It's Casual Friday! Sam and Emma speak with Ryan Grim, reporter at and co-founder of Drop Site News, co-host of Counter Points, to round up the week in news before the holidays. First, Sam and Emma take a look at the spending fight on Capitol Hill after House Republicans failed to pass a continuing resolution to keep the government open. They take a look at CNN's Kaitlan Collins trying to figure out how New York Rep. Mike Lawler can blame House Republicans' failure to pass a spending bill on...Democrats. Then, they're joined by Rep. Ocasio-Cortez as she gives her breakdown of what is happening in the spending fight on the ground on the Hill, and how Elon Musk essentially tanked all forward progress with his posts on Twitter. Heading into a broader discussion, AOC discusses the House Oversight Committee race for ranking member, how she is interpreting that in terms of progress, and she understands her motivations and advocacies as someone steeped in the process of mass movements while representing such an institutional body in Congress. She ends the conversation by framing losses (both in the Oversight Committee and in November) as ones that should not always be seen as fully definitional and declarative of a struggle being completely lost, and take what slight progress they represent as motivation and the impetus to continue to fight for what she, and we, believe in. Then, Ryan Grim joins the program to react to some of AOC's comments, as well as to discuss the fast track to oligarchy this country is on seeing that Elon Musk basically dictated a continuing resolution bill not pass in Congress. Sam, Emma, and Ryan discuss the trajectory they think the Musk/Trump relationship may take and what that would like (potentially catastrophic), and what kind of implications and knock-on effects shutting the government down for the rest of Trump's transition would have. They then discuss how the Democratic Party appears to be a ship without a rudder, the genuine shock that some rank-and-file members got at AOC's showing for the Oversight Committee ranking member floor vote, and the...concerning details that came out in the Wall Street Journal's bombshell reporting on President Biden's functionality during his entire presidency. Luke Savage then joins, diving right into the dwindling support for Trudeau’s administration in the wake of a weak, nationalist-oriented response to Trump’s threat of tariffs against Canada, unpacking the growing dissent from within his coalition before Savage and Emma briefly contrast his response to Trump’s threats with that from the US’ other neighbor-under-threat in Mexico’s President Sheinbaum. Stepping back, Luke examines the rise and fall of Trudeau as the leader of the Liberal Party in Canada, coming to power by leading a major win in 2015 and becoming a hyper-public anti-Trump resistance figure in the process, only for growing economic issues coming out of the COVID-19 Pandemic alongside a poor choice by Trudeau to call for snap elections in 2021 putting the Liberal Party in an insecure situation and forcing a deal with the NDP social democrats. Moving forward in the story, Savage walks Emma through the lingering struggles Liberals have faced in the wake of this deal, with their (and Trudeau’s, in particular) refusal to acknowledge the ongoing cost of living crisis and the failures of their economic agenda significantly dragging down NDP’s public standing to the point of pulling out of the deal this past September, issues capitalized on by a Conservative Party that is, at the bare minimum, willing to recognize the issues facing the Canadian electorate. After expanding on the role of Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre, his success in hiding his unpopular faux-populist crypto-libertarianism behind direct, issues-based communication, and the pretty clear parallels with Biden and Democrats’ recent failures in the 2024 election, Savage wraps up by tackling Canada’s dearth of an actual system to remove someone like Trudeau from power, and how this situation could (and is likely to) develop. Jeff Stein then joins, jumping right into his extensive research at the Washington Post into the explosion of the role of sanctions in US foreign policy, and the vast material impact they have on local populations, first outlining how this policy proliferated in the wake of the serious backlash to US military intervention in Iraq and Afghanistan – with Joe Biden taking Trump’s expansion of the sanction regime to an entirely new level after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine – and how it aligns with the increasing power of the executive branch. Stepping back, Stein walks Emma through the role sanctions play in avoiding both military AND diplomatic intervention on the global stage, despite minimal evidence of their efficacy, and the growing worry inside of government of their long-term impacts with limited short-term benefits, before they wrap up with the myriad material issues that have arisen from the expansion of the US sanction regime, with devastating effects on the abused and exploited populations that these sanctions are ostensibly issued in response to, alongside the (less devastating) unforeseen financial costs to US taxpayers. Sam and Emma speak with Jasper Nathaniel, writer of the Infinite Jaz newsletter on SubStack, to discuss his recent piece in The Drift magazine entitled "In Ruins​: Archaeological Warfare in the West Bank." First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the GOP’s continuing struggle to get a continuing resolution, Pelosi blocking AOC’s run for Oversight chair, the Senate’s National Defense Authorization Act, Ukraine’s bombing of Russia’s chemical weapons chief, TikTok’s Supreme Court fight, Trump’s EV fight, RFK’s meeting with Senators, Trudeau’s shakey administration, US wealth inequality, and Josh Hawley’s CTC for the middle- and upper-classes, before diving a little deeper into Nancy Pelosi’s (notably no longer a member of party leadership) torpedoing of AOC’s bid to be Dem chair on the Congressional Oversight Committee, and touching on Trump’s attempt to run cover for his health and safety-related administrative choices and their rabid anti-vax beliefs. As she walks through Minneapolis’ reaction and overwhelming abolitionist organizing effort in response to the murder of George Floyd, Professor Phelps explores the amorphous relationship between police and crime, and the relationship race and poverty have to both, which puts marginalized communities in such a tight bind when it comes to mitigating all violence, and the ultimate need to rethink where to investment to most benefit public safety. Expanding on the story in Minneapolis, Michelle and Emma unpack the evolution of the political establishment pushback to the abolitionist movement, tackling the relationship between Mayor Frye and the Minneapolis Police Department and the economic incentive of being an entertainment destination for suburbanites, before wrapping up with the ultimate sentencing of killer Cop Derek Chauvin and the minimal reciprocity it provided. Professor Gabriel Hetland then walks Emma through the genuinely incredible “New York State Build Public Renewables Act,” unpacking its plan for a green energy transition and the creation and maintenance of a robust clean energy grid bolstered by union labor, an investment in low and moderate-income workers, and an emphasis on public input and ownership. After briefly touching on the limited vocal support for Yoon from among his conservative allies, Baker steps back to explore the history of South Korea’s conservative ties to dictatorship, beginning with Japan’s brutal 30-year occupation of Korea through the end of the Second World War – an occupation bolstered by cooperation and support from conservative, capitalist, and right-wing Koreans – and through the sequential regimes of Chon Doo-hwan and Park Chung-hee from the 1960s-80s, with Park Geun-hye (daughter of Chung-hee) even rising to the Presidency just a decade ago only to be impeached over her corrupt practices, also unpacking the continued prevalence of authoritarian strains within the South Korean right over the last century. He and Emma then look at the non-coup-related failures of Yoon’s regime that created both his overwhelming unpopularity and the strong opposition he sought to undermine via coup, wrapping up the interview by unpacking the role of the US in backing Yoon’s regime, and what the ideal future of US-Korean relations would look like to the Korean electorate. Professor Giorgio Cafiero then joins, first running through updates on the recent sweeping offensives by Syrian rebels, successfully taking both Aleppo and Hama from the Assad regime, before taking a sharp step back as he walks us through the evolution of the 13-year Civil War, beginning with the Arab spring and spurring the intervention of myriad regional and international actors, through the 2015 intensification of conflict at the hand of increased Russian support for Assad and Iranian-backed groups, and to the lull in tensions that started in 2020, only to break this past week. After parsing through the more specific history of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, and the deep and complex ties between the Syrian and Iranian regimes, Emma and Professor Cafiero tackle the prevalent role of external conflicts in how the impact of these Syrian Rebel conquests will unfold, with Iran’s involvement in Hezbollah’s conflict with Israel and Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine giving two major parties conflicting interests. It's News Day Tuesday! Sam and Emma speak with Ian Millhiser, senior correspondent at Vox, to discuss some of the oral arguments going on in front of the Supreme Court this week. First, Sam runs through updates on South Korean President’s declaration of martial law, Israel’s myriad violations of their ceasefire agreement in Lebanon, the continued gutting of the IRS, US military domestic operations, Scott Walker’s Act 10, the nomination of Kash Patel, Trump’s plurality win, Dinesh D’Souza’s apologies, Trump’s threat to Gaza, US military aid to Ukraine, and Elon’s legal problems, also touching on Democratic Establishment’s staunch opposition to getting money out of primaries. Ian Millhiser then joins, diving right into the impending oral arguments on United States v. Skrmetti, marking the first full hearing on the constitutional question of the government’s ability to restrict the rights of (and explicitly target) transgender people (a term first used at the Supreme Court in 2010), outlining the case’s origin in the extensive red-state backlash to trans rights under the Biden Administration, with myriad prohibitions and restrictions placed on gender-affirming care for people under 18. After stepping back to tackle Skrmetti’s connection to Bostock v Clayton County (2020) and the Court’s decision (held by Chief Justice Roberts and Justice Gorsuch) that any discrimination based on gender identity or sexual orientation constitutes, no matter what, a form of sex discrimination, Millhiser and Sam parse through the various problems that still face the prosecution, including the extension of this question beyond the workplace, and the added context of exceptions for presumptively unconstitutional governmental actions, whether the Court is likely to get fully on-board with the defense’s conspiracy-centered argument about “trans ideology,” and what a more limited (though still devastating) decision in favor of the State’s right to discriminate against trans people could look like. Next, Ian looks to the FDA v. R.J. Reynolds Vapor Co, a case centered on the FDA’s ability to regulate tobacco and tobacco products, first walking through the history of the FDA’s right to regulate tobacco products, and their initial (and very late) attempts to reign in the ever-growing vaping industry beginning in 2016, before wrapping up by expanding on the role of the Chevron doctrine - the deference of the Courts to federal agencies when it comes to reading the ambiguity of federal legislation – in problematizing what should be an open-and-shut case for the Conservative majority. And in the Fun Half: Sam parses through the stream of denunciations from the past life of Trump’s new Defense Secretary nomination Pete Hegseth, including statements from a former non-profit he worked at, and his mother. It's News Day Tuesday! Sam and Emma speak with Richard Beck, senior writer at n + 1 Magazine, to discuss his recent book Homeland: The War on Terror in American Life. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Trump’s tariffs, Trump’s cabinet drama, Trump’s legal woes, Biden’s gift to Trump, deaths under Texas’ abortion ban, Missouri’s ban on trans care for minors, Charlotte’s airport workers’ strike, bird flu, and Mississippi’s runoff election, before diving a little deeper into Biden’s plan to expand Medicare and Medicaid to include weight loss drugs like Ozempic, Trump’s tariff plan, and problems in the Trump cabinet. Richard Beck then joins, jumping right into his particular perspective for the war on terror as a teenager at the time of 9/11, unpacking the bipartisan normalization of the shift to a domestic surveillance state backing a globalized project of enforced American hegemony, and looking at how the Democratic Party (under Obama), in particular, worked to simultaneously present the Bush administration as an aberration, while bureaucratizing, rationalizing, and, ultimately, reinforcing the exact project that was supposedly so absurd. After briefly touching on the window Occupy provided to the Obama administration’s blatant rejection of a progressive movement outside of the political establishment, Beck steps back, diving into the overwhelming media backlash to any sort of critical lens on US hegemony, with a direct line between the “owning the libs” politics of today and the Limbaughian obsession with making fun of the progressive identifiers of the nineties and aughts, alongside a direct tie-in to the bipartisan militarization of American society, be it tanks in police departments, an influx of Humvees on the street, or the catapulting of “SpecOps”-esque comic movies to the forefront of US culture, and how those elements worked to further legitimize the amoral (and often actively immoral) maintenance of US hegemony across the globe. Wrapping up, Richard, Sam, and Emma briefly touch on the particular role of oil in the War on Terror, and why it fails to actually explain the quest for American hegemony in an age of dwindling capitalist expansion, tackling the major role of the US plays well outside of petroleum reserves in an effort, more than anything else, to simply protect its impunity at the top of the global liberal order. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma touch on future coverage of the Longshoremen’s strike, before diving into the continuing death and devastation coming from Texas’ abortion ban, and reflecting on Tim Pool’s desire to make every victim of rape a subject of public criticism if they want an abortion. Mike expands on Bolsonaro’s clear connection to the 2018 assassination of Rio de Janeiro city council member Marielle Franco, before wrapping up by noting the stunning impact this entire affair (and, more importantly, the Court's willingness to act on it) has had on completely decapitating the threat of the Brazilian far-right. Jacob Silverman then walks Sam and Emma through the major influx in crypto spending in the 2024 election cycle, despite the industry’s recent stutters, and touches on the potential issue of an industry dominated by criminal conspiracy and transactions shaping US politics, before zeroing in on the particular role of one Tether, perhaps the largest cryptocurrency on the international level and a central investment of incoming Trump Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick.
