College hockey time! Wisconsin and Ohio St met for the 3rd year in a row for the Women's National Title. Despite the familiarity, it did not disapoint as Wisconsin came back in the final 19 seconds to tie the game up on a controversial penalty shot, then win the game in overtime! Then, the men's bracket was determined on Sunday. Adam and Zach go through each of the four regions. Which is the strongest? Which one is the weakest? Where are we most likely to see an upset? Who might be getting ready for a push?In this week's edition of Contender or Pretender the guys looked at the Edmonton Oilers. Lots of news in the hockey world this week! Florida visited the White House to celebrate it's Stanley Cup title. We're a week away from the 4 Nations Tournmanet. Which country will win? Johnathan Quick got his 400th career victory last week. And the Utah Hockey Club was denied it's attempt to brand themselves Yeti. Adam and Zach discuss all that plus more on this week's episode. In what was one of the biggest trades in NHL history, Carolina, Colorado, and Chicago combined to send Mikko Rantanen and Taylor Hall to the Hurricanes, Jack Drury, Marin Necas, and a pair of draft picks to the Avalanche, and a draft pick to Chicago. Adam breaks down the trade as well as grades each team for how they came out. He also breaks down what the rest of the season could look like for Carolina and Colorado and tries to guess what move could be next. Connor McDavid got handed out a 3-game suspension for a cross check on Conor Garland over the weekend. Was this the right move or too harsh by the NHL? And the timing couldn't be worse as the Washington Capitals are coming into town. We also had goalie madness this week as Alex Nedeljkovic had the greatest offensive game for a goalie in NHL history with a goal and and assist against the Sabers. He also logged 40 saves, too, for good measure. Meanwhile, in the ECHL we had a goalie fight down in Kansas City!Ricky K of New York State of Sports joined the guys in the 2nd half of the show to discuss the New York Sirens of the PWHL and talk PWHL at large. The guys then also brought New York's NHL squads to try and figure out what has gone wrong this season. Adam and Zach break down the latest in a wild week of hockey. The Red Wings lost to San Jose to end what was the longest winning streak in the NHL at 7 games. Still, it's been an impressive several weeks in Detroit, which has Zach gushing. On the stranger side, what in the world was Bruce Boudreau doing with a beer league team? The PWHL is talking expansion - where should they be looking? And as Ovechkin gets closer to over taking Gretzky, there is one person in the NHL that is able to give a unique perspective on both scoring greats. Adam and Zach celebrated the US winning gold at the World Juniors in Canada. An impressive 4-3 overtime victory over Finland. Nice job to come from behind and get the win. The guys also offer up some, hopefully obvious, solutions for fixing the World Classic so that the thud that was this year's offering doesn't happen again. Zach also gives some stories out of his notebook. Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-neutral-zone--5772909/support.
It's been a crazy World Juniors so far. Latvia made it to the quarter finals for just the 2nd time ever! The US is one step closer to repeating as champions. Canada might now make it to the semi finals?!Meanwhile, in the NHL, Zach and Adam go over the 12 games running tonight as well as look back on the Winter Class from Tuesday night. Does it deserve to be anywhere other than the bottom of the list of 16 World Classics? Finally, Zach has quite a few college hockey updates. Welcome back! After a couple of weeks off due to Thanksgiving, Adam is back at it to get us caught up on the hockey world! The Avalanche should be capable of a deep playoff run this year, but their goaltending was not up to snuff. You don't often see starting goalies get traded before January but this Colorado team isn't normal. Not one, but two new goalies are now with the Avs. Will that be the difference going forward? Meanwhile, in the Big Apple, the Rangers are starting to fall apart at the seams, having gotten just 4 points in their last 10 games. They finally moved Jacob Trouba, who had some not flattering things to say on his way out, but will they be able to get some wins? Finally, some good news on the health of the sport and the league from Gary Bettman today out of the Board of Govenor's meeting. Big news Tuesday in the NHL as Alexander Ovechkin got closer to Wane Gretzky only to get his knee taken out Monday night. What's the latest for The Great 8? After a slow start to the season, Boston decided to move on from Coach Jim Montgomery and hand the reigns over to Interim Head Coach Joe Sacco. Then, the PWHL returns! All 6 teams now have nicknames and logos for the season, Adam gives his opinions on how the teams did on each of those. He also gives a brief run down of each team to get you ready for the regular season opener on Saturday, November 30thBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-neutral-zone--5772909/support.
The Jets are off to one of the best starts in NHL history! With their 6-3 win over the New York Rangers Tuesday night, Winnipeg is the fastest team to 15 wins ever! Adam and Zach go through what has made Winnipeg tick, from Connor Hellbuyck in net to the hottest offense in the leage. Can this be sustained? With Zach off for the night, Adam gets us caught up on the scores around the NHL plus the return of #1 overall pick Macklin Celebrini to the San Jose Sharks. Just in time, too, as the Sharks have started to win a few games! Then, we go back to school to check in on the NCAA hockey scene. Adam gets us caught up on the latest injury news to Edmonton star Connor McDavid. Spoiler alert: it's not comforting. On the lighter side of things, the San Jose Sharks finally won a game! However the Winnipeg Jets fell from the unbeaten ranks. Zach then joined in to give some updates on neck protection across hockey on the 1 year anniversary of Adam Johnson's tragic accident as well as a reunion in Tampa Bay.
