In this episode, Julie and Karinda dive deep into the often misunderstood world of Vitamin D. From an in-depth discussion on its history, functions, and the difference between Vitamin D obtained via sunlight versus supplementation, this episode covers it all. They explore emerging research that reveals Vitamin D is more akin to a hormone than a vitamin and discuss the critical roles it plays in our bodies, such as regulating bone health, modulating the immune system, and even its potential anti-cancer benefits. The episode also delves into the importance of natural sunlight exposure, the insufficiency of vitamin D supplementation alone, and the surprising relationship between vitamin D and melatonin. Tune in for a comprehensive exploration that challenges common misconceptions and emphasizes the elegance of natural biochemical processes. ~MENTIONED IN THIS EP:https://www.jforresternaturopath.com.au/blog/vitamin-d-sunshinehttps://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC9066576/https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7692961/https://etymologyworld.com/item/vitaminhttps://youtu.be/wQJlGHVmdrA?si=CaYWb_9sVtqVauWShttps://holisticprimarycare.net/topics/nutrition-a-lifestyle/sulfate-the-most-common-nutritional-deficiency-you-ve-never-heard-of/~TIMESTAMPS00:00 Introduction and Jingle Brainstorming01:22 Welcome and Episode Overview02:27 Debunking Vitamin D Myths03:24 Historical Context of Vitamin D06:25 Vitamin D and Health Misconceptions10:24 The Role of Sunlight in Vitamin D Production17:38 Challenges of Vitamin D Supplementation30:27 Sunlight Exposure and Health Benefits35:39 The Cooling Power of Trees36:47 Vitamin D3 Sulfate and Cholesterol Sulfate40:26 The Role of Melatonin43:16 The Importance of Sunlight and Darkness53:02 Vitamin D's Multifaceted Benefits01:00:27 Historical Insights on Vitamins01:02:17 Closing Thoughts and Listener Engagement~Reach out to the Nuanced Naturopaths here! Karinda and Julie. We’re passionate about finding the nuance in natural health. As degree-qualified naturopaths, we like to ask the questions that need to be asked - about all aspects of health, healing and well-being. We delight in questioning firmly held beliefs and finding the nuance in all subjects health-related and beyond. Sometimes it can get a little technical, but hopefully we explain things in a way that's accessible to anyone interested in natural health, whether you’re a practitioner or someone who wants to learn more and optimise your wellbeing. It’s a chat about poop, periods and everything in between - buckle up for a laugh, a cry and for some things you are yet to consider about your health! Stay nuanced!
Today (recorded in the studio-van!), we explore the common issues faced when oversimplifying complex health problems, particularly in the context of naturopathy (using SIBO and PCOS as some examples!). We discuss how patients often seek simple answers to complex conditions, which can lead to inadequate treatment and persistent health issues. The heart of naturopathy and how WE practice, will always come back to personalised care, addressing root causes, and how sometimes the simplest interventions, like chewing food properly or using a Squatty Potty, can have the greatest impact. We also cover the pitfalls of relying on the internet for health advice and the distinction between protocols and programs/packages.~MENTIONED IN THIS EP:Squatty Potty Ad, and browse their products here (not sponsored!)Ep 11 of The Nuanced Naturopaths on Attachment to DiagnosesThe Plant Path by Sajah & Whitney PophamKarinda's PCOS episode on her podcast, Oh My Menses~TIMESTAMPS00:00 Introduction and New Format01:38 The Problem with Simplifying the Complex02:06 Human Nature and Health Simplification03:40 Issues with Self-Diagnosis and Online Information06:26 Naturopaths and Protocols10:11 Challenges in Treating Conditions Holistically18:31 SIBO Protocols and Their Limitations25:28 Comprehensive Approach to Digestive Health27:24 The Importance of Chewing Your Food29:28 Understanding the Cephalic Digestive System30:57 The Role of Hydrochloric Acid in Digestion31:35 The Connection Between Digestion and SIBO34:28 The Impact of Pancreatic Enzymes and Bile Acids38:36 The Benefits of Using a Pooping Stool41:46 The Value of Simple Health Tips44:23 The Importance of Personalized Health Programs49:53 Conclusion and Final Thoughts~Reach out to the Nuanced Naturopaths here! *NOTE: Huge audio-visual sync issue for most of this episode. Karinda's brain couldn't handle fixing it. Sorry, video watchers! In this light-hearted (but always informative!) episode, acknowledging we're more 'edu-comedy' than strictly education, we dive into the implications of over-supplementation, focusing primarily on vitamin B6 and its side effects, such as peripheral neuropathy. We cover the quality and sources of nutrients in the Australian diet, and the importance of proper supplementation guidance. They also touch on the efficacy and concerns surrounding gummy supplements (you might hate us), frozen vegetables (you might be surprised at our thoughts!), and the role of probiotics. In this episode, we dive into the complexities of discussing taboo health topics like vomit, poop, and body image, thanks to inspiration from a podcast episode of Mushroom Case Daily by ABC, covering the Erin Patterson mushroom case. We reflect on societal judgments around weight loss surgery and the nuances of body image, and bring into focus how avoiding these conversations can lead to untreated chronic health issues. In this episode of the Nuanced Naturopaths, we explore the often misunderstood condition of lipedema. We discuss its symptoms, how it differs from lymphedema (which it's often confused with) and the importance of hormones, especially estrogen, in its development. We highlight the role of chronic inflammation, the unique characteristics of lipedema fat, and how it resists conventional weight loss methods. Plus, we delve into holistic, naturopathic treatments, including diet, herbal remedies, stress management, and the critical role of circadian rhythm (surprise, surprise!) in managing this condition.~MENTIONED IN THIS EP:https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK573066/https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/jpi.12965https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8583809/Lymph Love Club on Instagramhttps://lipedemaproject.org/lipedema-support-community/https://www.facebook.com/groups/1194013721968427/https://www.inspire.com/groups/the-lipedema-project/https://www.reddit.com/r/lipedema/~TIMESTAMPS00:00 Introduction01:17 Meet the Hosts: Karinda and Julie02:41 Episode Topic: Lipedema06:33 Understanding Lipedema: Symptoms and Diagnosis12:09 Comparing Lipedema and Lymphedema21:44 Pathophysiology of Lipedema36:01 Understanding LymphoScintigraphy37:26 Conventional Treatment Strategies for Lymphedema and Lipedema40:29 Complementary Medicine Approaches41:39 Anti-Inflammatory Diet and Nutritional Support45:51 Hormonal Influence on Lipedema55:37 Differences Between Lipedema Fat and Regular Fat01:04:04 Naturopathic Treatment Strategies for Lipedema01:08:51 Circadian Rhythm and Insulin Resistance01:16:06 Conclusion and Support Resources~Reach out to the Nuanced Naturopaths here! *CORRECTION: At 18:59, we start talking about nasal "turbicles". We say this word a lot. We get excited, and even question if "turbicles" is the right word, before agreeing that it's the right word, and carrying on. Future editing Karinda realises we in fact meant to say "nasal turbinates" - not turbicles. Turbicles aren't a thing. You're cordially invited to laugh at our mistake.

In this episode we look at the nuance in the discussion around fat, and obesity and what it means in terms of health. You literally can’t judge a book by its chunky cover, nor can you decide that a skinny ‘book’ is healthy either. This episode reveals the tip of the iceberg in the discussion about body weight, fat gain, fat loss and what we, as a society, think about it. We uncover nuance in the terminology of the adipostat (body weight set point), obesogens, lipedema, the recent change to the food landscape and a holistic look at the meaning of health. **Correction: When talking about fatty liver Julie said ‘visceral fat within the liver’ when meant to use the term ‘ectopic fat’. Check out this new article "Obese and Healthy" which summarises our points in this episode. Further nuance: We open the can of worms that is excess body fat to examine the nuance around using body size to determine one's state of health. We are not saying that carrying excess body fat is innately healthy - but, nor is it always unhealthy! Nor is it a direct product of food and lifestyle choices, necessarily. Medical practitioners, gym instructors, and the general public often look at body weight as a ‘one size fits all’ determinant of health and can unfairly apply judgement, or in some cases diagnoses, or other assumptions inappropriately. The resulting guilt and shame can be arguably more damaging than the cardiometabolic implications that excess fat sometimes carries. Equally, overlooking these risk factors in people of slimmer build can be dangerous, being thin or even athletic does not guarantee good overall health. This episode is only the tip of the iceberg in the discussion about body weight, fat gain, fat loss and what we, as a society, think about it. ~ Reach out to the Nuanced Naturopaths here! It was a pleasure chatting with Daniel Ebbett, founder of Block Blue Light. As well as telling us about his personal health journey and what led him to delve into the world of blue light blocking, we discuss the importance of circadian rhythms & the impact of natural versus artificial light on our health. We explore why limiting blue light exposure at night is crucial for better sleep AND overall wellbeing, touch on the benefits of the red light therapy as a powerful tool for optimising our health & much more (as per usual). The all-round fabulous Rebecca Edwards from Activated Probiotics kicks off this interview with her favourite organ: the VAGINA! We delve into the vaginal microbiome, how this changes across the lifespan, during pregnancy & into menopause, and the success of a specific probiotic strain in treating common microbial imbalances, such as thrush. Rebecca walks us through some of the recent research in the probiotic space (shoutout to the gut-bone axis) and why probiotics are such a joy to prescribe with confidence. We also meet the “keto bro” bacterium bad guys that are found in your oral microbiome and how they’re linked to the development of dementias - truly fascinating stuff! Please practice self-responsibility when consuming media that contains themes which could negatively impact your mental health or emotional balance. We discuss depression & childhood trauma in this episode. If you choose to listen, please ensure you have tools and resources at-the-ready to help regulate yourself. Helpful resources & links below.Karinda heard something about depression (and trauma) on Theo Von’s “This Past Weekend” podcast interviewing Tim Fletcher, made a post about it, and Julie reacts in real-time to this perspective. As naturopaths, we’re passionate about getting to the root of symptoms, so when we heard the idea of depression as a means of “slowing down” your nervous system, activating your rest-digest-restore healing mechanisms, we had to talk about it. Julie graciously reads out Karinda’s caption, which includes some of her own history with nervous system dysregulation, trauma and depression.LINKS: Lifeline: 13 11 14 Suicide hotline Beyond Blue Black Dog Institute Havening video Tapping for Depression Meditation for Depression full ep of This Past Weekend with Theo Von, featuring Tim Fletcher~Reach out to the Nuanced Naturopaths here!
