The Book of Job #38 (10:1-7) God Is No Man

God is no man. That is the claim that Job makes and which we agree with. But what does it mean? If God were a man, we can easily excuse his actions, after all, he would only be human. But God’s action baffle mankind. This has been the case for all of our history. But it raises the question that is inthe back of Job’s mind. Why does God act as if he were a man? Our answer give in this episode can be said like this: Our opinion of God’s action come from a limited perspective from which we see those actions, and not from our revelationof God. For the believers the revelation we have is Christ, and his life, his actions are what become central to us. The Book of Job #35 (9:1-13) God’s Day in Court

Job 9:1-13 starts and ends like this: “How can a man be vindicated before God; God does not relent in his anger.” This of course is not a direct quote, but it encapsulates the idea we are given in this portion of scripture by Job. This raises questions in our minds: Why do we want to be vindicated? Why would God do that? Is God really always angry? We will be diving into the mental exercise that Job is doing in this chapter. Namely, thinking about what would happen if he brought a case before God. The 3 large and general divisions that we can make in Job 9:1-13 are as follows: Can man be made right before God? How about if we took God to court? God will not turn away his anger. How this idea fits into the larger context of Job is fascinating. Because Job’s point here is to bring a lawsuit before God, which in his time meant to bring your case before your adversary and allow them to cross examine you. Later in the book of Job we find that Job himself makes an official declaration of dispute against God, and in time, God does cross examine Job, and Job of course has nothing to say in return. You might ask: Where is the encouragement in this story? And I would start by reminding you, that there is nothing that you can do to change God. You might say: That is not encouraging. But it is. You don’t want a God that you can change to be more like you. That would not be a God at all, and honestly, not much of an idol either. We must be content with struggling with God until our blessing comes, in whichever way that is. We must realize, that even if we have our day in court with God, he will always win. Mankind, I posit here, has a kind of internal drive to be justified. To be made whole again. Job understood this, which is why he asked the question he does at the start of chapter 9. But he also realizes that only God can make us righteous, if only his anger relents. The hope for this, is ultimately and with finality and at the exclusion of all other possibilities, only found in Christ, the Son of God. That is the good news, the Gospel. And the Gospel is, in a nutshell this: God is an angry God, who is coming for evil, to destroy it, to do away with it. And you are amongst that. Unless you accept Christ. And even in Christ, you might suffer, but you are saved and assured of it. Through the darkness, through the pain, through the suffering, God, through Christ will save you. And that is wonderful news.

The Book of Job #34 (8:11-22) Confidence vs. Faith

In this episode we continue our look at Bildad’s first speech in the book of Job. The godless man is one who forgets God, even despises Him. And this faithlessness in God, creates in the godless man a confidence that is false in nature. Though it is false, it looks like something that can be trusted. This is true primarily because the object of a godless man's confidence are the “things” that he possesses. But we all know too well, that our "things" are all too fragile. Yet, many men tend to depend on them entirely.   This means there is a cycle to this confidence that the godless man has. It starts as a seed. The seed is the faithlessness towards God, the forgetting and despising of God. This can start very small, remember Eve in the garden, the fruit was pleasing to her eye. This confidence then grows very strong and powerful, increasing the godless man's trust on what he has and what he can accomplish. Lastly, this godless man is removed from his confidence and his possessions dispersed, and the confidence itself, personified in the book of Job, goes on to trick another man.   The deep idea that lies behind Bildad’s speech at the end of chapter 8 in Job, is that of sudden reversal. We see the sudden reversal in the life of a righteous man, Job, and we note that he comes away fearing God and blessing God. But what happens when sudden reversal, that is, the taking away of life and the "things" of life are removed in a moment, from the godless man? He withers away.   What is most deceptive about the confidence the godless man experiences however, is that his life, to all the onlookers, seems formidable, grand and nearly impossible to do away with. But that is only a facade.   The righteous man is represented by Job in two ways. The rich man, blessed beyond his wildest dreams. And the man pressed down into desperation by the calamity he experiences. Christian’s ought to know, that our life experience can run the spectrum of these two extremes.   What does the godly, righteous man have then? He has the gift of faith and grace. A gift that God himself provides, a gift that sees beyond the perishable things of the world into the eternal kingdom of God.   Having such faith however means one thing. The world will hate you. The price to follow Christ is often hate by the world. It's not always front and center. But depending on the times, in can be fierce and direct. How we confront this world, either by going along with it, that it might go well for our life on earth, or that we love Christ to the point of being hated by the world, will answer the question that matters most and one we ask over and over in this episode: Do you have confidence or do you have Faith? For your convenience we have provided chapters for you. 00:00 - 13:24 Introduction 13:25 - 28:47 The Godless Man 28:48 - 52:30 Confidence in the World 52:31 - 59:44 The Sudden Reversal 59:48 - 1:12:58 The Gift of Faith Subscribe Support Blog Twitter At The Mind of Miz Podcast, our first goal is to engage people of faith in a deeper understanding of scripture while reaching out to the unbeliever so that they may hear the Gospel taught in a way consistent with the Bible which we believe can change their lives and bring them to salvation. The Book of Job #33 (8:8-10) Wisdom at Play

In this episode we continue our look at Bildad’s first speech in the book of Job. Wisdom is all around us. In the past and the present and in between. But what do we make of it? And how do we harness it to the glory of God? These are the questions that underly my thoughts in this episode. We start by taking a look at Job’s cry to God in chapter 7 and go through to Bildad’s insistence on human wisdom which is no replacement for what Job is looking for, an answer from God himself. Throughout the episode we learn that the past is something we can know and glean from, but the future is largely uncertain. And that means that we have to look back to gain wisdom. The trick is to know that God’s wisdom is much more helpful than man’s wisdom, but that both play a role in our understanding of human experience. We also explore the knowledge of God and how he knows all things and more importantly knows us more than we can know ourselves. This leads us to one of two problems, leaning on human wisdom too much, or ignoring it all together. Wisdom at play, the title of this episode, we come to define as the proper balance of all the knowledge God has provided us, so we can know what to make of our human experience and come to glorify him. The Book of Job #32 (8:1-7) God Orders The World

In today's episode we take a look at Bildad’s first speech in the book of Job. We see a defense of the doctrine of retribution by Bildad as well as a defense of the righteousness of God, the latter of which we can appreciate more than the former. The most significant development in this chapter, so far as I can tell, is the cosmic ordering of God, from which we borrow the title for this lesson. Here we learn about God’s sovereignty over the world. Another important development is Bildad’s theological stance and how he “digs in his heels,” as it where, on a doctrine that is true but not formulaic to life. We learn also that there is much truth to what Bildad says, and we want to truly learn from this and apply the truth to our own lives, even if his advice was wrongly applied to Job in the context of Job’s particular situation. Another interesting development in the verses we cover is that forgiveness is not apparent, neither is any meaningful talk of repentance, though we do see a hint of it in verse five. The verses offer a cold view where only retribution is considered. There is also a judicial view of God that connects to the bigger theme of God’s order, but it sees God as one who can give good things in exchange for good deeds, one must be “pure and right” (v6). There is some irony, perhaps unintended here also, in verse six Bildad speaks of God being roused or awakened, something Job feels he has had enough of. The section ends with the idea of Job’s “righteous estate” being restored which confuses “success” with righteousness. We learn here that Job was always in his “righteous estate” and had remained there. We know this from the previous chapters that describes Job accepting God as the one who gives and takes away. In this last section, Bildad also assumes that Job’s great future behavior will provide him with great increase, again ignoring God’s sovereign grace. Some of the things you will hopefully pick up in this lesson and be able to think about are that: God is an ordering God. That you can trust him. That you ought not to go against him. That his righteousness will often hit hard (calamity). But that we are to stay humble and stay true. God’s order, law and justice will prevail, and do so for the benefit of the believer. For your convenience we have provided chapters for you. 00:00 – Introduction 8:15 - 10:14 Prayer & Scripture Reading 10:14 - 13:31 Overview 13:32 - 29:23 The Back & Forth of Bildad & Job 29:23 - 34:55 Bildad Defends Divine Retribution 34:55 - 36:34 Bildad Defends the Righteousness of God 36:37 - 44:11 God Cosmically Orders the World 44:25 - 53:33 Digging Heels into Theology 53:39 - 01:15:23 Where is Grace? Subscribe Support Blog Twitter At The Mind of Miz Podcast, our first goal is to engage people of faith in a deeper understanding of scripture while reaching out to the unbeliever so that they may hear the Gospel taught in a way consistent with the Bible which we believe can change their lives and bring them to salvation. A Golden Age #4

In today's episode we talk about the infallibility of the Bible, but admit that there are difficulties within in it too. Yet, these difficulties, should drive us towards the Bible and not away from it. We also talk about how the infallible teaching of the Bible should be part of the process of reframing our political thought. One idea I explore here is that the believer and unbeliever can be more amicable if the Christian admits, yes there are difficulties in the Bible and the unbeliever does not categorically dismiss the Bible because of its difficulties. This idea is not original to me, I owe much to Pinnock on this matter. The Book of Job #28 (6:25-30) Truthful Speech

In today's episode we talk about being truthful in our speech. We also talk about the importance of resisting the proclivity of disregarding the speech of a man in despair. Note: Our episodes are recorded live and the teaching is presented to our listeners with no edits through the main teaching (of course we add music and intro/outro).
