On todays show:THINGS YOU SHOULD DO FIRST THING IN THE MORNING TO BE HAPPIER ALL DAY:❑ Pick a wellness habit, and link it to one of your morning rituals: It could be meditation, deep breathing, reading, or exercise. Perhaps add the deep-breathing thing to the time you spend making the bed after your shower. ❑ Get your phone out of your room: You’ve heard this before. No screen time in your room. If you reach for the phone or other device first thing, you’re letting the outside world dictate your mood for the day.❑ Talk to yourself: Self-talk can be very conducive to helping you overcome whatever obstacles you face in the coming day. It’s even better if you use your own name out loud. ❑ Talk to someone else: Make a social contact with somebody you like. This could be a spouse or child, a friend, an extended family member, almost anyone. A call or a text will work, but meeting for coffee will give you a big boost to start your day. ❑ Incorporate gratitude: People who journal about the things they’re thankful for have been shown to score much higher happiness scores those who kept track of things that irritate them. OLD CUSTOMS THAT ARE HARD TO IMAGINE TODAY:☞ A kid in a car without a child seat: It wasn’t that long ago that this was legal. In France, for instance, child seats have only been mandatory since 1992. For Canada and the US, it was the 1980s.☞ Checking your cash before going out: Before bank cards, you wouldn’t dream of leaving home without cash. Credit cards didn’t become popular until the 1970s. In the 1980s, ATMs popped up everywhere.☞ Buying a newspaper every morning: In movies, we often see the commuter faithfully picking up the morning paper on the way to the office. Of course, the internet changed that.☞ Throwing away plastic bottles: Recycling hasn’t always existed as we know it today. While plastic bottles are everywhere, we’re increasingly aware of the need to recycle them.☞ Having a tooth pulled by your barber: That’s precisely who pulled out damaged teeth after dental care instruments were invented in the 16th century.☞ Watching movies at specific times: Remember waiting for the exact time a movie would be shown on TV? And tough luck if you missed it! Thanks to streaming, the way we watch shows and movies has been transformed.☞ Corporal punishment at school: Not only do laws now prohibit it, society sees it as barbaric. Current teaching methods favor non-violent means of discipline.☞Smoking in restaurants: You knew this was coming. Smoking sections first appeared in in the 1990s (US). Eventually, smoking was banned in all public places, including restaurants.GERMINATING GERMS:While it’s true that these days, it’s hard to go anywhere without seeing hand sanitizer stations available, there are other, far more sinister sources of germs than doorknobs and handrails. In fact, scientists are warning of 7 common spots where bacteria are thriving. In fact, these areas, places you might never suspect are hotbeds for microbial life, are all germier than the average toilet seat, according to science…1. Smartphones: When did you properly clean yours last? They are likely a key source of bacteria entering the body.2. Kitchen sponges: One study even found that the average kitchen sponge carries more bacterial species than a lab Petri dish.3. Water bottles:  Reused water bottles can contain mold and bacteria, especially if they aren’t washed thoroughly.4. Fountain soda water: The water lines from these things are usually teeming with bacteria, researchers say. That includes salmonella and E. coli.5. Handbags: Consider all the bacteria-laden items that get stored inside the bags, none of which are routinely cleaned.6. Self-checkout screens: They are touched by so many dirty fingers,...

THE WAY YOU MAKE ME FEEL:Japanese researchers decided to investigate the ways in which musical notes can elicit specific bodily sensations and emotions. They asked 527 volunteers to map where they “felt” music while listening to 8 tunes. Participants were also asked about how the music made them feel emotionally. Here’s what the researchers found:• Songs that were more surprising were felt in the heart, while predictable music was felt in the stomach.• Sensations in the heart were strongly linked to musical appreciation and feelings of pleasure, which led to a decline in feelings of awkwardness and anxiety.• Sensations in the stomach – brought on by predictable chord progressions – brought on feelings of calm, satisfaction and nostalgia.Fun Facts ✓ Half of all bank robberies in the U.S. are done on a Friday.✓ Red-haired men are most likely to go bald.➠ The Masters Golf Tournament Just wrapped up. Did you know:  Tiger Woods has won 5 green jackets.  (Okay, TWO green jackets. Thanks, divorce…)➠ Funeral arrangements are being made for OJ Simpson, who died last week at 76. (They were thinking of having Al Cowlings drive the hearse…but he drives too slow!)➠ In an interview, Leonardo DiCaprio said he thinks of himself as an underdog. (Then he signed another $30 million movie contract, fell ass-backwards into a pile of supermodels, and flew away in his private jet…)➠ Fact of the Day: Roughly 6 billion people on Earth own a phone, but only 4.5 billion have access to a working toilet. (“By working toilet”, I think they mean a NOKIA!)➠ A study shows social media is responsible for making people ruder. (…or at least that’s what I read on Facebook this morning while tailgating some obnoxious a-hole who tried to cut me off!)COFFEE QUESTIONS:According to a survey of 2,000 coffee drinkers in the US…⇒ Those who prefer cold brew and iced coffees are more likely to prefer sunny weather and binge-watch science-fiction shows.⇒ Cold coffee lovers are also more likely to be introverted and travel more than those who prefer hot coffee. And are more likely to enjoy the music of artists like Megan Thee Stallion.⇒ Hot coffee drinkers, then, are more likely to be extroverts. They are also more likely to prefer overcast weather, enjoy comedy shows, and to listen to artists like Taylor Swift.⇒ Hot coffee drinkers are also more likely to be a baby boomer. In fact, 94% of people over the age of 56 prefer a hot mug of joe.⇒ 42% of have tried to recreate their specialty coffee order at home.⇒ Coffee drinkers would rather give up social media (22%), television (18%), alcohol (16%), and video games (4%) than coffee.⇒ Whether it’s oat milk, almond milk, soy milk, hemp milk, or regular dairy, 1 in 4 coffee drinkers would rather go without their cup of joe altogether if their preferred whitener isn’t available. That’s it for todays show! The Latest is Up!!!!YOUNG AND ZESTLESS:Helicopter parenting may have reached a new level, if the results of a new poll of hiring managers is an indication. It found that 39% of employers actually try to avoid hiring recent college graduates for roles they’re qualified for. Why? Here’s one reason: A startling one in 5 (19%) hiring managers said a recent college graduate brought a parent with them to their job interview! And that’s not the only thing stopping employers from hiring Gen Z applicants:• One in 5 said that recent college graduates are “unprepared” for interviews — and are often unprofessional.• 53% said that recent college graduates struggle with eye contact.• 50% said they ask for unreasonable compensation.• 47% said they don’t dress appropriately for interviews.• and 21% said they refuse to turn their cameras on for virtual interviews. On the other hand, Diane M. Gayeski, a professor of strategic communications at Ithaca College, feels these behaviors aren’t entirely their fault, pointing out that due to the pandemic, “young people graduating from college had more than 2 years of disruption in their education as well as their social and professional development.”Fun Facts ✓ Your brain literally heats up when you’re stressed. Smiling can cool it down.✓ Blushing is caused by a rush of adrenaline. It’s also genetic, so if you’re prone to it, it’s likely one of your parents is, too.➠ A Dunkin’ Donuts customer filed a $100,000 lawsuit, claiming a toilet explosion caused severe injuries and he was covered in feces, urine and debris. (It could have been worse. He could have been hosting the Golden Globes!)➠ A survey found that 25% of women would give up sex for an iPad. (Part of me is like, “Who’d EVER give up sex for a computer device?” And the other half is like . . . “The new one with 5G?”)➠ A report says the number of Americans with blue eyes has declined over 30% in the past few decades. (If you ask me, it’s because God ran out, after making Anderson Cooper’s!)➠ A study shows that people are more likely to lie and cheat in the afternoon. (Which explains Congress’ new motto: “It’s two o’clock somewhere.”)➠ A historian thinks he has pinpointed the first-known use of the f-word. (It was Noah – when he realized he forgot the unicorns!)For the 7th year in a row, the Mediterranean diet — a way of eating focused on whole grains, fruits, vegetables, lean protein and healthy fat — is the best overall diet, according to US News & World Report’s annual ranking. The Mediterranean diet also ranked first in the categories of easiest diet to follow, best family-friendly diet, best diet for healthy eating and best diet for diabetes, bone and joint and heart-healthy eating. The DASH diet, which aims to lower blood pressure, came second, and the MIND diet (Mediterranean-DASH intervention for neurodegenerative delay) came third. The Raw Food Diet, Herbalife Nutrition and Dukan were selected the 3 WORST diets of the year due to their restrictive nature or reliance on processed shakes and bars, which, in addition to being expensive, are not conducive to sustainable healthy eating habits. And because I know you’re wondering, Keto was named Best Fast Weight-Loss Diet.
