Description

Paulette Erato hosts La Vida Más Chévere de Childfree Latina, the only biweekly Spanglish podcast about living your best life, from the childfree Latina perspective. That life starts with dismantling the toxic cultural BS we've all grown up with in Latinidad. Like assuming everyone wants kids...or the woman should fix her partner a plate at dinner.

F that! End the generational trauma and design best life for YOU instead. Let's get rid of the cultural brainwashing and make decisions and life choices that make us happy instead of merely another victim of The Patriarchy.

Formerly known as the Maker Muse Podcast.

Have you heard of this trend of creating a "word of the year?" Some people think it's woo-woo bullshit, but you know that words have power, and confidence can come from power, so why wouldn't  you want some of that for yourself? Pick up the free workbook for creating your own power word, or theme for the year, and settle in for this process. I promise, it doesn't hurt, but you might be surprised by what you get out of it in the end.To get the full show notes, and an episode transcript, go to TheMakerMuse.co. Comparing ourselves to everyone else is usually a recipe for disaster. And it's also something you can choose NOT to do.   But we do it anyway. Yet we don't pay attention to how others look up to us. Instead we use these comparisons to highlight our own shortcomings. What's the cure to comparisonitis? Here are 3 ways to combat that nasty habit. Boundaries are a good thing to have but all to often it feels like an overwhelming task to create and then enforce them against other people. Because being assertive or even confrontational can be hard!So here are some examples of how to set boundaries for yourself that don't require anyone else to agree to them. Intra-personal boundaries, the kind that are just for you, are a good starting step for eventually setting inter-personal boundaries (the kind you use to deal with the annoying coworker or overbearing relatives). No phones in the bedroomEat your meals at the tableHave a bedtimeTurn off social mediaListen to your bodyTo get the full list, plus the show notes and an episode transcript, go to TheMakerMuse.co.DM me on Instagram if you have questions about this week’s episode. It's (American) football season so here's a mini episode about why grown men slap each other's asses, smack helmets, and act like fools in the end zone—and why you should definitely be doing the same thing. In a word: confidence. You get it by celebrating every step in your progress towards a goal, no matter how tiny or incremental that progress might be. And football players know that. Even if they're team isn't looking like it's going to win, the progress (aka stats) they make as individuals and as a team still matter.Progress matters. Rosalba Fontanez has something she wants all parents of childfree people to hear: this is NOT about you, so stop putting a burden on your children to bear babies!Let's back up because Rosalba herself is a mother. She's my mother, the maker of The Maker Muse herself. And she's just as tired as all us childfree folk are of having to defend the choice (or natural progression) to being childfree. Meet Talia Molé, a fascinating storyteller and healer, for whom storytelling is medicine. It's in the stories of ourselves that we find healing. And in doing so, Talia is able to subvert the idea of modern society by distancing from patriarchal structures while pursuing the story of our ancestors and centering new ideas around motherhood. And she'll tell you how, as an immigrant woman, she's "always in translation." In this episode we address the careless but all too frequent bingo posed in the question of feeling like "less of a woman," which leads to discussions around hysterectomies, Roe v. Wade, and the continued practice of forced births and forced sterilizations.More about Talia:Talia Molé believes in the artist as a rebellious and revolutionary teacher whose purpose is to disrupt the status quo inspiring conversations that lead to greater questioning and awakening within a communal body. As an artist, she has dedicated her time to understanding social change through different social spaces and disciplines within academia and beyond. She molded and polished her role as an activist/scholar with the help of a B.F.A. in Theatre Performance, an M.S. in Counseling, and a PhD in Anthropology and Social Change. Her field of research and exploration revolves around lived expressions of mother/motherhood/mothering, within marginalized populations, that serve as a radical remembrance of matriarchal ancestry, lineage and community. Talia is the founder of "We are Phoenixing" a creative consultation business dedicated to mentoring creative practitioners.Find Talia online at:We are PhoenixingQueering Motherhood: An Inquiry with Alumna Talia Molé (video)DM me on Instagram if you have questions about this week’s episode. Meet Isabel, a firebrand and bold Latina voice promoting the modern childfree lifestyle. This episode was recorded on the day that Roe v. Wade was overturned, and though Isabel is from Colombia, she explains how the reverberations of this landmark decision affect childfree people around the world, and especially in Latin America. We didn't hide our frustrations during this conversation, and we also didn't shy away from delving into heavy topics like white supremacy, forced sterilization, and the dangers of pronatalism. But we also have hope for the impact that our own voices can have for other Latinas, and invite you to join this fight with us.More about Isabel:Isabel loves to create virtual and IRL activities that connect more childfree women from around the World. Whether co-hosting the Childfree Girls podcast or organizing trips with The Uprising Spark, Isabel is the childfree friend you always wanted but never knew you needed.Isabel is a co-founder of Nunca Madre: a Spanish-speaking community for childfree people in Latin America and Spain focused on raising awareness about choice and helping those undecided about having kids.A world traveler, avid kite surfer, and childfree intersectional feminist, Isabel offers safe spaces where other childfree women evolve and grow into the best versions of themselves.DM me on Instagram if you have questions about this week’s episode. Because, as she’ll tell you, “you could learn something from literally anybody.”In this interview with host Paulette Erato, Jessenia paints the story in her own words. Moved by her childhood dynamic featuring Mommy No Money, she instead leans into her mantra asking, “why am I struggling when there’s an easier way to do something?” Listen for more tidbits on creating a series of moments, and how important passion is as an ingredient to your art.Follow Jessenia on Instagram @joxersinsta_jazzkitchen.DM me on Instagram if you have questions about this week’s episode. Why is not wanting to have kids such a big deal to some people? Isn't it totally normal for some people to not want them?Yes, it is normal to not want children. And since the first 14 episodes (or season 1) focused on the creative part of the childfree Latine experience, for these next 12 episodes (season 2) we're going to discuss the childfree part of the creative Latine experience. This is about representation. Childfree Latines are minorities within minorities. It’s not very accepted to be childfree in Latinoamerican cultures, and we’d really like to change that. Because yes, it is normal to not want children. And not wanting children does not equate to hating children.Let's normalize this idea and shift how childfree characters are portrayed in popular media. Do away with the stereotypes perpetuated by the likes of Cruella de Vil, Ursula, and Scar the Lion from Disney movies, which portray childfree characters as jealous, sadistic, and sinister. That's the idea we're feeding to actual children! Forget that Disney movies already have problematic themes. This is another level of yikes! This season will feature the voices of a host of mujeres fuertes, artists and storytellers painting portraits with stories of their own real world experiences. And how being childfree has afforded them the ability to craft their lives on their own terms. They've created life in different ways, nurturing and mothering people in diverse but no less impactful relationships than what we commonly refer to as "parents." After all, "its takes a village," doesn't it?This episode highlights the story of me, Paulette Erato, a childfree Latina woman. And poses the questions: is it actually a choice to be childfree? What if I was just born this way?Plus, what's the distinction between childless and childfree? After this episode, the hope is you will better understand that:Not wanting kids isn’t weird or abnormal, it’s just differentChildfree people aren’t the bitter, selfish, or even dangerous people the media makes them out to be, and that these stereotypes do more harm than goodThat being childfree is a measure of self-awareness, a boundary and limit we’re not willing to cross to please other people—and that is the peak of adultingDM me on Instagram if you have questions about this week's episode.
