Description

Joe Marler used to hate people, but then he met Tom Fordyce, and a load of ordinary people doing extraordinary things, and a podcast was born that changed his mind forever. It might just change your life too.

Because everyone is interesting if you ask the right questions. And this is a show about all the weird and wonderful things people do.

Together, Joe and Tom meet astronauts, teachers, marine biologists, cheesemakers, prison guards and everyone in between. Along the way, they’ve learned things that have blown their minds, heard stories that have made them laugh until it hurts, and – well, felt a whole lot better about the world around them and the people that fill it.

This episode will make you fall in love with libraries, that's a fact. Our guest is Lara, who is not your stereotypical librarian, in the sense that she doesn't spend her days telling people to 'ssshhhhh' or chasing people for fines. In this episode we discuss how libraries have changed the world, what the best excuses people have given for not returning a book, and 'that' aisle that is in every library where people get up to no good. Joe also shares his knowledge on books, which is basically The Hungry Caterpillar and a made up one from 'The Mummy'. He tells Joe and Tom all about how the trading floor works, and if it is actually anything like The Wolf of Wall Street. It's a massive one this week, because our guest is Sam, a former producer of Newsnight who had a key role in orchestrating the most infamous TV interview of the century. She gives us her account of how that interview at Buckingham Palace unfolded, from getting access to Prince Andrew in the first place, to the aftermath of what proved to be an absolute disaster for the royals. Plus, she tells us about the Netflix film coming out which is based on her story, where she gets played by Billie Piper! We think you'll enjoy this one... Joe is back from the Six Nations! The chairman is joined by co-host Tom and producer Ryan to discuss how to make this shambles of a podcast a worldwide success. They talk about the idea of Joe being the celebrant for a listeners wedding, some x rated merch suggestions and the prospect of getting Daisy's mum on the show at last. How do you remember every street in London off by heart? With great difficulty, according to Lee, who is a third generation black cab driver. Lee tells us everything we've ever wanted to know about taxi driving, including learning 'the knowledge', dealing with drunk passengers, and why Uber are the worst. Think modern day Dick Van Dyke, but way better. He tells us all about being a modern chimney sweep, including finding skeletons in the houses of parliament, being invited to random weddings because chimney sweeps are good luck, and a phenomenal story about the time he found some 'romantic' letters up a chimney, from a wife who was having an affair. Before her time as a comedian and award-winning writer, Fern Brady did a lot of weird jobs. She made flower potions at a psychic fair, worked in a sex shop that sold hilariously titled pornos, had a Saturday shift at a bookies full of crying men and... well, Boots. We're live, back at The Clapham Grand to delve into all of that, as well partake in some lengthy discussions about magic mushrooms and 'poophoria'. Strap in... This week, our guest is Ruth, a professional decorator who rocks a pair of pink overalls and loves inspecting the paintwork in nightclub toilets! In this episode, we discover why there is more to the job than 'slapping a bit of paint on the walls' (Joe's words), why there are so many different shades of white, and how to actually wallpaper a wall. There is also a lot of talk about elephant breath, among other weirdly named colours. Our guest today is Ross, who is a Warden at The Tower of London. This episode is nothing short of a fascinating (and absolutely bonkers) history lesson that involves elephants drinking wine, Anne Boleyn's ghost, William the Bastard aka Conqueror, and a bloke called Colonel Blood who tried to steal the Crown Jewels and ended up being the King's best mate. Who would you call if your family member was being held hostage, and their kidnappers were demanding 50 million pounds in exchange for their safe return?
