As I journey through life, I imagine creating mixes as a backdrop for an array of environments and moments. Everything from dreaming at home in morning solitude to an afternoon workout. From a relaxed and intimate moment with a friend over tea to hosting a larger group for dinner. From groovin' at a cocktail lounge to the dance floor at the night club. From the journey back home to the bedroom. A soundtrack for life. This year in particular, I really enjoyed creating more chillout and lounge mixes. The Love & The Music continues to breathe new life and learn more about itself. For those of you who have been following this podcast for many years, and who are likely a little more accustomed to the funky house mixes, your patience has paid off. On the eve of a departure for some extended travel and adventure, we give you a pumpin' 2-hour follow-up to the 2010 original (which is by far the most downloaded episode of this podcast to date). I hope this will quench your thirst; it will be the last mix I post for some time now. Remember, this is not a mix of classic disco songs. Rather, these tracks are the seeds of the disco tree that have sprouted new life. They are the children and grandchildren of disco. Indeed they have a style and spirit all their own, yet their roots in disco are undeniable (to me at least). Disco is not dead, it continues to live through yet another generation of artists. In metaphorical fashion, I dedicate this mix to each of my 4 grandparents. "I know how much that means to me" Special thanks again to Aslisu who was the artist behind the original cover photo. It was just so perfect I had to use it again for Volume II. I had the privilege of being asked to play at a Calgary wedding during cocktail hour this summer. This was great timing since I was just putting the final touches on a lounge mix I had been planning for several years. This was just the inspiration I needed to complete the mix and play live. The set was visioned as this subtle, uplifting background which kept the focus of the cocktail hour on guests connecting with each other. The music would not overpower the lively conversations happening in the room. There would be a vast array of instruments. An undercurrent of grooves would warm up the hips for the dance floor later on. Lyrics would be subtle; although they might captivate a select few. This mix is dedicated to the inspirational couple of the evening, Bik and Alisha. And to all friends and lovers connecting across the world amidst the ambient beat of sexy lounge music. As the leaves on the trees begin to change colours and the temperatures start to cool down over night here in Canada, we are reminded of the constant changing of the seasons and how this reflects our inner world. As the autumn season approaches slowly in Canada, we are encouraged to slow down and reflect. This mix is a musical backdrop created for relaxing and connecting with a friend or two. A follow-up mix from 2009's original Tea House Sessions. 'Dedicated to all the herbs and mushrooms that fill our tea cups with their medicine and wisdom. Chillstep

Chillstep

During this last year I have been called to create mixes that explore my edges; mixes that span many different genres. This mix really pushes on my edge for "darker" electronic music. I fell in love with Chillstep when I was first introduced to the sound; a perfect blend of beautiful vocals and deep, deep bass. With Chillstep, there also seems to have this subtle spirituality flowing throughout it as well. After all, it is the home to Alan Watts. This mix is dedicated to our friend Belle who brought Chillstep to us at a very important time. Music is a healer. "Spirituality is not the path of milk & honey; it's about going into the darkness to get to the light." - B. G. Rickhi Following what seems to be a trend in Chillstep album covers, I decided to use digital artwork. A huge thank you to Leroy Van Vliet for the beautiful cover, which I find to be so symbolic of the mix. More of Leroy's work can be found at http://leroyart.com/ or https://catbib.deviantart.com/ Special thanks to all artists featured below. Yoga Flow

Yoga Flow

2017-07-0301:26:46

With you is a 90min continuous yoga flow mix. The mix was imagined to work well for a 50, 60, 75 and 90 minute class. The mix begins and ends slow, with some heat in the middle. Long loops and enchanting grooves lay a subtle ambience for an inspired practice where the practitioner is encouraged to journey inward. Traditional yogic sounds are blended with a new age style of electronic music. Cycling from light and dark sounds, a spiritual path is reflected. My own spiritual journey has drawn me to blend First Nations teachings with Yoga; and so you will find that influence splashed in there as well. It is my hope that it will be a helpful backdrop to a meaningful experience on the mat for you or your students. This mix is dedicated to my wife Kimberly who first introduced me to yoga back in 2010, and to all the teachers that have helped me deepen my practice along the way. There are too many teachers to name individually - you know who you are. I've collected most of these songs from classes that were taught by all of you :) Namaste. Odyssey

Most of these mixes stir in the imagination for years before their songs bond together to form something complete. But this set of tunes seemed to coalesce out from nowhere, seemingly from the ether itself in a strangely quick and unexpected way. Music that lays a gentle and inspiring background for any journey. Maybe a physical experience of endurance or strength. Or maybe a nonphysical exploration of your inner landscape, riding on the back of your turtle totem into the far edges of the sea and your imagination. In a subtle way there was a teaching that came with this mix; to remember how important integration and reflection is with every journey. If we continue to forget to make time and space to integrate, then integration becomes the great odyssey. Inspirational cover art of the Harvest Moon by Patrick Latter. Ocean Blues

Over the years I've had this subtle feeling that these mixes make themselves. The more I can step out of the way and let the mix reveal itself, the more unexpected it becomes. Slowly, it becomes in focus. This mix in particular tested my patience more than any other. Certain songs make up the seeds of the mix, and they provide the foundation from which other songs coalesce. Some of the seeds for this mix have been waiting patiently for nearly 15 years. As I listen I feel mixed emotions: deep, dark and changing like the ocean. Some have been buried and long forgotten, they begin to rise slowly to the surface as I focus my awareness into them. There is this quality of roughness around the edges, like waves crashing into rocky shores. I ask for forgiveness. "Colours come and colours go, summer sun and winter snow" Special thanks to Lukas Sowada for the inspired cover photography. I found this shot in particular really captured the feeling of the mix. From A Solid To A Liquid

From A Solid To A Liquid

Winter is represented by the medicine wheel direction of North and the colour white. In Ayurveda, winter is represented by the Kapha dosha. More than anytime during the year, winter calls us to slow down, rest and dream. This mix was designed to help bring your awareness inward; from your ordinary state of being to the non-ordinary, from consensual reality to non-consensual, from time to nature's pulse, from movement to stillness, from a solid to a liquid. This mix can be a helpful backdrop for meditation, art, restorative or yin yoga, massage tables, float tanks and especially afternoon dreaming. In 2014, I attended my first yoga nidra workshop. During this class with well over 50 people, I drifted into sleep. I awoke right at the end of class feeling rested and relaxed, but also quite surprised that I actually feel asleep. I later found out through further practice that this is quite normal. The class taught by Giselle Mari was titled From a Solid to a Liquid. My experience during this class planted the inspirational seed for this mix, which has been growing from that day. This is a mix that was co-created with my sister Andrea for a women's bootcamp class in Calgary. Lots of high-energy tunes here to get you through an hour-long workout; complete with some slower tracks at the end for some stretching and integration. An eclectic mix with something for everyone: funk, hip-hop, swing and pop. All served up with a side of (DJ)Rabbyt stew. Love can be love. TRACKLIST: 01 Major Lazor - Leen On (feat MO & DJ Snake) 02 Jamie Berry - Peeping tom (feat Rosie Harte) 03 The Knocks - Classic (feat Power) 04 DMX - When I'm Nothing (feat Stephanie Mills) 05 Daryl Hall & John Oates - Can't Go For That (Stickybuds Remix) 06 Stevie Wonder - Superstition (Funkanomics Remix) 07 Funk Hunters - Soul Man 08 The Weekend - Can't Feel My Face (Fear of Dawn Remix) 09 Tove Lo - Talking Body (Panic City Dirty Remix) 10 La Roux - Bulletproof (Manhattan Clique Remix) 11 Beyonce - Green Light (Freemasons Remix) 12 Jose & Rose - Chicago Renegades 13 AronChupa - I'm an Albatraoz (Extended Workout Mix) 14 Ricky Luchini - Little Bird (feat Moony) (Disko Kriminals Pop Mix) 15 Lights - Toes 16 Bob Marley - I Wanna Love You (Stereo Express feat Sakso) 17 Justin Timberlake - Until The End of Time Special thanks to Colin Baillargeon for the cover art design!
As the leaves start to fall off the trees and that distinctive chill in the crisp autumn air returns, I am called to slow down and turn inwards. Autumn is represented by the medicine wheel direction of West and the colour blue (or sometimes black). In Ayurveda, autumn is represented by the Vatta (wind) dosha. May this melodic and emotive mix help to relax and create space for introspection. The title comes to me from what I could remember from a recent dream… [I remember being asked 2 questions. I cannot remember the 1st for the life of me. The 2nd involved making a connection between a canoe and a cave. I began my story explaining how reality was a sort of illusion and how physical journeys were actually more about the inner journey - what goes on inside someone. Henceforth, it matters not whether you are travelling in a canoe or sitting in a cave. A cave is a type of canoe. The journey is inside regardless.] "Remember, you only need to move a 1/4 inch in the direction of your dreams to start feeling better" - Don Ollsin Intro | Excerpt(s) from Calum MacDiarmid's "Worship" (inspired by Derry MacDiarmid's "Century of Insight") 01 | One Mile North - In 1983 He Loved to Fly 02 | Japanese Wallpaper - Breathe In (feat. I love to feel full circles….. when what I thought was maybe lost returns again stronger with the uncanny sense of how it felt at the very beginning. The Love & The Music was born on the beaches of Australia. During my honeymoon in July I visited the Hawaiian island of Maui and felt the return of the inspiration of the beach (the cover photo and the ocean waves heard throughout the mix were recorded off the western shores of Maui). During this special time in my life I was filled with an incredible amount of creative energy, which has finally manifested in this sun-soaked tropical house mix. Thank you to everyone who supported Kimberly and I in our journey together, may you feel my love for you in this album. To everyone else, may these sounds lighten and uplift your mind, body and spirit... wherever you are. One love. Mixed tapes had always been a creative outlet for myself growing up. Turntables were the ultimate tool to seamlessly flow from one song to another, helping to create artwork where the songs produced by other artists became my paint. Learning to play live sets for dancing-starved crowds proved to be another beast all-together. It took months of practice at Russian house parties to feel comfortable playing live. Of course, I had lots of help along the way from experienced mixers - most notably South Africa's Nicholas Clarence and Russia's Andrey Len. Last summer I met Adrien Dhanraj, a local DJ & promoter who gave me the opportunity to play in some of Calgary's clubs when I was ready. As luck would have it, Adrien was also the organizer of Calgary's annual Dirty Tones DJ Competition. I decided to enter this year back in March and was ecstatic to find out that I had managed to get a slot! Three rounds later, I had made it through to the finals. With each round, I became more and more humbled playing alongside some of Calgary's most talented DJs. A BIG thank you to Adrien and the entire Dirty Tones crew who put together such a fantastic event promoting local talent and electronic music. Lastly, I want to send out a HUGE thank you to everyone who spread the word and came out to support the local DJ scene in Calgary during this event! The album cover shows just how overwhelming the experience was for me to play for so many beautiful people - far beyond words. Special thanks again to Patrick Latter who captured this moment (more of his photography can be found at http://www.hikingphoto.com/ ) This mix is a compilation of the 3 sets I played during this special event. Be Where Your Feet Are

Be Where Your Feet Are

As the fall season approaches here in Canada, there has been enough great weather to inspire one last summer mix. Be Where Your Feet Are is a phrase that has taken on more and more meaning to me over the summer months. If you are thinking about the past or the future, you are not present in the moment. This mix was designed as an uplifting backdrop for those moments when you are in the moment, keeping the past and future out of focus. As this podcast explores different musical styles, it's almost comforting to periodically return to the sound that you can relate to the most. This mix is what The Love & The Music is all about. Funky, lyrical, upbeat house music. Of course, thanks to our beautiful 21st Century technology and this thing called the internet, I've had the privileged opportunity to access the sounds of DJs across the globe at the click of a mouse. So, I'd like to take this time to thank the following Podomatic Podcasters for contributing to my DJ education and who have kept me following their creative works for the last several years: Phil Hewson: http://funkylondon.podomatic.com/ Darren Knowles: http://djknocker.podomatic.com/ Scott Zimmerman: http://djzimmo.podomatic.com/ Max Corderoy: http://maxcorderoy.podomatic.com/ Whitney Marrow: http://whitneymarrow.podomatic.com/ B-Liv: http://plantabaja.podomatic.com/ And special thanks to DJ House Cat (http://jusdefacts.podomatic.com/) for some added advice, education and inspiration of late. If you follow this podcast, then you should be well aware of these podcasts. But if not, do check them out! Knock on every door.... Track Listing | Artist | Track (Remix) 1. Welcome to the third annual Summer Inspirations. The nights are getting shorter and colder, but it has been one hell of a summer here in Canada. This year's edition is a blend of funk, soul, jazz, and a hint of rap, reggae and disco. This summer has taken me across four of our beautiful provinces, introduced me to many new beautiful people, soaked me with sunshine and re-ignited my love for the bicycle, the right brain and my deepest roots. If not now, when?" -Hillel Artist | Track (Remix) Basement Freaks - Soul Men Flash Callahan - Give The People A Break Grinny Grandad - The Good Girl (A Skillz) Cisco Cisco - Giro Disco Beatconductor - I Miss U 2 DJ Twister - Ready or Not Express Yourself The Dancefloor Outlaws - Panda Beatvandals - Sunshine (A Skillz) Nile Delta - Chanel Phily Blunt - The Jam Clinton Kids - Bustin' Loose

Australia Reloaded

My DJing journey began in Newcastle, Australia where a buddy of mine convinced me to go halves on a set of Stanton turn tables - so I have to thank Marko for getting me hooked on this. I also want to thank Nash for making me listen to house music for about 6 weeks straight, that seemed to be the final knockout punch. I recently listened to some of the old mixes we made during that time, and decided I had to bring those tunes back to life with some much improved mixing. These tracks are some of the bangin' house tunes from ~2007 which followed me wherever I went on my journey. I think I'm finally safe to say summer is almost here in Canada, and we are lovin' it! A perfect time to continue living the dream!
