The Lake is pleased to present Works for Radio, where five artists and artist groups have created five new sound works for the radio.
This year's edition of Work for Radio revolves around the theme "Untranslatable": A translation is the rendering of a text from one language to another, or a change in substance, form, or medium. In the process, something new emerges, and something else disappears. When an image is described, it becomes words; when words are spoken into a microphone, they become electricity; when electricity is sent through a speaker, it becomes sound. Translation is transformation—a shift in material, context, or form. Despite the intention to stay as close to the original as possible, we always end up somewhere else.
Works for Radio 2024 is supported by Koda's Cultural Funds.
A 5G operetta translating text to music and music to vocals through generative AI. A server situation where the borders between the intimate sphere of kinship and cyber surveillance collide. A work lacking the element of dance that instead choreographs the life of the mind through audible algorithms. In collaboration with ChatGPT, DeepAI and Audimee. Master by: 2Lanes
The piece was commissioned by The Lake Radio as part of our Works for Radio 2024 with support from Koda's Cultural Funds and was selected by an international jury consisting of representatives from Seydisfjordur Community Radio (IS) and Retreat Radio (SE).
Scottish composer and conductor James MacMillan intertwines the political and the spiritual in his work. He draws on Catholic and Scottish musical traditions, while addressing liberation theology. His composition ‘Tuireadh’ (Lament) is dedicated to the 167 victims of the 1988 Piper Alpha disaster. Piper Alpha was an oil platform that exploded and collapsed under the effect of sustained gas jet fires in 1988. Mcmillan's lament for the dead premiered on June 25, 1991, at St Magnus Cathedral, Kirkwall, Scotland. Nazanin Noori and Andrea Belfi have reworked ‘Tuireadh’, incorporating drums, rhythmic percussion and modular electronics, as a tribute to the cries of mourners of human cost.

Soy Milk is a canon presented in Norwegian, Swedish, English, German, and Danish. It explores misunderstandings and jokes, translations and neighborly relations – and how one can find a sense of home through conversations with loved ones. Five different translations of the same text are interwoven into a shifting arrangement, where some sentences stand alone while others overlap and mirror each other in kaleidoscopic soundscapes. The piece is based on a 2020 performance work of the same title, with the script published that year as an artist book by Forlaget Aleatorik.

Norwegian: Minni Mertens
Swedish: Axel Burendahl

Researching the evolution of listening, language and spine, I noticed the German word 'Haltung' can not be translated easily into English. you need at least 3 words: posture, stance, integrity and perhaps perseverance is in it too. Durchhalten. Hang in there.
The composition is a reflection on how we can weave communities under collective dissonance on a planet under attack and exploitation.
Can Frequencies reach spaces that are uncontrollable and differently organised to give humans strength, stable spines and perseverance to learn to live in coexistence with all other life forms that are part of us and nourish us.

Life music is a letter exchange between three friends in sound form. Through the summer of 2024 we have sent each other sound postcards, from Japan to Denmark to the UK - small sound photographies from our summer travels. The starting point of our piece is the music in life - the music that surrounds us and occurs simply through being part of a society. A train ride, a cricket match, a walk in a Japanese arcade, a creaky door and a spontaneous outburst of samba become an eclectic collage of short sound pieces, with ilinx’ three-part vocals added.

This show journeys into the theme of ‘doikayt’, the yiddish word for hereness: what
does it mean to be here for ourselves, with each other, and in solidarity with
everything around us when the systems of oppression seek to divide us? Under the
guiding flow of spoken meditation, spell, and incantation, Dali Muru’s show dreamily
meanders between newly composed soundscapes, field recordings, samples from
archival chassidic melodies, folk songs, to stories of mystical encounters in Islamic
Spain, weaving a thread of overlooked forces, resonances, and spiritual intersections
across time and space.
Dali Muru & The Polyphonic Swarm (poet, filmmaker, vocalist-Dalia Neis, producer- Enir Da, & multi-instrumentalist-Charles Lmx) fuse troubadour poetics, film soundtracks and primordial electronics.

The dice were thrown and I'm offering you to get away for an hour. Jump in this topdown until Sunday morning. I picked some minimal, some vintage, some floating synths and even a sound letter. We visit Burma and listen to the detuned pipe-sound of scales that we don't use in Western music. This episode is soft for your nervous system and exiting for the brain. It's always a balance. We enter big rooms and leave our worries at the door. Pick up the rhythm of freedom and rise up like a phoenix. Welcome to the pod.

“I am informally referring to this mixtape as Colla Voce, or 'with the voice' in Italian. This is a nod to the instruction often seen in European classical vocal music, where an instrumentalist is instructed to simply follow the voice. It is also a nod to my most recent album, COLLA VOCE, which has a track that can be heard on this mixtape (OXYGEN). To narrow my admiration for this instrument down to an hour is an insurmountable task, but nonetheless, here are some of my favorite pieces of music using the voice in one way or another. All of these artists are active, and I encourage you to explore their powerful bodies of work.”
Nick Dunston is an acoustic and electroacoustic composer, improviser, and multi-instrumentalist. Called an “indispensable player on the New York avant-garde” (New York Times), his performances have spanned a variety of venues and festivals across North America and Europe. His work explores notions of ancestral memory, materiality, embodiment, decolonization, and Afro-surrealism.
Nick Dunston is an artist of the SHAPE+ platform for innovative music and interdisciplinary art, co-funded by the European Union and Pro Helvetia.

Hvad er musikkens biologiske funktion? Hvorfor er vi som mennesker i stand til at forstå og endda skabe musik sammen? Er musik noget, der adskiller os fra dyrene, eller er det noget, vi har til fælles?

Next up in the Shape+ series is Dania.
“This mix is a collection of organic sounds, guitar, violin, cello and especially voice. I’ve included a few demos I’ve been working on with just guitar and voice with my friend Ilyas Ahmed which will be released on Geographic North in October. Here you will also hear some music from Ulla and Perila who just released an album on my label Paralaxe Editions. They used the floor as a studio to create some beautiful ambient jazz. Also, some forthcoming by composer Flora Yin Wong which will come out next year. All in all, some gentle but visceral sounds. Some other reverby bells, and music for tranquil times.”
An architect of textured, neo-ambient soundscapes, Dania explores both sound and identity, focusing specifically on how the latter has fractured in a post-colonial world. Born in Baghdad, raised in Tasmania and now based in Barcelona, she moves between cultures and continents, her amorphous creative vision directly tied to her transient existence.
The founder of experimental platform Paralaxe Editions, Dania divides her time between Spain and the remote corners of Australia, where she works as an emergency doctor.
Dania is an artist of the SHAPE+ platform for innovative music and interdisciplinary art, co-funded by the European Union and Pro Helvetia.
