I wouldn't be much of a food blogger if I didn't comment on the recent discovery that has rocked the food world. Yesterday, Paula Dean announced that she has diabetes. I myself am not surprised, have you seen the foods she cooks? If you haven't here are three examples.
Brown Sugar Bacon
Bacon Cheeseburger Meatloaf
Ultimate Fantasy Deep-Fried Cheesecake
Ok Ok... These are some extreme cases, in fact if you go to her website she has many more healthy recipes then unhealthy ones. Also, if you watch her show she promotes moderation and knows you're not supposed to eat like this all the time.
Now..... Here is the twist. Not only did she announce that she had diabetes, but she also announce that she now a celebrity endorser for the diabetes drug company Norvo Nordisk . So you can say she profiting from teaching people to eat unhealthily, and then she's profiting again from selling the drug to control the disease you get from eating this way.
This story is very personal because my mother has diabetes. I've warned her that if change her diet and exercise she would end up like the matriarch in the movie "Soul Food." I know that's a little extreme, but I think she got the point when we calculated her BMI (Body Mass Index).
This week my mother joins me on The Mighty Mixer, we will be making a recipe by Boddy Dean, Paula Dean's son. Bobby Dean has been taking his mother's recipes and making them healthier. The music was chosen my my mother, she likes alot of line dance music like the Cupid Shuffle and stuff like that. Yes, I played Wobble by the V.I.C., No it's me trying to be mean, she really likes that song.

Broccoli Beef
Steve Aoki has a new CD that just came out. In his honor we made broccoli beef and had a kitchen listening party.
Broccoli Beef Recipe
recipe from simplerecipes.com
Ingredients
3/4 pound flank or sirloin, sliced thinly across the grain
3/4 pound broccoli florets
2 tablespoons high-heat cooking oil
2 cloves garlic, very finely minced or smushed through garlic smusher
1 teaspoon cornstarch, dissolved in 1 tablespoon water
For the beef marinade
1 teaspoon soy sauce
1 teaspoon Chinese rice wine (or dry sherry)
1/2 teaspoon cornstarch
1/8 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
For the sauce
2 tablespoons oyster sauce
1 teaspoon Chinese rice wine (or dry sherry)
1 tablespoon soy sauce
1/4 cup chicken broth
Method
1 Marinate the beef: Stir together the beef marinade ingredients in a medium bowl. Add the beef slices and stir until coated. Let stand for 10 minutes
2 Prepare the sauce: Stir together the sauce ingredients in a small bowl.
3 Blanch the broccoli: Cook the broccoli in a small pot of boiling, salted water until tender-crisp, about 2 minutes. Drain thoroughly.
4 Heat a large frying pan or wok over high heat until a bead of water sizzles and instantly evaporates upon contact. Add the cooking oil and swirl to coat. Add the beef and immediately spread the beef out all over the surface of the wok or pan in a single layer (preferably not touching). Let the beef fry undisturbed for 1 minute. Flip the beef slices over, add the garlic to the pan and fry for an additional 30 seconds to 1 minute until no longer pink, Pour in the sauce, add the blanched broccoli and bring to a boil. Pour in the dissolved cornstarch and cook, stirring, until the sauce boils and thickens, 30 seconds.
The Hat
I love candy! And when I read a story on epicurious.com about the shoes Katy Perry wore in the California Girls video, I thought this would be great for blog post on food andmusic. Katy Perry is on TMZ alot these days because of her divorce from Russel Brand. If your looking for information about the split… I provided you with the link.
For this recipe you will need:
Candy Buttons – The ones you used to eat and then use the paper to make spit wads.
Glue Dots - You can also use hot glue…. but you’re just asking to burn yourself!
A White Hat - You can use anything you want! Hat, Tennis Shoes, Pumps, a tiemaybe? White is probably your best bet.
The glue dots are very easy to use, just peel a candy button from the wax paper, press it on a glue dot and the the glue will be attached. Place you button on your “hat”.
Start in the middle, space your dots equally and great your first line. Feel free to be creative and make your own design. Once you have your first line start working your way outward and keep your lines strait.
The Mix
I created this mix using Ableton Live. I used many different Katy Perry remixes and blended all into a nice little mini mix. If you have the program and you would like to create something like but you don’t know where to get acapellas try visiting Acapellas4U. This is a great free resource for finding acapellas for free!!!!
