MJs last episode before she went off to an internship across the country! Join us as we discuss our hate for long-distance group projects, how video game skills can be put on a resume, what different types of leadership look like to us individually, and what it REALLY takes to be a high-level NBA player. Also, video games are amazing. (We swear we know how to tie topics together.)
We're back! Andy and JJ do a little catching up; we kick it off by discussing the woes of job hunting in a pandemic, JJ's Olympic-level procrastination abilities, Battle Royales (the video game genre), and what we love about the Dark Souls series. Gaming fans may (or may not) enjoy this one.
*Volume Warning* - Play this at a slightly lower volume than you normally do, at least for the first 30 minutes (there were slight technical difficulties due to the number of people recording simultaneously). Happy 420! In this episode we have a few close friends join us! We laugh (a lot) as we recall the first time we got faded, the most we've been faded, and the different reasons why someone might get into consuming the “Devil’s Lettuce”. We also discuss the importance of safety, comfortability, and moderation. Did we mention we laugh a lot?
This episode we bring out our inner weeb (just kidding, we don't use that term) as we discuss some of our favorite Anime, why everyone should give Anime a try (yes even you), and how powerful the medium can be. We even drop in some beginner recommendations. Join us as we discuss what makes Anime so amazing!
*Disclaimer*: There were some technical difficulties while recording this episode, so the audio mixing/quality is a little weird. Our apologies in advance, but it's still a good one! This episode is ALL about Marvel comics and the MCU. Andy and JJ discuss what we liked about WandaVision, why you SHOULDN'T empathize with Thanos, and acknowledge some of our favorite Marvel characters. We do a little bit of deep-diving into the background of some characters and how a medium like comic books can influence real-life (more media literacy talk), so if you love Marvel and comics this one is for you.
In light of the recent attacks on Asian-Americans, we discuss the importance of the historical context of racism against Asian-Americans, how Black activism is tied to Asian-American activism, our own stories of experiencing/witnessing racism, and some of the ways we can do better moving forward. This topic is much more complex than an hour can encompass, even still we hope at least one person can take away something from this discussion that can inspire them to action and help unlearn certain behaviors. *Disclaimer: JJ gets minor details about some events/facts wrong. Yuji Ichioka coined the term "Asian-American" and it was Daniel Dae Kim and Daniel Wu that offered money for info on the perpetrator of the crime.
We use a classic dilemma proposing game, known as "would you rather," as a jumping-off point to talk about topics we're all passionate about. We cover basketball, gaming, technology (social media vs search engines, specifically), short vs long-term memory loss, and whether or not we can take Chucky the doll in a fight. It gets (semi)deep. It gets weird.
Do you ever wonder what makes a story, a game, a movie, tv show, or any worthy piece of media good? Part of it is because many times they refer to real life issues. There are basically messages in the story. Whether you like it or not, many times that message is political. So that's why we think it's important to really understand the message in the content that we consume. A lot of people don't. Whether it's telling LeBron to "Shut Up and Dribble" or people wanting to keep politics out of sports and video games, it's impossible to really ignore. Part of that problem is really understanding media literacy and why it's important. Check out this episode if this remotely interests you.
In this episode, we reflect on our life stories that resulted in who we are. Specifically, we each discuss the experiences that led us down the professional path we're currently taking. We talk about switching majors constantly, business, library work, communication studies, and more. We also share some stories about high school, college, and the moments that led us to the point in our professional lives we're at now. Don't worry, it doesn't get too serious!
We all play video games, some more than others. Media and non-gamers have misconceptions about video games. In this episode, we talk a lot about the benefits of playing video games using scientific research and attempt to dispel some of the stigma surrounding it. Video games are for everyone and anyone. If you think about it, gaming weaves itself into the fabric of our lives. It's currently the BIGGEST industry within entertainment. There's a lot to cover, including our own early gaming memories. Let's play!
We welcome our dear friend, Lily! She's a physical education teacher and volleyball coach. We hear firsthand how she teaches and relates to her students via distance learning during COVID. She goes into detail about how distance learning impacts the mental health of both students and teachers. We also share our relationships and personal experiences with mental health.
This week's episode is another Reddit reading! We discuss out-of-pocket tinder messages, what happens when you give an inappropriate (but hilarious) nickname to your child's stuffed animal, and what it's like to babysit other people's kids (and talk about raising kids in general). It gets a little wild, but we have plenty of laughs too.
In this episode, we talk about a few recent events pertaining to some of the things we're passionate about: Star Wars, Breakdancing, and video games. Andy raves about the insane amount of Star Wars media coming out in the near future, MJ talks about breakdancing being approved for the Olympics 2024 and what that means for the culture, and JJ discusses the various issues surrounding the release of Cyberpunk 2077 (almost as many issues as there are bugs in the game!).
On this episode, we do a round of Reddit readings, where we each find a funny Reddit post and talk about it! We have a wild ride talking about crazy text messages, awful roommates, pettiness, and cops.
Buckle up! It's a long episode. We had a really great chat about each of our experiences growing up as Asians in our respective towns and how that impacted our lives and identity. Also, how do you say Ranch 99?
Join the MM crew as we discuss our favorite (and least favorite) Thanksgiving dishes, laugh about the origin of the turkey as a Thanksgiving mascot while JJ puts on a weird posh accent, mention gross COVID testing practices, telling (or not telling) kids about Santa, and have a brief (but important) discussion about Seasonal Affective Disorder/mental health awareness, plus more!
You like coffee? Well we're gonna learn ya somethin' today! On this episode, we talk about Sahra Nguyen's coffee company, Nguyen Coffee Supply, and how they're championing for positive social impact. Her mission is to reclaim the trendy culture of Vietnamese coffee by crediting the farmers that produce them. Listen to hear more about her story and our reactions and thoughts on representation, social impact in business, and also beer culture. Linked to Sahra's coffee company: https://nguyencoffeesupply.com/
Bye den! In this episode, listen to our thoughts on the elections and the state of the US. We discuss the anxiety and stress held during the lead up to election week, emphasize the importance of education in relation to informed voting (especially with older Asian and rural communities), and express confusion about weird political celebrity endorsements. Warning: we get a lil passionate.
On this episode, the Misguided Miscreants relive their favorite horror movies, video games, and Halloween memories.
Join the MM crew and Aaron as they have a chill session reminiscing about the past. Andy and Aaron come down to the OC to hang out with JJ and MJ for an in-person episode. Some topics include stories about COVID, our past memories, and REALLY random stuff. Disclaimer: we may or may not have been under the influence. :)
