Deena Kastor on programming our minds for the marathon of life ahead.
Deena Kastor, world class American long-distance runner won the bronze medal in the Olympic women's marathon in Athens. An eight-time national champion in cross country Deena won both the Chicago Marathon and then the London Marathon, setting an American record. Deena is an athlete who has defied the odds over and over again to achieve her dreams and smash through barriers. This show helps us reprogram our minds for the marathon of life ahead. Here's what we cover with Deena in this show.     When people ask Deena what she does, how does Deena like to reply? Deena said "I’m slower than I was, I am not going to run a 2.19 ever again.”Creating a new identity. What Deena learnt about the struggle that comes with running a marathon? Can we come to learn to embrace struggle? Deena’s proudest moment came in Chicago where she placed 6th, 7 mins slower that her PB, why was that so special? In 2008 mile 3 of the Olympic Marathon, Deena was favoured to run well, and finished the race in a bus. The process of dealing with that time and repairing our spirit. Every marathon it’s hard, how we think about a thought that will serve us better. Compartmentalising, how do we do that? How do you bring yourself to the moment at the start line when it is all on the line? At the start line and you Kenyans to your left, Ethiopians to your right, they are going to gang up and work against you…how did you build the belief that you can actually be your best Understanding and defining disappointment, How does Deena view disappointment?  Barack Obama said "there is nothing more defining of our character or satisfying to our spirit than giving our all to a difficult task" what was the darkest moment Deena faced in a race that brought the most satisfying moment? Deena was found to have melanoma’s and was told they could be genetic, how did that impact Deena? Deena was adopted, how did Deena view adoption and was there a story created in her own mind at that time? Without Limits - The purpose of running was to test the spirit of the human heart, would Deena agree? Why Marathon is such a beautiful race. Deena talks of having an angel and a devil on your shoulder, how do we manage that dialogue? Can Kipchoge's do it… can he run a sub 2hr Marathon? Not over trained, but under recovered, not over working, under rested.     LINKS Deena Kastor website http://deenakastor.com   The Mojo Radio Show website themojoradioshow.com The Mojo Radio Show on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/TheMojoRadioShowPodcast/   The Mojo Radio Show on Twitter https://twitter.com/tmrspod   The Mojo Radio Show Answering Machine 08 7200 6656 08 7200 MOJO   The Mojo Radio Show copyright Gary Bertwistle & Darren Robertson   Products or companies we discuss are not paid endorsements. The Mojo Radio Show EP 205: Lessons From A SWAT Point Man - Dave Acosta
Dave Acosta is a mental fitness coach and speaker on elite leadership. A former point-man on the Las Vegas SWAT, he works globally with elite military and security forces. Dave studies what makes the elite -- elite. In this show, we discuss the formula Dave created that includes four common denominators that every elite performer possesses. Here’s what we cover in this show with Dave.   When people ask Dave what he does, how does he like to reply? The front of Dave's website says, “Your Defining Moment." Why that statement? Do we need to be more aware of our surroundings today? What is Dave telling his kids when they are out and about? When asked to consult the Navy SEALS in Iraq, how did he handle his mindset amongst elite performers in a combat situation? Teamwork for SEALS was different from anything Dave had seen….why? SEALS know that if they cut a corner, someone else will play the price. Who pays?  Never cut corners…what does that mean in the forces?  Dave has a unique quality, he reinforces his students trust in themselves. How does he go about doing that? Dave believes in three things: recognise, assess and react - he explains that to us. Dave is a mental fitness coach; a corporate worker is not fit if they are mentally unfit. Where should they start to get mentally fit? How do elite performers sustain their high level of performance? Is purposeful suffering a form of stress inoculation?  In Iraq, Dave learned, "I’m capable." He said to himself, "I’m capable." What made Dave believe that? What has Dave eliminated from his work to make is more efficient or productive? Quitting and giving up are two different things - why?   LINKS   Dave Acosta http://daveacosta.com/   Fight Back Nation training with Dave Acosta http://www.fightbacknation.org   Jason Mraz https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wZi3gJSWd4Y   The Mojo Radio Show website themojoradioshow.com   The Mojo Radio Show on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/TheMojoRadioShowPodcast/   The Mojo Radio Show on Twitter https://twitter.com/tmrspod   The Mojo Radio Show Answering Machine 08 7200 6656 08 7200 MOJO   The Mojo Radio Show copyright Gary Bertwistle & Darren Robertson   Products or companies we discuss are not paid endorsements.
