Description

The Jewish Song Show is an immersive audio documentary series about the stories behind the Jewish songs we think we know.

Hosted by vocalist, educator, and storyteller Steve Singer, each episode takes one song—from Yiddish theatre hits to Israeli anthems to camp favorites—and follows its journey across time, place, and culture. Along the way we meet the composers, communities, and historical moments that shaped the music, and ask a bigger question: what makes a song “Jewish” in the first place?

With rich sound design, archival tape, expert voices, and a healthy dose of curiosity, The Jewish Song Show is here to build joyful, thoughtful Jewish connection through music—especially for listeners who love Jewish culture but never got the “inside story” growing up.

The Jewish Song Show is produced by The Jewish Song Project, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to strengthening Jewish literacy and pride through song.

A little boy in the Pale of Settlement thinks his name is lemeshke—“good-for-nothing”—until a song at the Shabbos table proves otherwise. From there, his voice will carry him through pogroms, across an ocean, and onto the stages and synagogues of New York, on the way to becoming composer Sholom Secunda. In this debut episode, we meet Secunda long before fame and “Bei Mir Bist Du Sheyn.” Guided by a wry, ghostly Sholom himself, we follow his journey from Nicholayev cheder to child cantor...
