We're back after an extended hiatus! And to help mitigate that long absence, we're discussing a double-feature of horror movies for Halloween! What do 2014's "The Babadook" and "Goodnight Mommy" besides having been made in the similarly named countries of Australia and Austria, respectively? Well, they're both fascinating and excellent films . . . but that's not all! Join us and find out what makes these movies a particularly apt pairing!

Join us for a discussion of the 1933 fantasy-adventure classic "King Kong" . . . a film that has been endlessly imitated and remade, but never improved upon. Why does this movie still work so well, and what makes Peter Jackson's version of the story so bad? We have the answers!

In this episode, we're discussing Terry Gilliam's surreal dystopian fantasy, released in 1985 after an epic struggle with the studio to release a cut that he was happy with. Gilliam's cut didn't do particularly well in theaters, but almost 30 years later, it is widely beloved. Not universally beloved, though . . . Let's just say one of us wasn't as taken with the movie as the other was. But we had a great conversation about it anyway!

Join us for a discussion of Otto Preminger's classic 1959 courtroom drama, still revered in legal circles today, and of the strangeness (but also, perhaps, familiarity) of American culture just a few short decades ago. Great writing and great performances unite to create a truly memorable (if maybe a tad overlong) film starring the likes of James Stewart and George C. Scott.

We tossed around a lot of ideas for which movie to continue with, but then we realized how much we had already been discussing Noah. It was the clear choice, and we had a great time talking about it even more. We’ve also, I hope, made a few technical improvements in quality as part of figuring out how to record our podcast now that we live in different states. Oh, and we retooled the intro, and I’m much happier with it now. Enjoy!

First, a few words of introduction: A few years ago, I kicked around the idea of doing a movie podcast with my younger brother, and fellow moviegoer, Micah (who lived in the same town at the time). We discussed the idea at some length, and even went so far as to play around with an intro and plan an initial episode, but times got busy and it just never happened. Several months ago, as Micah was preparing to move away, we were both still thinking about that podcast episode we’d never gotten around to recording, and we decided to just sit down and do it. The result was a fun, enjoyable, half-hour conversation about the movie Signs. It is decidedly unpolished, and there are some technical issues that may prove distracting in places. I suppose it could just languish in private obscurity as an unaired pilot to a series that never happened . . . But I don’t want that. I’d like to go ahead and put it out here as the first of what I hope will be some (many?) more episodes, in the hopes that someone may find it enjoyable in an amateurish sort of way as we work to plan and improve our next attempt.
