Also I answer a very personal question, and you get a very personal answer from Senator Alan K. Simpson about the response to the 1986 bill that he helped to pass.

What happened after the 1986 Immigration Act that led to the current immigration crisis? We will explore this question as we go through the 1990s, post Sept. 11, 2001, policies and the implementation of DACA by President Barack Obama's administration. We will also hear two sides of a common argument: Does America have a shortage of workers, or does America simply have a shortage of qualified workers?

Crisis at the border: How did we get here, and how can we fix this? It may surprise you to know that to answer the first question, we have to go back not to the presidency of Donald Trump or even Barack Obama, but to 1986 and the administration of Ronald Reagan. This first episode of the Morgan Files will guide you through the bipartisan, landmark immigration bill that allowed about 3 million people to apply for citizenship. We will hear from Sen. Alan Simpson (R-Wyoming), about what it took to get that legislation passed, what parts failed and the likelihood that anything like it could be passed today. You'll also gain a better understanding of my background and why Simpson's message is personal to me.
