Description
Hosted by Suzanne Culberg (aka the Velvet Hammer), this is the show for recovering people-pleasers who are done putting themselves last.
You’ll learn how to put yourself first without the guilt, set boundaries that actually stick, and reclaim the unapologetic badass you buried under everyone else’s expectations.
No fluff. No filters. No overproduced nonsense.
Just one take, real talk, and the occasional F-bomb, because life’s too short for self-abandonment.
If you’re tired of living in stressed-depressed-lemon-zest mode and craving some easy-peasy-lemon-squeezy perspective shifts, tune in.
Each episode is a permission slip wrapped in real talk and delivered with sass.

Ever feel like business is just one long game of “try this, ditch that, oh hell no not again”? In this episode, I share the very real highs and lows of experimenting with new platforms, specifically my fresh leap into Skool (yep, spelled S-K-O-O-L). I talk about: The difference between busywork and needle-moving work. Why I left Facebook groups (and why I missed them). What Skool feels like compared to the “old Facebook days.” How I’m using theme days like Messy Monday and F*ck Yeah Friday to spark real conversation. The gamification element, from Silent Supporter to Nope Ninja, and why prizes make it fun. The deeper invitation: stop people-pleasing, stop performing, and start being unapologetically YOU! Whether you’re curious about Skool, craving connection, or just need permission to step into your own Done Era, this episode will give you both laughs and a nudge to do things your way. After nearly 500 episodes, my podcast almost broke me. What started as pure joy, 100 episodes in 100 days, no rules, no pressure, slowly turned into a slog under the weight of “expert” advice. Thumbnails, guests, episode lengths, SEO, every new rule was another brick in my backpack. In this episode, I share how I nearly quit, what finally snapped me out of it, and why I’m choosing my own destiny from here on out. No more outsourcing my intuition. No more performing for approval. Just me, my mic, and a whole lot of Done Era energy. If you’ve got a project that once lit you up but now feels heavy, maybe you’re not broken. Maybe the rules you’ve been trying to follow were never meant for you. What you’ll hear in this episode: The moment my podcast stopped feeling like mine. Why well-meaning (and not-so-well-meaning) advice can steal your spark. How outsourcing your intuition dilutes your joy. What “choose your own destiny” energy looks like in practice. An invitation to reclaim the creative thing you thought you’d lost. Today I’m joined by Carrie Bradley to talk codependence, emotional labour, money confidence, and the spicy question most people avoid: What do you actually want? We cover why honesty is the ultimate gift, why small daily actions beat dramatic life overhauls, and how to stop being the exploding doormat. Also featuring: mumcations, perfume trauma, and a lazy-river house plan that would make a billionaire blush. In this episode, we discuss What “codependence” really looks like in everyday relationships, not just textbooks. Emotional labour as an invisible job and how to stop doing two jobs for the price of none. The finance split: building confidence so you can stand on your own two feet. The guilt signal: spotting “should” energy vs genuine desire. Integrity, self-trust, and why honesty saves relationships. Fantasy as a tool for dreaming bigger in life, love, money, and work. Why tiny consistent actions will do more for your future than one heroic leap. Today I sit down with Nicole Adey for a raw and honest chat about energy as life currency, burnout, and why quitting your job (or moving house) doesn’t magically refill your tank. Nicole shares her Energy Allocation Audit, a simple but powerful way to see how much of your daily juice is being siphoned off by the past, drained by the future, and actually left for right now. We talk boundaries, self-worth, low-hanging fruit, and why canceling plans might be the healthiest thing you do this week. In this episode, we discuss: Why energy is the currency most people ignore until it’s gone. How trauma and unprocessed grief sneak into your “battery life.” The “today problem” filter to cut rumination in its tracks. Why it’s not selfish to put yourself first, it’s survival. Boundaries, burnout, and what it really takes to thrive. In this episode I sit down with Karen Gray, aka The Confidence Coder, to dive deep into what confidence really is (and what it absolutely isn’t). We talk about why two people can go through the same experience and walk away with completely different takeaways, how trauma sneaks into our conditioning, and why you’re probably still living life with a metaphorical flat tire. Karen shares her four-part process - Remember, Rewire, Reclaim, Recalibrate - and we unpack how to stop bending yourself into a pretzel just to be palatable for other people. Spoiler: confidence isn’t something you “earn” once and keep forever, it’s a choice you come back to again and again. If you’ve ever caught yourself waiting to “earn” a nap, softening your “no” into a “maybe later,” or questioning if you’re even allowed to feel how you feel, this conversation will hit home. Consider this your reminder that you don’t need to shrink, twist, or hustle for permission. You were born worthy. Full stop. In this episode we discuss: Why confidence is less about “having it all together” and more about remembering who you are. Why pretending you’ll “try” is usually code for “never.” What toddlers can teach us about unfiltered self-worth. The sneaky ways we abandon ourselves to keep the peace. Why you don’t have to “earn” rest, joy, or your own damn opinion. Words can carry more baggage than we realise. In this lively conversation, Suzanne is joined once again by Lynn Quinn to unpack the idea of “word allergies” those overused, loaded, or ambiguous words that make you cringe the second you hear them. They explore: What a word allergy actually is (and why it’s deeply personal). Why some words (like “gratitude,” “budget,” “expert,” or “trigger”) hit us like nails on a chalkboard. How cultural differences and context can turn an innocent word into a communication disaster. The subtle ways we say one thing but mean another — apples, oranges, and bananas included. How to swap out allergic words for ones that feel clearer, kinder, or more resonant. From “busy mums” to “funnels,” “detox” to “woo-woo,” Suzanne and Lynn share their own allergy lists, hilarious miscommunications, and practical tips for finding words that actually land. If you’ve ever shuddered at corporate jargon, spiritual fluff, or marketing clichés, this episode will make you feel seen (and probably make you laugh out loud). In this episode, I dive into the concept of the “Empty Elevator,” a metaphor I first came across in Martha Beck’s Steering by Starlight. Here’s the truth: sometimes our relationships, friendships, and connections reach their natural end. The season has passed, but we cling on out of fear. Fear of being alone, fear of letting someone down, or fear of what comes next. I share how the elevator metaphor helps us see that in order to welcome new people, opportunities, and connections into our lives, we need to make space by letting others off. That pause in between, the ride to the next floor, can feel lonely, but it’s also the fertile in-between space where growth happens. I also talk about: The difference between “reason, season, and lifetime” relationships. Why social media has made clean endings messier (and sometimes more painful). How releasing what’s no longer serving you creates space for aligned people to arrive. The surprising way old friends can circle back when the timing’s right. If you’re in the messy middle of shifting friendships or feeling the sting of letting go, this episode is a reminder that you’re just between floors and the doors will open again. In this episode I sit down with therapist Mary Rothwell to dive into one of those topics people love to throw around but rarely understand: sociopaths. Mary shares a raw personal story about what it was like to work under a boss who ticked all the “something’s not right here” boxes, and how that experience completely changed the course of her life and work. We talk about gut instincts, red flags we ignore, why we second-guess ourselves, and the difference between genuine curiosity and gaslighting disguised as “concern.” This isn’t a dry clinical conversation about labels. It’s two women getting real about human behavior, what it feels like when someone’s chipping away at your confidence, and how to stand your ground without needing anyone else’s approval. We also explore how nature models boundaries better than most humans do, why it’s ok to walk away from relationships that don’t work, and the magic of asking “what else could be true?” before you spiral into self-doubt. If you’ve ever had a “danger Will Robinson” gut feeling about someone but convinced yourself to ignore it, this episode is for you. In this episode we discuss: Why slapping labels like “sociopath” or “narcissist” can be more harmful than helpful. Mary’s up-close experience working under a boss who undermined her at every turn. How to trust your gut when someone “looks perfect on paper” but feels off. Why “being nice” often backfires and what nature can teach us about boundaries. The power of asking “what else could be true?” before spiraling into self-doubt. How to stop shrinking to fit other people’s comfort zones and stand unapologetically in your own. In this I sit down with death doula Helen Gretchen Jones for a conversation that’s not really about dying, it’s about living with boundaries, honesty, and connection right until the very end. Helen shares what a death doula actually does, how she helps people and their families navigate those last moments, and why receiving care is not a sign of weakness. We talk about the power of saying what needs to be said before it’s too late, the surprising role of hospice, and how our culture has distanced itself from death and why that might not be serving us. We also dive into closure, spiritual experiences at the bedside, and the parallels between birth and death support. Whether you’re caring for someone now, have walked that path before, or just want to be more prepared for the realities we’ll all face, this episode is equal parts heart, practicality, and permission to not do it all alone. What we cover: What a death doula is (and isn’t). Why advocacy matters at the end of life. How to navigate feelings of being a “burden.” Hospice myths and what they actually provide. Spiritual and emotional experiences at the bedside. The importance of saying what needs to be said while you still can. This week I’m joined once again by the delightful Elizabeth Bruckner – acupuncturist, author of The Homesteader Mindset, and full-blown fermentation fanatic – and we go deep into what homesteading really means in the modern world (spoiler: it’s not all raccoon hats and rifle-wielding). We talk about: The two very different types of homesteaders (spoiler: one owns a pitchfork, the other a Pinterest account). Why modern homesteading is less about making your own bread and more about making peace with your own choices. Pattern recognition, intuitive living, and why your brain might know your cream has turned before your nose does. How Elizabeth channels her inner Merl and exits parties early (with zero guilt and a whole lot of grace). Why saying “no” doesn’t need a sob story or a spreadsheet. We also get into why community matters, why fear-based motivation is a trap, and how to start doing things your own damn waym - even if your kid’s teacher side-eyes your plastic wrap. Whether you're sourdough-curious, dreaming of chickens, or just tired of pretending you’re not done with small talk and birthday parties, this one’s for you. In this episode, I’m joined by Jessica Martin to explore neurohacking for boundaries which sounds super techy, but don’t worry, we break it down into real-life, relatable magic. If you've ever struggled to actually uphold the boundaries you set this one's for you. Jessica walks us through her “triangle method” to rewire our brains and stop letting old patterns win. We talk about setting boundaries with others and with ourselves (like not doom-scrolling before sunrise), why rewards matter more than we think, and how to start small instead of waiting for a perfect Monday. This is about ditching the shame spiral, picking one doable shift, and reinforcing it with dopamine. Whether it’s finally asking people to text before dropping by, or reclaiming your mornings from social media chaos, you’ll leave this convo with practical steps and permission to evolve. In this episode, we discuss: How your brain processes boundaries, habits, and resistance. Why boundaries often fail and how to make them stick. Boundaries with others vs. boundaries with yourself. Why “just this once” turns into a lifetime of resentment. Why upholding boundaries isn’t selfish, it’s self-respecting. This episode is a deep, delicious dive with Inna Segal – internationally renowned intuitive, author, and truth-teller – and we’re not here for small talk. We talk burnout, people-pleasing, and the addictive high of being constantly needed (and clapped for). Inna shares vulnerably about her own journey, including a powerful personal story about choosing self-honour over approval – even when it gets awkward. We explore why comfort often leads to stagnation, how intuitive growth requires uncomfortable honesty, and why feeling fulfilled beats chasing happy. Inna talks candidly about her past relationships, the spiritual lessons that emerged from pain, and the importance of reclaiming your voice and creating emotional safety. Whether you’re on the edge of a rage-quit moment or simply tired of spiritual fluff, this conversation will remind you that you’re not broken – you’re just ready to live with more depth, truth, and alignment. Topics We Cover: What burnout really looks like and why slowing down feels so confronting. Why we self-sabotage just as we're about to shift. The quiet power of doing less, not more. Boundaries that actually protect your energy. Navigating relationships with people who “don’t get it.” Why spiritual work isn’t fast food (and never should be). How unresolved trauma shows up in the body. Why fulfilment matters more than happiness. Ever hit that weird, confusing place where you've “done all the things” - the career, the house, the yoga, the self-help books - and still feel like something’s missing? You’re not alone. In this episode, I’m joined by Cheryl Stelte and we dive into what’s really going on when everything looks great on paper but feels deeply unsatisfying. We talk about: Why fulfillment isn’t about ticking boxes. What inner work actually is (hint: not just journaling and lighting candles). How stuck energy and unprocessed emotions show up in your body, business, and relationships. Why your latest binge-watch might be avoidance in disguise. The truth about energetic shifts (and how they impact the people around you—without saying a word). The power of pausing to ask: “What am I avoiding feeling?” Cheryl shares her own story of leaving behind the picture-perfect life (including a house on the ocean!) to find something deeper and how doing the inner work transformed everything, including her business and relationships. If you're feeling blocked, stuck, or on the verge of burning it all down, this conversation might be your signpost. My new website is live! It’s the most "me" thing on the internet. Check it out here: http://suzanneculberg.com Today I’m saying something that most creators don’t say out loud: I’m kinda bored with this podcast. Not with you (you’re amazing) but with how I’ve been doing it. The structure, the format, the “shoulds.” It’s starting to feel like obligation instead of inspiration. So instead of pretending everything’s fine, I’m naming it. In this episode, I share: Why the current vibe isn’t vibing. How my business (and energy) have shifted. What’s still coming (spoiler: I’ve got 5 more episodes already recorded). The big question I’m asking you 'What do you actually want from this show? You can let me know here: https://www.suzanneculberg.com/contact/ This isn’t the end. But it is a pause, a pivot, or maybe a whole new chapter. Either way, I’m taking you with me if you’re game.
In this episode, I sit down with Catrina Mitchum to unpack why so many online courses are all hype and no help. We get fired up about everything from refund runarounds to overpriced video vaults, and why just spewing content at people doesn’t mean they’re going to learn anything (or come back for more). We cover: What actually makes a course good. Why many course creators unknowingly mimic bad teaching. The dark side of “bonus bloat” and fake value stacking. Why most “how to build a course” courses are 💩. How to design a learning journey with real outcomes. Tips for beta-testing without burning yourself ou.t And why it's always okay to say no to making a workbook! Today I’m joined by the brilliant Ruth Ridgeway - a woman after my own heart who isn’t here to perform, polish or pretend. We dive deep into business experiments, behind-the-scenes truth bombs, and why sharing the messy middle matters just as much (if not more) than the shiny end result. We talk about: How our friendship started with a bullet-pointed testimonial and a Voxer chat. Ruth’s philosophy of business-as-experiment, and why that mindset is a game-changer for overthinkers. The power of documenting and selling your process before it’s “finished.” Honest conversations about launching, flopping, pivoting and still showing up. Why most freebies are overrated (and what works better for email signups). Affiliate marketing done ethically, and why we’re not afraid to recommend what we love. The myth of overnight success and why slow, steady growth matters. Letting go of podcasting (gasp!) and honouring your bandwidth. This one is for the creatives, the overthinkers, and the business owners who are tired of pretending it’s all perfect. If you’ve ever felt like the back of your “cross stitch” is too messy to show anyone, this episode is your permission slip to share it anyway. ✨ Ruth makes stuff. She shares it online. Sometimes it’s a course, sometimes it’s a behind-the-scenes diary, sometimes it’s an experiment in real time. It’s always real. Always useful. And never sugar-coated. 🔗 Links mentioned: Ruth Ridgeway’s Website Suzanne’s “No” Workshop Pivot experiment + 100K experiment + Up Your Affiliate Game (Ruth’s experiments that we chat about) Love this ep? In this episode, I’m diving into something I know all too well: letting it be awkward. People are often surprised when I say I’m socially awkward, but if you’ve met me in person, you get it, and honestly? Awkward is underrated. From striking up a conversation with a fellow cheer mum (who’s now my competition-day buddy) to pitching my own thesis project at uni when everyone else just followed the crowd, none of that magic would’ve happened if I’d waited to be polished and perfect. I just said the thing. Even if it came out clunky or weird. Today I’m inviting you to stop hiding behind the scenes and start letting your awkward self out. Whether it's complimenting someone in line at the shops or finally starting the thing you've been putting off, there is real power in showing up exactly as you are. If you're ready to stop overthinking and start doing, come join me for Mighty 90 LIVE, kicking off July 1. It’s practical magic for real goals like launching your podcast, writing that book, or just getting stuff done. This is not mega yachts and white bikinis. It's honest, grounded action with support from me, daily prompts, and Voxer check-ins over 90 days. Let it be awkward. Let it be messy. Let it be yours. Inside this episode: Why awkwardness is actually a superpower How I made a new mum friend with the world’s weirdest icebreaker The story of how I created my own thesis project at uni Why perfection is the ultimate stall tactic What Mighty 90 is and how to get in on the live round Links & Mentions: Grab the $9 Mighty 90 self-paced course Join Mighty 90 LIVE (starting July 1) Sign up for my socially awkward but very real newsletter Let your freak flag fly. Thinking about getting paid to speakm but not sure where to start? Or sick of being told to “just speak for exposure”? In this episode, I chat with Jenn Espinosa-Goswami about the power of paid public speaking and we’re not talking about pinkwashed pitch-fests or $20K upsell funnels. We break down: What actually counts as public speaking (spoiler: not paying for a 10-minute slot on someone else’s stage). Red flags to look for before you say yes to a “free opportunity.” How to pitch yourself (without being a schmuck). Why consistency + clarity will land you more gigs. What happens after the mic drops. Plus: I share my own experience as a speaker, host, and podcast gatekeeper, including what makes me say YES and what gets ghosted. Thinking about speaking in your business? Already fallen for a skeezy “visibility” funnel? Want to speak but not sure where to start? This one’s for you. Tired of networking events that feel like one big awkward sales pitch? In this episode, I'm joined by Laura Gates Lupton for a real (and hilarious) behind-the-scenes look at how we created Networking Without the Schmooze an online event made especially for introverts, highly sensitive humans, and people who’d rather fake a power outage than give an elevator pitch. We talk about: Why traditional networking feels like Gollum trying to make small talk. The magic of prompts (and why they’re not just “tell us what you do”). What really happens inside their monthly events (hint: no pitch slapping). How showing up as your full, unfiltered self can lead to the best connections. The power of brainstorming breakout rooms and permission to just be honest. Whether you’re new to business, pivoting, or just sick of pretending everything’s perfect, this is for you. Register for the next free event and check out the paid tier perks here: https://networkingwithoutschmooze.substack.com/ Real talk. Real people. Zero awkward icebreakers. Come join the party (with or without your wearable blanket).
