The Life of Jesus: Series 5 - Jesus’ second tour of Galilee - with his disciples

After delivering the Sermon on the Mount Jesus embarks on another tour of Galilee. He returns to places he has been before as well as going to new places. This time the key factor is that he is accompanied by his twelve key disciples (the apostles). This is a vital time of training of them as they watch Jesus teach, perform miracles and deal with the needs and demands of the crowds. Jesus also starts to teach in parables. Significant opposition from the religious authorities based in Jerusalem appears at this time.

17. Jesus – a prophet without honour in his home town

Two blind men call Jesus 'Son of David' - a messianic title. They are healed but the Pharisees say it is through demonic power. Jesus returns to Nazareth but is not accepted there.

Jairus and a woman are from different social standings but both need Jesus and overcome fear, emotion and cynicism. They show faith and humility and are rewarded by healings.

15. Healing of two spiritually oppressed men

This is one example of Jesus' ministry to cast out demons. It happens in Gentile territory and the demons are seen to leave the men and enter the pigs. Jesus has the authority and power over forces of evil.

14. Jesus calms a storm

On the journey between two difficult events for Jesus a storm arises and the disciples show fear. Jesus challenges them to show faith - before he's calmed the storm. The challenge still stands today.

13. Faith, family & following Jesus

Jesus challenges those following him about the need to make a response to his message. That will depend on how people listen. Christians have two families which can bring conflict, as it did for Jesus.

12. The Parable of the Fishing Net

Jesus uses a common experience of his listeners, to warn that within the community of believers there will always be those who will be judged at the Second Coming of Jesus. Teachers of both the Old Testament and New Testament have a great treasure.

Jesus uses things highly valued and understood by the Jewish listeners to explain that the Kingdom of God is worth paying a high price for.

Jesus is predicting that the Gospel message of the Kingdom has an innate power that will cause it to grow even in hostile circumstances and what appears to be very small will end up having huge influence.

9. The Parable of the Weeds

Jesus uses another agricultural parable to teach that at the same time as the Kingdom of God is growing, so too the power of evil. Ultimately, the victory will come at the Second Coming.

Female disciples of Jesus are introduced. Parables are explained as revealing truth to those seeking and hiding the truth from those who are opposed.

7. The sign of Jonah

Jesus continues to warn the nation of Israel and particularly the leaders that to ignore the signs of the presence of the Messiah is dangerous. Old Testament examples are used to reinforce the message.

6. Jesus rejected by the religious leaders

The crowd hails Jesus as the Son of David - a messianic title but despite having seen all the miracles, the Pharisees deny his messiahship, attributing his power to Satan and not the Holy Spirit.

5. Jesus anointed by a sinful woman

Whilst dining with a Pharisee, Jesus is anointed by a prostitute. Jesus contrasts the two reactions to him and his message. By faith, the woman's sins are forgiven. She repents and finds grace.

Different responses to the Good News of Jesus are considered. To see God working and not respond fully is dangerous ultimately, but to commit to following gives life and peace.

John's disciples are sent to question Jesus. He answers and highlights the importance of John's role as a prophet.

2. The raising of the widow’s son

Jesus performs a resurrection miracle in Nain. This recalls the resurrections performed by Elijah and Elisha and with others, prefigures the resurrection of Jesus and the final resurrection of all people. Jesus shows compassion.

A Gentile centurion asks Jesus to heal his servant by sending two delegations. He is recommended for his great faith. He shows vulnerability and persistence.
