefits of self-publishing, bypassing the gatekeepers, being creative, being reflective and more. So here's the show and if you like it, please let us know. I read all the comments and tweets. And use them to make better and better shows in the future. Thanks -James   I write about all my podcasts! What are strong narratives and what are weak narratives?  I sat down with comedian Brian Scott McFadden and we broke down the narratives of all of the presidential candidates to discover what we can learn from each of them and how we might form strong narratives for ourselves.   I also wrote an article about it: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/democratic-disaster-last-night-how-candidates-can-james-altucher/?trackingId=cOH9XPfBQVGug6qlU1GHTQ%3D%3D   I write about all my podcasts! Amy asked a big question. She said, "Ten years from now when I look back at this decade of my life, am I going to be impressed with how I spent it?" She asks a lot of big questions. Because she's a psychotherapist and the author of the international bestseller, "13 Things Mentally Strong People Don't Do." She's a regular on this show. Because we're friends. But also because I always learn from her. This time we talked about giving yourself permission to quit things that aren't right for you anymore, becoming mentally strong, learning how to use that muscle, and a lot of other things that promote healthy behavior and choosing yourself. I want to know what people think. And feel. I want to be able to read a room. And then use that to either make more money, create relationships, have more success, make business deals, etc. So I found Euny Hong and invited her on the podcast. She is the author of “The Power of Nunchi: The Korean Secret to Happiness and Success.” Euny told me Steve Jobs was a master at this. You'll hear how he did it. And how to get started yourself. I’ve been through almost every type of negotiation: salary negotiation, vacation time, buying businesses, selling businesses, getting equity, etc. The only negotiation I haven't tried personally is hostage negotiation. But I interviewed one from the CIA. And learned a lot to apply to other negotiations. So I decided to take all my best negotiation tips and put them into one podcast. Here’s me with Steve Cohen on the subject. I write about all my podcasts! Check out the full post and learn what I learned at jamesaltucher.com/podcast. Thanks so much for listening! I'm a guest on The Conscious Creators Show. And I'm airing it here. David Kwong is known for creating illusions. He’s a master. He’ll make you question your reality. I wanted to know his tricks. Because it's all developed from elements of persuasion. Who makes you think what? So many people come on my podcast and say, "Freewill is a myth." We've heard this from Yuval Harari who wrote "Sapiens." We heard it from Robert Greene, author of "The Laws of Human Nature." And now we're learning about it from a different perspective... Jonathan Kay wrote a book in 2011 called, "Among the Truthers: A Journey Through America's Growing Conspiracist Underground." He studied 9/11 conspiracy theorists, people who believe in UFOs, secret societies running the world and more. I wanted to know what makes someone cross the border from skeptical to radical. And he told me it has to do with a lot of elements... fear, control, desire to create hope and fight evil in the world. I was surprised to learn the psychology behind it. AND to learn how you can avoid the trap. I write about all my podcasts! Check out the full post and learn what I learned at jamesaltucher.com/podcast. Thanks so much for listening! I love games. I love chess. I love poker. I love anything that helps me be more strategic, prepared for negotiations. I like being able read people and build alliances. All of this comes from games. But I didn’t realize there are so many new games that also teach you about history, war, economics, statistics, the list goes on. I found out when I read Jonathan Kay’s new book “Your Move: What Board Games Teach Us About Life.” I write about all my podcasts! Someone sent me a video of a young 20-something-year-old getting tasered in the shower by a police officer. He was mentally ill.  I thought, “This needs to change.” And it is. Thanks to Chief Don Deluca, Scott Cohen and the whole team behind BolaWrap, a new technology that helps officers restrain people without using extreme force. Their story is proof that problems in society don’t have to stay problems forever. You can look at something difficult that hasn’t changed in 20 years and say, “I’m going to do something about this.” And that’s what this episode will walk you through. You'll learn how to go from problem to idea to action. So you can feel empowered to make the changes you want to see, too. I write about all my podcasts! Mike Rowe has been a TV personality for a long time. He’s best known as the host of “Dirty Jobs” where he shows the world what it’s like to do dangerous and disgusting jobs. Mike showed us that there’s dignity in work. Of all kinds. In this episode, I ask Mike what made him want to do that show. He told me, “Curiosity.” “It’s no less valid to wonder how a sewer works than how the Hubble works.” Mike shows that work is not about prestige. It’s about providing… something so many of us forget to recognize ourselves for. Even if we deserve to. I write about all my podcasts! I’m jealous of Jeannie Gaffigan’s brain tumor. Not the tumor itself. Or the feeding tube. Or side effects. But I’m jealous of the community that came to her side. I told her, "I’m afraid that if this ever happens to me, I won't have the love and support that you've built up over the years." She had a mega support system... neighbors and family who got her the best doctors, plus friends and colleagues who worked with her when she wrote and produced "The Jim Gaffigan Show." She laughed. Because it's the weirdest thing to be jealous of. But she understood. And told me not to worry. "I had no idea I had this [support system]. It took this. You have it. You just don't know. Like me. I didn't know it." She wrote all about this in her new book, "When Life Gives You Pears: The Healing Power of Family, Faith, and Funny People." Which you can also listen to on Audible. It'll make you laugh. And help you feel more connected. And more capable of handling life's hardest moments. Also if you want to know how to reshape your life, maybe start over, try a new career move, make a new income stream or whatever you need to feel refreshed, then I have a book for you. I dislike very much your way of marketing your "free" Book. If its free, Why should I enter My crédit card info? Also, stop wasting my time with 10 hour sales speech before I can download it. Extremely disrespectful. Maybe your product is even good but I'll never know it. *unsubscribed

A great way to get out of writer's block during Introductions is to title your opener as Part 2. And this tricks your brain.

The cigarette hack works. Ask any military person who served in Iraq and/or Afghanistan. The locals are smokers and are more willing to talk. Took me a while to quit smoking after I came back.
