I’m always excited to welcome back to the podcast, Darol Anger. Darol has just released an incredible recording project called Diary of a Fiddler 2: The Empty Nest (available HERE)
Intended as a summation not only of his career as a performing and recording artist but also as a capstone to his enormously influential career as an educator, Diary of a Fiddler #2 appears as the acoustic world prepares for the 50th anniversary of the hugely influential David Grisman Quintet recordings which featured Anger. To herald the occasion, and to author a bookend to his own career, he has called upon dozens of his former mentees – three generations of fiddlers – who, taken together, make up a veritable who’s who of the violin-playing world.
Songs featured in this episode:
All tracks featured are available on Darol’s new double album Diary of a Fiddler 2, available HERE….except for Lee Highway Blues by Darol Anger and Stuart Duncan which is on volume 1.

My guest this week is Fred Kosak from the band The Stillhouse Junkies.
Acoustic adventurers Stillhouse Junkies explore the worlds between roots, bluegrass, Texas swing, blues, and rock. Their free-flowing musical interplay and improvisation make every show unique as the trio weave through high-energy, intricately composed original songs, never taking the same path twice. Formed in 2017, the band consists of Fred Kosak (guitar, mandolin), Alissa Wolf (fiddle), and Jeanette Adams (bass).
They have a brand new album, available now, called “The Ballad of Charlie Avalon” and it is fantastic! Great playing and great songs and Sam Bush narrating…..The perfect combination.

This week I welcome back to the podcast Caleb Christopher Edwards. Caleb has a stellar new album out with Zach White, titled, Cheers to All the Lonely People. Which is available everywhere now, including Bandcamp.
This new album by songwriters Zach White & Caleb Christopher Edwards is a warm hug and hearty laugh we all need in our lives. A collection of original songs that evoke a sense of Bluegrass-Nouveau. Familiar forms and instrumental sounds are subtly articulated with unique techniques that evoke both a creative take on the bluegrass playbook and an easy-to-repeat relaxing experience.
Recorded entirely live in the room you can feel the comradery filling the space. Whether it’s Zach’s creative stories of rich characters like Buddha From Muscoutah or Billy’s Horse, or Caleb’s wistful mind paintings in All I Do is Hum or Waltz for Sarah’s Wedding you just want to sit for a spell, light a pipe and drift away.
Zach White and Caleb Christopher Edwards have been long friends and frequent collaborators. Between the two of them, you might have seen them onstage at the Grand Ole Opry, Carnegie Hall, Telluride Bluegrass Festival, or the Ryman (just to name a few). Buckle up for a rip roaring night of bluegrass, story telling, and two friends being goofballs.
Keep up with Caleb at his website HERE and with Zach at his website HERE.

My guest this week on the podcast is Skip Gorman. Skip Gorman was introduced to traditional music early in his life at the age of eight, when he received his first guitar and a Jimmie Rodgers record. While growing up he was lucky to have the opportunity to see musicians like the legendary Texas fiddler, Eck Robertson, Bill Monroe and Maybelle Carter at the historic Newport Folk Festival. An encounter with Monroe at age fouteen was a pivotal moment in the young musician's life, and aside from being a masterful cowboy singer and fine fiddler, Gorman is one of the premier mandolinists in the style of Bill Monroe.
Skip has just uploaded 13 full albums on Bandcamp for the first time….and they really are great stuff! Head over to Bandcamp now to check out some tunes and pick yourself up a copy or 13!
Music that is not Skip’s discussed during the episode…
Greenbriar Boys with Frank Wakefield

My guest this week is Eli West. Eli West is an American Roots musician from the Pacific Northwest. A multi-instrumental creator of sonic spaces, Eli’s former training as a designer informs a sound that is lush and organic – neither manicured nor overgrown. Lauded by Tim O’brien as a musician “making music the World needs,” Eli’s reputation as a crafter of considered, toneful environments has fostered collaborations with Bill Frisell, Andrew Marlin, John
Reishchman, Julie Fowlis, and many other pillars of the growing Americana movement.

Here is part 2 of my conversation with Jody Stecher. Jody Stecher has been teaching and sharing his love for music since his days in the 1960s as a budding folklorist and influential picker in New York City's old-time and bluegrass scene. Stecher has played virtually every stringed instrument, delving deeply into traditional music forms from blues to Bahamain and even Hindustani classical. A musician of constant aesthetic integrity, Jody is regarded as one of America's leading traditional folk artists. You might know him from his work with Peter Rowan as well. These days, he lives in the Bay Area and enjoys singing and performing songs with his wife, Kate Brislin.
To keep up with Jody you can head over to his website here where you can contact him for lessons or purchase some of his music!
