Happy Halloween, kiddies! The OST Party is back to celebrate spooky season with an episode all about 1995's Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight! "Tales from the Crypt" ran on HBO from 1989 to 1996, featuring spooky tales adapted from the comic series of the same name, and in 1995 they broke into movies with Demon Knight. The film stars William Sadler as the titular demon knight, protecting a sacred talisman from The Collector, played by national treasure Billy Zane, who's having a hellaciously good time in this ridiculous movie about demons, holy blood, and all kinds of gross, goopy nonsense. The soundtrack is wall-to-wall 90s metal, featuring tracks from Pantera, Filter, Megadeth, Gravediggaz, and more! School's back in session, and we're back to discuss one of the most iconic high school comedies of the 80s: Fast Times at Ridgemont High! Fast Times is a year in the life of your typical gang of high school kids: You got the kids just try to make a buck, the ones obsessed with sex, the ones obsessed with finding love... And then, of course, you've got Jeff Spicoli, Sean Penn's totally baked surfer dude. As their stories weave in and out, the film is threaded throughout by one of the largest soundtracks we've ever covered. We'll talk about solo tracks from four members of the Eagles, The Go-Gos, Billy Squier, Jimmy Buffett, Donna Summer, and a whole lot more! It's graduation season and that means it's time to reminisce about the time we spent in college. And we do just that on this week's episode! We're discussing the soundtrack to the 1994 college dramedy With Honors. Joe Pesci plays homeless man Simon who befriends college senior Brendan Fraser, who's desperate to finish his senior thesis, and Pesci offers to help him in exchange for room and board. All the life lessons and general feelgoodery is the perfect canvas for a soundtrack full of early 90s schmaltz and Gen X longing. We get a surprisingly great theme song by Madonna; requisite cover songs from Duran Duran, Belly and The Pretenders. There's also a haunting duet between Kristin Hersh and Michael Stipe, a goofy one-off from Mudhoney, and hey! Lindsey Buckingham is back! The film ain't much to talk about, but the soundtrack sent us down some wild rabbit holes. So crack open a cold one, put on your favorite alma mater sweater and join the party! We're back! It's been too long since our last episode, but Rad Day is here and we couldn't let it go without celebrating it properly. What is Rad, you ask? Rad is every 80s sports movie you've ever seen, wrapped up in a package of BMX bikes, cheesy butt rock and more synthesizers than you can jump a bike over. It's ridiculous, it's kinda lame, but's also so completely RAD. Helltrack is coming to town, and our hero Cru has a chance to prove to the BMX world he's the best racer around. And, in the process, he manages to woo Christian, a racer from a professional team who also happens to be played by a pre-Full House Lori Loughlin. Anyway... It's Rad! We're back! For our 95th episode, we bring you a collection of soundtrack cuts from 1995. It was the height of the 90s, when 80s pop stars showed up in the most random movies, fledgling rock bands popped up on teen cult classics, and also Eagles guitarist Joe Walsh Eagles teamed up with Lita Ford to do the theme song for a RoboCop TV series. 1995 was definitely a mood... Also appearing in this episode: Tom Jones covering Lenny Kravitz for the Jerky Boys movie, The Proclaimers covering The Everly Brothers' "Bye Bye Love" for the movie Bye Bye Love, we get a few cuts from Green Day, Wax, and Salt N' Pepa. Also Bryan Adams performs the drippiest, horniest song ever written... Ladies and gentlemen, this is 1995. Hello all you OST Party fans out there in radioland! Are you ready to rock?! On this episode we're looking at the 1994 comedy AIRHEADS! Adam Sandler, Steve Buscemi and OST Party fave Brendan Fraser are The Lone Rangers, a down and out LA rock trio. In a last ditch effort to land a record deal, they take a radio station hostage and demand to have their music heard. The movie may be a grim foreshadowing of FM rock radio's future, but the movie's a hell of a lot of fun. And the soundtrack is pretty neat too. We get a slammin' opening credits song from Motorhead and Ice T, a weird Smiths cover from Anthrax, an even weirder Van Halen cover from Four Non Blondes, and naturally, the #1 hit single from the movie's own Lone Rangers! So strap yourselves in and get ready to rock! We're ringing in the new year with a film we've been wanting to cover for a long time. It's the 1978 cult film FM, about a Los Angeles radio station fighting back against The Man with some of the coolest rock jams of the 70s. Or at least, that's what the movie is supposed to be about. Mostly it's an excuse for Martin Mull to ham things up while they shoot a Linda Ronstadt concert. And maybe we'll get celebrity cameos from Tom Petty and REO Speedwagon along the way. It's barely a movie, and not even a good one at that. Really though, FM is more famous for its soundtrack album, which is absolutely STACKED with some of the top rock hits of the era. We get two cuts from Steely Dan, including that excellent title track, as well as songs from Bob Seger, Boston, Foreigner, Boz Scaggs, and a whooole lot more! So put on your denim jackets and let's rock & roll! SHOW NOTES FOR THIS EPISODE: FM is available on DVD, or you can watch it on YouTube More about Hard Rock Park For more Steely Dan, check out our episode on Me, Myself & Irene INTRO: "Dance Rocket" by Jesse Spillane OUTRO: "FM (Reprise)" by Steely Dan Have a soundtrack you'd like us to cover? We may have missed Halloween, but so what? On this episode we take you back to sunny Los Angeles for a look at the soundtrack to 1992's Buffy The Vampire Slayer, the feature film blueprint for one of the most iconic TV series of the 90s. This soundtrack is pretty typical of what you'd find on a movie soundtrack in 1992. You've got the requisite covers from artists like Divinyls and Mary's Danish, the sensitive guy rock from Matthew Sweet and Toad the Wet Sprocket, The Cult and Ozzy Osbourne giving us a couple of random metal tracks, and hey why not, have some C+C Music Factory! So throw on your leather jackets and sharpen your stakes, because it's time for some Buffy! The fall semester is in full swing, so what better time to revisit the 1986 comedy classic Back to School! Rodney Dangerfield is here to give higher learning a lesson in the real world, and he's bringing Oingo Boingo with him! That's right, OST Party mainstays Oingo Boingo are back for another college comedy. (Man, we just can't let Teen Wolf Too go, huh?) Also on this soundtrack we get a title track from Jude Cole, the requisite Aretha Franklin gag, and a hair metal jam from none other than Michael Bolton! This week we mourn the passing of the incomparable Paul Reubens. His most famous creation, Pee-wee Herman, taught kids of all stripes that there's beauty in the weird and kitschy parts of the world, and that just because we grow up doesn't mean we have to stop being silly. And throughout his career, Reubens incorporated lots of music into the Pee-wee persona. So on this episode we'll take you through the musical history of Pee-wee Herman. We'll start with his 1981 stage show, dig into his three feature films, and highlight some of the strange places Pee-wee has popped up along the way. Who knows, we might even make a pit stop at the Alamo! Greetings bluntskulls! On this episode we celebrate the 30th anniversary of Coneheads! Wayne's World proved there was a market for SNL comedies in the 90s, so naturally here's a movie based on the Coneheads, space aliens from the planet Remulak just trying to fit in among regular humans. It's basically an excuse for Dan Aykroyd to be a big weirdo for 90 minutes. And the soundtrack is equally weird. We've got a handful of really great, classic tracks (including an inexplicable hit single from the Red Hot Chili Peppers), a couple of really great cover songs, as well as one of the worst cover songs we have ever covered on this show. And, of course, Dan Aykroyd has to have a song too. A land of contrasts, this album! It's been 25 years since The X-Files jumped to the big screen! The first of two features based on the show, Fight The Future is The X-Files as a big-budget summer blockbuster. There's alien conspiracies, explosions, races through cornfields, killer bees for some reason... There's a lot to unpack with this film. And naturally, it came with a pretty stellar soundtrack. The usual suspects of mid-90s rock are all here, including Foo Fighters, Tonic, Better Than Ezra, Ween, and more! We even get a couple cover tunes, courtesy of X and Filter which, honestly, the less said about that one the better... On this episode we go back to the 90s, an era when studios had no problem grabbing any old comic book and turning it into the craziest movie you've ever seen. Case in point: Tank Girl! In a future wasteland where water is worth more than gold, Lori Petty teams up with Naomi Watts to steal a tank, befriend some kangaroo people, and save the world from a robot-armed Malcolm McDowell. And along the way we get a Cole Porter song, a movie rap courtesy of co-star Ice-T, and all kinds of tunes from some 90s alt-rock greats! High school buds Shore and Sean Astin dig up and thaw out caveman Fraser, and proceed to teach him how to be cool in early 90s southern California! When we're not hollering about movie soundtracks, our second favorite hobby is hollering about Star Wars. So on this episode we bring you a Special Edition of our On The Fives where we take a look at ten songs about or inspired by Star Wars. But there's a twist! With each song, we take turns pitching our own ideas for Star Wars movies based on those songs. And we've got some real bangers here. A new year brings a new series here on the OST Party! This week's film, the 1999 sci-fi rom-com Blast from the Past, marks the finale of our neo-swing trilogy, and also the beginning of our series on the films of Brendan Fraser. Blast from the Past, as Libby's husband Ian pointed out, is like if you crossed Encino Man with The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. And the soundtrack reflects that weird clash of tones. You've got the square 60s tunes of Perry Como, the neo-swing revival of The Cherry Poppin' Daddies and Squirrel Nut Zippers, and modern 90s rock in acts like Everclear, Dishwalla and Sonichrome. The whole thing is a fascinating time capsule of where we were in the late-90s, and how that era is well and truly behind us. Time marches on, and so do we! This episode runs the gamut of everything from the new jack swing of Ghostbusters II to the classic rock of Hot Fuzz, and a whole lot in between! This podcast has been overrun by gremlins! We were supposed to do a Thanksgiving episode on Planes Trains & Automobiles, but the powers that be said, "No, you're doing Gremlins." Those powers may or may not be gremlins. (Send help!) Anyway, Gremlins has been described as It's A Wonderful Life by way of Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and while that thematic well runs deep, the film is mostly concerned with lots and lots of puppet mayhem! The soundtrack album is short, but features some strange choices, including tracks from Peter Gabriel, Quarterflash and Michael Sembello. We'll also discuss a few of the holiday needledrops, which have become classic scenes in their own right. So grab a glass of egg nog and join us for the wild ride that is Gremlins! We're returning to the world of Edgar Wright this week with the soundtrack to Hot Fuzz! Wright has a reputation for movie soundtracks that are impeccably curated, and Hot Fuzz is no different. The story of The Only Good Cop In England solving a string of murders in the small village of Sandford finds Wright leaning heavily on classic rock tunes from every era. The film is an absolute riot, but the soundtrack is equally impressive. Sporting tracks from classic acts The Kinks, The Troggs, and The Crazy World of Arthur Brown, but also more modern artists such as The Fratellis, Supergrass and Eels. So strap on your kevlar, water the peace lily and join us down at the pub for a little Hot Fuzz! SHOW NOTES: Hot Fuzz is available to stream here!
