On this killer episode of Talking Guitars on Johnny Beane TV, we kick things off with a cool story straight from Guitar World—then it’s full speed to the workbench 🔥 Few guitarists changed the landscape like Eddie Van Halen, and Steve Stevens has said witnessing his virtuosity firsthand hit so hard it pushed him away from rock guitar entirely. After opening for Van Halen for six weeks, Stevens felt burned out by rock excess and began questioning why he even played guitar. Rather than compete with EVH, he pivoted. He stopped playing electric guitar for a year, traveled the world with only a nylon-string, and reconnected with his love of flamenco after seeing Paco de Lucía. That journey led to his most experimental album, Flamenco A Go-Go (1999). Stevens embraced the creative reset, blending flamenco with influences from ’70s keyboards and synthesizers—drawing inspiration from players like Keith Emerson and Rick Wakeman—proving that stepping away from the electric guitar ultimately expanded his musical voice. I crack open a mystery surprise box from Ron, packed with wild 3D-printed guitar parts, including Telecaster pickguards routed for humbuckers. On this episode of Talking Guitars on JohnnyBeaneTV, we opened with a heartfelt tribute to the legendary Steve Cropper, whose family announced his passing today. I share the story of meeting him nearly 30 years ago at the guitar shop I worked at—an unforgettable moment with a true icon. Legendary guitarist Steve Cropper — the soulful force behind Booker T. & the MG’s, Otis Redding, and the Blues Brothers — has passed away at the age of 84. His son Cameron confirmed the news to Variety on Wednesday. Cropper’s influence on Memphis soul is immeasurable. As a guitarist, producer, songwriter, and engineer at Stax Records, he shaped the sound of an era. His tight, tasteful, unmistakable guitar work powered Booker T. & the MG’s, while also elevating recordings by Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Sam & Dave, Rufus and Carla Thomas, Eddie Floyd, and more. In 1996, Mojo magazine ranked him the second-greatest guitarist of all time, just behind Jimi Hendrix, praising his metronomic timing, razor-sharp riffs, and perfectly placed licks — always serving the song, never overstaying their welcome. As a songwriter, Cropper co-wrote classics like “Green Onions,” “Time Is Tight,” and “Soul-Limbo,” along with timeless R&B hits including Otis Redding’s “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay”, Wilson Pickett’s “In the Midnight Hour” and “634-5789,” and Eddie Floyd’s “Knock On Wood.” After leaving Stax in 1970, he continued making history. Booker T. & the MG’s reunited into the ’90s, backing icons like Bob Dylan, John Fogerty, Neil Young, and Levon Helm. Cropper also became widely known to new generations as the guitarist for The Blues Brothers, appearing on their platinum records and in both films. In 1992, Steve Cropper was rightfully inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Booker T. & the MG’s. Then it’s off to the workbench! I swap out the strap pins on my TEASE Telecaster, tighten up some screws on a Squier Tele, and Ron jumps in to show off some killer 3D-printed guitar goodies he’s been crafting. And somehow… we wrap the night talking about MASSIVE burgers—PermanI Brothers, local burger joints, and the monster creations Ron hunts down. Guess we were starving! On this episode of Straturday Night Live, we’re kicking things off with a brand new intro — and this one’s been four years in the making! 🚁✨ It actually shows the route I take to get to the studio every day… inspired by Grand Theft Auto V. Yes, I finally made the GTA-style DeLorean (the Deluxo!) intro I’ve always wanted. Let me know what you think in the comments! After that, we head straight to the workbenches. Ron dives into a Jackson Warrior project, and I jump between a couple builds of my own. My Strat now has a Seymour Duncan Screamin’ Demon in the bridge, but the nut slots dropped and the action got way too low — so I hit it with the classic superglue + baking soda fix. We’ll revisit this repair next week. We kicked things off by showing our freshly repainted Samick Avion / Greg Bennett mini guitar — HUGE shout-out to Ron! This little beast started life as a black eBay car guitar, but now it’s a champagne flip-flop copper ripper loaded with an Epiphone humbucker, Pure Tone jack, and Grover tuners. We played it, loved it, ROCKED it. 🤘 Then it was music news time — including the wild story Micky Dolenz calls “the worst tour matchup in rock history”: 🎤 The time Jimi Hendrix opened for The Monkees. Dolenz had seen Hendrix back when he was Jimmy James & the Blue Flames — “the guy who plays guitar with his teeth.” After Hendrix destroyed Monterey Pop in ’67, Dolenz wanted him on The Monkees’ first big U.S. tour. Great idea… in theory. Hendrix’s manager hated it. Dick Clark said anyone could see it wouldn’t work. But it happened anyway. When the tour launched in July ’67, Hendrix shredded while crowds screamed “We want the Monkees!” After eight shows, he was pulled — blamed on fake “complaints” that the act was “too erotic.” Hendrix joked, “I think they’re replacing me with Mickey Mouse.” Still, Dolenz says they remained friends, and he still tells the story at his solo shows. After that, it was Workbench Time! 🛠️ We grabbed the Fender 75th Anniversary Strat, swapped a broken string, dialed in tones through the Line 6 Pod Go, and jammed live. Purpose: The theory is used to poke fun at new players posting videos online, implying they are unaware of their own lack of skill. Community Response: Many have criticized the theory as mean-spirited, especially toward young or inexperienced players. Critics encourage more positive, supportive interactions within the online guitar community, emphasizing that everyone starts somewhere.
