When a narcissist flips the question back on you, a simple conversation can suddenly turn into you defending yourself. In this episode of the Narc Free Man Podcast, Philip Dugas explains narcissist deflection, question flipping, blame shifting, and how to respond without getting pulled into another circular argument. If you've ever asked a narcissistic or high-conflict partner a direct question only to hear, "Why are you so controlling?" "You're too sensitive," or "What about what YOU did?" — this episode will help you recognize what may be happening. You'll learn how question flipping can shift the conversation away from accountability and put you on the defensive. Philip breaks down five common deflection tactics, including counter-accusations, character attacks, history dumping, victim reversal, and questioning your motives. More importantly, you'll learn practical ways to respond. Instead of explaining, defending, arguing, and repeating yourself, you'll learn a simple framework: ASK → REDIRECT → DISENGAGE. This episode also covers why trying to build the "perfect case" may not create accountability, how to stay grounded when conversations become confusing, when it may be time to end an unproductive conversation, and what healthy accountability actually sounds like. When you finally stand up to a female narcissist, things often get worse before they get better. Here is how to hold your ground. Dealing with narcissistic disrespect requires a strategy, not just a reaction. When you stop playing along with toxic relationship patterns, you will face immediate pushback. This is a predictable response when you stop allowing someone to treat you with contempt, and it is the moment most men fold and return to the status quo. In this conversation, I share five specific phrases designed to help you stop the cycle. You will learn the roadmap of what to expect when you start setting boundaries, and why you must stop needing her approval or agreement to protect your peace. Whether you are dealing with a difficult partner or a narcissistic wife, the goal is to change your response so you are no longer a target. What do men in toxic or narcissistic relationships actually need to move forward? I asked 20+ men in my community who are navigating toxic relationships, narcissistic relationship patterns, high-conflict marriages, separation, divorce, and co-parenting what kind of support they need most. Their answers were remarkably consistent: clarity, stronger boundaries, better communication, practical action steps, community, and a plan for what comes next. In this episode, we talk about the gap between understanding toxic or narcissistic behavior and knowing what to actually do about it in your own life. Because learning about gaslighting, blame-shifting, silent treatment, breadcrumbing, and narcissistic behaviors can help you recognize unhealthy patterns—but eventually the question has to shift from: "Why does she do this?" to: "What am I going to do with my life now?" We discuss what men may need during three different stages: Clarity: You're still in the relationship and trying to understand what's happening. Is this a struggling marriage, a toxic relationship, narcissistic behavior, or are there things you need to take responsibility for too? Navigation: You're separated, divorcing, co-parenting, or dealing with high-conflict communication and need to respond more intentionally instead of getting pulled into the same arguments. Rebuilding: The relationship may be over, but you're working to rebuild your confidence, self-trust, boundaries, health, relationships, fatherhood, purpose, and peace. I also introduce The Inner Circle, a private 90-day coaching experience I'm building for men navigating toxic, narcissistic, or high-conflict relationships. The goal isn't to spend another 90 days studying your wife or ex. It's to get clearer about what you can control, strengthen your communication and boundaries, rebuild trust in yourself, and determine your next move. Important: The Inner Circle is coaching, not therapy, mental health treatment, marriage counseling, or legal advice. I am not a licensed therapist and do not diagnose individuals with narcissistic personality disorder.
Are you constantly questioning what you remember, apologizing just to end an argument, or wondering if you're actually the problem? In this episode of The Narc-Free Man Podcast, Philip Dugas breaks down 12 common gaslighting phrases that can make you doubt your memory, feelings, and judgment—and explains what you can say instead of getting trapped in another circular argument. You'll hear phrases like: "That never happened." "I never said that." "You're remembering it wrong." "You're too sensitive." "You're overreacting." "It was just a joke." "You're crazy." "Everyone agrees with me." "You always twist my words." "Look what you made me do." "After everything I've done for you?" "You're the one with the problem." Philip explains what each phrase may be doing inside a repeated pattern of gaslighting, why responsible men can become vulnerable to constantly second-guessing themselves, and how to stop handing over your trust in your own memory and judgment. You'll also learn practical ways to respond to gaslighting without getting dragged into an argument about your reality, plus four steps that can help you start getting clear about what's actually happening in your relationship. One disagreement, forgotten conversation, or defensive moment doesn't automatically make someone a gaslighter. The key is the pattern—especially when the conversations repeatedly end with you being wrong, apologizing, confused, or questioning yourself. If you've started rehearsing conversations before having them, checking her mood when you walk through the door, saving screenshots to prove what happened, walking on eggshells, or wondering whether you're actually the narcissist, this episode is for you. 📞 NEED CLARITY ABOUT YOUR RELATIONSHIP? That decision is yours. The goal is to help you see your situation more clearly so you can make that decision for yourself.
