On Saturday 15 February 2020, it was announced that Caroline Flack, the former British actress-turned-TV presenter, most recently of the popular TV reality show, Love Island, had died. The following day, her family confirmed that she had taken her own life.
At the time of writing, the debate continues to rage as to who or what was ultimately responsible for her losing the will to live. In this episode of The Model Leader I put forward the opinion that in some way we're all to blame - at the very least, for not challenging and disempowering the use of the toxic rhetoric that prevails in mainstream and social media - and for not influencing better standards of behaviour in the people around us: leading by example and voicing our disapproval when their behaviour towards others falls short.
It is too late for Caroline, but if we each make the commitment to be a leader for positive change in our own lives and the lives of others - to be A Leader for Truth and Accountability (#ALTA) - then maybe we will save others from the same fate and her death will not have been in vain.
If you feel that there is value in this podcast, could I please ask you to share it as widely as possible, using the hashtag #ALTA?
