The Mummer's Farce

The Mummer's Farce is a podcast about the visual production of HBO's Game of Thrones. Join hosts Dan Solberg and Kate Berry as they break down each episode of Game of Thrones, sorted chronologically by director with specific focus on cinematography, production, and adaptation.

Episode 61 - HotD Season 1 Wrap Party

It had it's ups and downs, it's fire and blood, it's young dashing Criston Cole and it's equally dashing slightly older Criston Cole; it's the first season of House of the Dragon, and it's officially in the can. We hope you've been enjoying following along the season with us and want to send our listeners off with some entertaining discussion about the last 10 weeks of Westerosi TV. Tune in to hear talk about topics such as: best/worst character, best dragon, best/worst prop, worst relationship, and best episode. Thank you all for listening and know that even though we're going on hiatus for now, The Mummer's Farce shall return!

Episode 60 - Greg Yaitanes - HotD 110

It's season finale time and the storm has really picked up now so pull up a seat at the Mummer's Farce's painted table and help us guess what the different props mean. In this episode, we see Rhaenyra's side of things as a companion piece to Alicent's last episode, and how through a series of unhappy accidents, the spark of war is lit. Daemon serenades a gnarly dragon underground, Rhaenyra is crowned high above, and for most of this episode Rhaenys stays someplace in between. Plus, a friendly reminder to keep your pets leashed at all times while flying around Storm's End.

Episode 59 - Clare Kilner - HotD 109

It's the penultimate episode of House of the Dragon, so it's time to meet a new set of twins! E-boy and A-boy aside, there is also some great tension in this episode as the Greens move to fill the power vacuum with their own ascendency. I know this show has been renewed for another season, but here it seems like Rhaenys kinda made that call, for good or ill. Elsewhere, Alicent gives her father a talking to, Criston Cole sinks one into the corner pocket, probably Mysaria's house maybe burns down but probably she's not in there because maybe she's smarter than that but probably the show should have written her better earlier in the episode if they didn't want this straightforward plot point to be so confused.

Episode 58 - Geeta Vasant Patel - HotD 108

It's time to don your golden half masks and tune in to another episode of The Mummer's Farce! This week Kate and Dan talk about bad CGI tongues, sappy dinner conversation, and whether any of these characters actually want the throne they all seem so determined to acquire. At least the new Aemond casting seems fun, even if he seems to be the portrait Criston Cole is keeping in his attic. Also have you heard about this dagger? Hoo boy, what a dagger it is!

Episode 57 - Miguel Sapochnik - HotD 107

The plot thickens as the blood thins (much to Vaemond's dismay) in the latest episode of House of the Dragon. Aemond claims a dragon but still gets beat up by a bunch of babies, Alicent begins to unfurl, and Rhaenyra faces that darn dagger once again. After so much action, I feel like I need to make like a member of the royal family and "go to bed," but not before taking in the latest episode of The Mummer's Farce!

01:03:56

Episode 56 - Miguel Sapochnik - HotD 106

With all this talk about a time skip, you'd think we were watching science fiction instead of fantasy. Anyway, everyone is suddenly 10 years older and the split between Rhaenyra and Alicent has only widened. There are long takes, big swings, and a huge old dragon with perhaps the most touching moment in the whole episode. Plus there's a whole new meaning to the phrase "meet the beetles." Join us as Kate and Dan unpack this "mid-season premiere." Note: Due to technical difficulties during recording, we are missing a few minutes in the middle of the show, and after the break, audio was pulled from backup recording devices, so you may notice a difference in quality.

Episode 55 - Clare Kilner - HotD 105

The tides subside and the dragons dance in this episode of House of the Dragon in what is decidedly a turn in the right direction as far as Kate and Dan are concerned. Join us for this royal wedding episode as we count the rats against the number of time Viserys gets totally owned and see who's the winner winner disgusting looking chicken dinner.

Episode 54 - Clare Kilner - HotD 104

Who did what now with who? Why? Is that what Miguel said? Are you sure? I thought Rhaenyra said something different. Oh look, Ser Breakbones is here. And now he's gone! Oof, listen, I don't know what Ryan Condal told you was going on, but Kate and Dan are going to try their best to make sense of it...after they check out these tapestries :P

09-18
01:09:20

Episode 53 - Greg Yaitanes - HotD 103

The Targs take the worlds drabbest Vengabus out to the woods for a birthday party, and everyone has exactly one question: y'all see that blue guy? Kidding aside, it's nice they gave Rhaenyra something to do this episode. Elsewhere, (sigh) Crabfeeder gets pinched and Daemon gives the audience the silent treatment. Join Kate and Dan across yet another time skip as they recount the ways in which the prop department has gone hog wild once again.

Episode 52 - Greg Yaitanes - HotD 102

This week HotD talks the talk, but can it walk the walk? And is all Sorkin-like behavior confined to the castle gardens? Not that we're complaining. There is a lot of dry chatter and silly props this episode, but at least your favorite Game of Thrones podcast does get a name drop. About time, George! Also Kate and Dan begin their watch for the appearance of one, Elmo Tully. Did he show up this week? Tune in to find out!

Episode 51 - Miguel Sapochnik - HotD 101

The inaugural episode of House of the Dragon has arrived and it's a doozy. Kate and Dan convene to talk about Targs Targing in all the ways one could Targ. Have the shows producers really taken lessons from Game of Thrones to heart, or are they doomed to repeat their past mistakes? Listen in to find out, but only after placing your large marble on the table. If we all do it at once, maybe a secret door in Viserys' model train set will open!

Episode 50 - House of the Dragon Pregame

They said it couldn't be done, but the Mummer's Farce has returned after 3+ years in the Shadow Lands beyond Asshai. The reason: more Game of Thrones! With the imminent launch of the prequel series House of the Dragon, Kate and Dan take occasion to dust off the mics, dig into some tomes, and ponder just how long HBO's parent company is going to let them get away with this. Join us, won't you, as we find out.

Game of Thrones has ended, but what will the show's legacy be? Kate and Dan take one final lap around season 8, ranking the episodes, picking apart the most welcome and unwelcome surprises and reflecting on the documentary The Last Watch. Episode 48 - David Benioff & D.B. Weiss - GoT 806

This is it, folks, the final episode ever of Game of Thrones! Time to go out in style with the help of your friends at The Mummer's Farce. Does the show justify Dany's actions last episode? Do characters settle into tidy little conclusions? Will Drogon remain in the area?! Well, I'm not going to spoil it all in this description! Listen in to see what Kate and Dan think of just how bittersweet of an ending we got.

Episode 47 - Miguel Sapochnik - GoT 805

Game of Thrones barrels toward its conclusion, but not before burning half of King's Landing and seemingly quite a bit of audience goodwill. Kate and Dan take on the fiery downward spiral and the oh-so-controversial heel turn. But it's not all death-from-above and apocalypse. Arya and The Hound share a lovely moment before, hmm, ok bad example. Jaime finally reunites with Cersei and, um, er, OK, that one's kinda similar. Well, what if I told you Harry Strickland is there...for a minute. OK, it's mostly death-from-above and apocalypse, I guess.

Episode 46 - David Nutter - GoT 804

The final battle is over and also somehow the final battle is just beginning in the latest episode of Game of Thrones. Join Kate and Dan this week as they cut Dany some slack that no one else seems to be granting her, Bronn, of all people, makes some salient points about how the world works, and Jon contests whether Targs always gonna Targ. All that plus new evidence surfaces about Vary's secret merman identity, so don't miss it!

Episode 45 - Miguel Sapochnik - GoT 803

Feeling a bit tense after watching "The Long Night" episode of Game of Thrones? Take a moment (or 90 minutes) to unwind with Kate and Dan as they walk through the darkness and emerge with keen insights about the significance behind what just happened. Do Arya and Beric have some kind of Lady Stoneheart connection? What does this mean for Melisandre's premonitions about either Dany or Jon being Azor Ahai? Where exactly was Mr. Royce this whole time? All that and more in this blockbuster episode of The Mummer's Farce!

Episode 44 - David Nutter - GoT 802

Cozy up by the fire (or with your favorite blacksmith) one last time before it's too late as The Mummer's Farce checks in on our favorite characters as they prepare to face off against the White Walkers. Sansa and Dany have a fashion battle, Jaime reunites with almost everyone, and the show finally remembers how to write for Tyrion. That plus, y'know, all the feels.

04-26

Episode 43 - David Nutter - GoT 801

The final season of Game of Thrones is here at long last, and the premiere gives Kate and Dan plenty to talk about. Come along and listen as our hosts count Dany's smirks, guess how many other characters will get Meera Reeded, and wonder what Cersei was thinking with Euron (other than elephants). Let The Mummer's Farce be your flaming sword in the darkness, but pray we last longer than Beric probably will.
