Each February, we celebrate National African American/ Black History month. Listen to our latest “The Stories We Weave” episode where we interview Krystal King; an NUSD parent; and her daughter Lena; a student of Inderkum High School. 
The mother and daughter share the importance of quality family time, how they came to be a part of the Natomas community, and the importance of food and song during family celebrations.

During National Unhoused Youth Awareness Month, we would like to highlight some of the intentional resources we offer families and students experiencing homelessness. In this “Conversations with NUSD” podcast, Shayla Allen (NUSD’s Social Worker Liaison), gives some examples of our efforts to remove barriers for our unhoused families and students, and our foster students. Members of Inderkum High School’s Sikh Honors and Service Society talk about their culture in this episode. Students Sharnjeet and Suhana, along with Mandeep Singh, of the Jakarta Movement; share the values they hold, the importance of gurdwaras, and helping out communities in need. 
Jennifer Rustin; an NUSD staff member, parent, and a member of the White River Apaches of Arizona; and her daughter Nevaeh; a student of Leroy Greene Academy celebrate their culture in this episode. Rustin shares the importance of sharing her culture with her family by making regular visits to Arizona, participating in cultural traditions such as a “Sunrise Dance,” which is a coming-of-age celebration for a young woman.
Happy Filipino American History Month! One of the ways we are celebrating is by sharing the Farinias family story. Watch or listen to the podcast. Joseph Farinias' grandpa served in the U.S. Army's 1st Filipino Infantry Regiment during World War II, and he shares that story and more with his two children, Mila and Joseph (Witter Ranch Elementary students).

Equal parts hard work and love for your craft, that's the secret to covering the Olympics in Paris, according to Duke Henderson and Luke Galindo. Before the Olympics, the two learned the basics of broadcast journalism thanks to the CTE Broadcast Media course at Inderkum High School.

Paths to success are not always linear, for Markus Benjamin, the interim counselor at Natomas Middle, his journey was a more than 23 years long process. Benjamin was an NUSD warehouse specialist before joining the Natomas Middle School team. He explains how he balances work and life, stemming from his start with the Sacramento Job Corps, being a small business owner, a husband and father, an NUSD employee, and a Diverse Future Teachers participant. Joey's Food Locker is our district's food pantry at Natomas High School that offers free food to families in need.  Osvaldo Ortiz, a Community Resource Specialist with NUSD, chats with us about how the community can continue to help families in need by donating money, shelf-stable food, and their time to help distribute bags and translate. 
Joey's Food Locker was first established in 2015 and is dedicated to the memory of Joel Michael Schwieger Jr., son of NUSD's Adult Transitions Program teacher, Joel Schwieger.

Writing was always a creative outlet for Helen Ketteman and one day, over a meal of Mexican gorditas, she thought of a story idea that would feature a brave gordita on a wild adventure, akin to the fairytale classic, the Gingerbread Boy.

In this podcast we highlight Sacramento-area author Lori Nakamura's book, Pamilya, or family in English. This episode is in support of our Core Value of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, as our district celebrates Filipino American History Month.
The book is illustrated by her sister and Inderkum High School graduate, Leah Abucayan. In the story a boy details his family, school, and social life in a Filipino American household. Nakamura says people of all backgrounds can enjoy the book because at the heart of her message, is that we all face similar feelings, albeit as part of different situations.
