It was great to welcome back Fraught back onto the podcast. Fans of the band will remember that they were previously named 'Drought'. I was joined by Dave (Guitars) & Podge (Drums) of the experimental death/sludge Dublin metal band. “Transfixed on Dying Light” was released onthe 24th November 2023 via Argonauta Records and immediately received critical acclaim from all corners of the globe. The five piece band that recorded the release are completed by Andy on bass/sludge vocals; along with ex- members Mark on vocals and Garóg on guitars. They are all huge fans of death metal, black metal, doom and sludge so we discussed how they all brought a different element of those influences to the table and weaved it into their own sound and direction. We covered the build up to the release “Transfixed on Dying Light” along with record label changes, gigs and many more interesting topics along with Mark and Garóg leaving. Letty caught up with Dublin shoegaze/alt rock band Fulvetta before they went on stage at The Grand Social supporting U.S band post hardcore band Drug Church. The four piece consisting of AJ (Guitars/Vocals), Dylan (Drums), Grace (Bass) & Sam (Guitars) is Dublin’s answer to the reincarnated shoegaze sound. The melancholic gloom of the 90s alternative echoes throughout as brooding guitar riffs drenched in reverb and fuzz intertwine with whispered layers of vocals to create an intense, yet melodic, wall of sound. Drawing influences from shoegaze pioneers Slow Dive, My Bloody Valentine, Hum and The Smashing Pumpkins, Fulvetta create a bite-size piece of 90s alt-rock nostalgia. Welcome everyone to The Metal Cell Live YouTube Stream for February. Joining me was Danielle, Evan, Howard, Letty and our special guest was Pat O'Regan ex-host of The Smashing Skull Sessions. We talk to Pat about his incredible two years as host and some of the fantastic bands he had on. Pat had a huge influence on converting many of us to the very unique and insanely talented musicians that inhabit the post metal/post rock scene worldwide. We delve into some of Pats favourite memories as well as some great stories. Pat has handed over the torch to new host Letty for a different direction musically and Letty will put her own unique stamp on The Smashing Skull Sessions, as Pat did. We also talk about a few positive changes to The Metal Cell in relation to episode output and creativity. The topic of the night was a look at and cost breakdown of some of our favorite festivals to look forward to in the summer months of 2024. Thanks as always for the support and please 'SUBSCRIBE' to The Metal Cell/Smashing Skull Sessions YouTube channels! Thanks, Richie.

Beithíoch is a death/black metal solo project from the northwest of Ireland with a name that, translated from Irish, means ‘Beast’. Beithíoch's music, spanning several releases, is as unsettling as it is captivating, marked by unusual old Irish, Greek and Norse inspired lyrics and stories. Existing on the fringes of black/death metal, it does not fully apply to the core essences of this type of music which makes for a fascinating for the listener. We discuss the inception of the solo project, the themes and lyrics of Beithíoch's latest brilliant ep 'Beowolf'. I also talk to him about his approach to writing music, the next step in the evolution of Beithíoch, his views on the current metal culture/scene in Ireland and many more insights into the artist know only as Beithíoch. Hope you enjoy the interview and please 'SUBSCRIBE' to The Metal Cell YouTube channel. Thanks Richie. It was a pleasure to welcome back Jude McIlwaine (guitarist/vocals) of three piece thrash inferno Acid Age to the podcast. The band have had a busy 2023 gig wise with the culmination of recording a live concert in Belfast in December 2023, along with that there's an upcoming studio release for fans to sink their teeth into for 2024. Myself and Joe of Gama Bomb get some updates on the both releases that are currently being readied in the Acid Age camp, we talk about the development of Judes new finger picking style, a possible change in vocal delivery, new music and we delve into a few of our favourite thrash acts in this jam packed episode. As always please make sure you're SUBSCRIBED to both the YouTube channel and podcast for more episodes like this. Thanks, Richie. James Tippett (Vocals) & Elliot Reynolds (Guitar) of Sheffield Hardcore band Rough Justice talk to Letty about their debut full length 'Faith In Vain' released on January the 12th this year. A semi-discography, the record is interwoven with violent, impactful and introspective material that gives Faith In Vain a unique feel and encapsulates what Rough Justice is all about. The lads talk about the UK hardcore scene, go into details about the recording of 'Faith In Vain' and as huge metal fans, the band has subconsciously introduced more sophisticated guitar parts and structures, without departing from the straightforward heaviness that has maintained their popularity since their inception. The band themselves didn't target a specific sound or set of influences while writing the record which is arguably what makes it difficult to compare with much else. Faith In Vain is a showcase of unique song structures and riffs that highlight the band's progression as songwriters without ever losing sight of their hardcore sensibilities. Please 'SUBSCRIBE' to The Metal Cell YouTube Channel if you want to see more interviews like this. Thanks. It was a pleasure to welcome Dan Pearson (Lead Vocals/Guitar), Ben Keating (Vocals/Guitar) & Moe Curtain (Bass) of Chemical Addiction to the podcast. The Kilkenny four-piece with Daire Nolan on Drums released an incredible EP called 'Backburner' in 2023, which was the culmination of many years of touring and releasing singles. Here's Pat O'Regan of The Smashing Skull Sessions take on it: 'There are many grunge tribute bands out there plying their trade, and good luck to them all, but if you want to savor the grunge experience properly, why not absorb it through original music and from a band that are playing at a very high level. Backburner is a slab of alternative rock that will appeal to many tastes. It has a bite to it and an energy emanating from it, that’s downright infectious.' Myself and Evan another Kilkenny native and ex-member chat with Dan, Ben and Dublin native Moe about the formation of the band, some legendary venues and gigs, we do a track by track walk through of the EP and some hilarious stories all add to one of my favorite interviews in the last few months. It was a pleasure to welcome Conor Jordan (Bassist), Dan O'Connor (Drums)& Matt O'Brien (Guitarist) of Dublin Thrashers Crossfire on to the show. The band along with Kevin O’Connor-Conroy (Vocals/Guitars) formed in 2012, and have established their reputation as one of Ireland’s premier thrash metal bands, utilizing a mix of sci-fi and horror-inspired lyricism and imagery with their own blend of the progressive ambition of old school metal with the aggression and intensity of modern thrash metal. Myself and Joe of Gama Bomb talk to the lads about their savage debut release 'Switch To Reset', signing to WormholeDeath Records, song-writing and riffage, gigs, the history of the band and many more subjects on this episode.
