Dominik Hasek is a two time Stanley Cup Champion, and Olympic Gold Medalist who is considered amongst the best goaltenders in the history of hockey. He played for 16 seasons with four different NHL teams and won the Vezina Trophy as the NHL's most outstanding goalie 6 times. He is also the only goaltender to win the Hart Trophy as the NHL's most valuable player twice. Hašek was the first European Goaltender to win the Stanley Cup, setting an NHL play-off record for shutouts in the process and is credited for opening the door for future European goaltenders who are now a strong force across the NHL. In 1998 in Nagano, Japan, he led Czech Republic to their first and only Olympic Gold medal, famously shutting out Canada in a tie-breaking shootout & eliminating the Canadian “dream team” along the way. Mike Knuble is the only NHL player to have been teammates with the top 2 goal scorers in NHL history: Wayne Gretzky and Alex Ovechkin. He shares some great stories about playing with both Ovechkin and Gretzky and why their playing styles may have been different, but their impact to their teammates and to the NHL was very similar. Knuble played in the NHL for 16 seasons in over 1,000 NHL games. He won the Stanley Cup early in his career with the 1998 Detroit Red wings and has an NHL record himself - Knuble is the NHL record holder for the fastest 2 goals, by the same player, to start an NHL Game. Milan Hejduk is the Colorado Avalanche team record holder for most games played in franchise history! Hejduk didn't just "play" - he was an essential part of the 2001 Stanley Cup season, won the 2003 Rocket Richard Trophy for scoring the most goals in the NHL that season, and is one of only 3 players to wear the "C" for the Avalanche. In 2011, TIM THOMAS put on one of the greatest Stanley Cup goaltending performances in NHL history! He led the Boston Bruins to their 6th Stanley Cup setting the NHL record for most saves during the Stanley Cup playoffs, winning the Conn Smyth Trophy as the 'Most Valuable Player' of the 2011 Stanley Cup in the process. Thomas became the oldest player to win this award. Tim's hockey career to develop into one of the game's greatest goalies is one of perseverance and courage. He did not become a starting NHL Goaltender for the Bruins until he was 31 years old but then went on to play in 4 NHL All Star games, won two Vezina Trophies as the NHL's most outstanding Goaltender and of course, his Stanley Cup and Conn Smyth Trophies in 2011. His playing days came to a close after suffering a life altering concussion and sustaining brain damage that went undiagnosed until after his career ended. As he did as a player, Tim has shown great courage and fortitude in his life after hockey in moving forward with the challenges and effects of this injury. Now living a quiet, peaceful life in Vermont, he does not speak often publicly about his playing days or about his life after hockey, so we are very happy to be able to share his incredible story & memories with you today. Ron Hextall is one of the best goaltenders to play in the NHL in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s. He played 13 seasons and built a reputation for being “intense, unhinged, and very talented". Ron is best remembered as a Philadelphia Flyer where he is still the holder of multiple team goaltending records to this day. He is also the NHL record holder for most penalty minutes in both in a single season, and for all-time career penalty minutes which includes 6 fighting majors. Hextall is also a goaltending “pioneer” - credited to be amongst the first goalies to develop strong puck handling skills, which is now an expected skill for all NHL goaltenders. He became the first goaltender in NHL history to score a goal by shooting it into the opponent’s net, and is the only goalie to have done it twice in NHL history. Doug Jarvis is a SIX TIME STANLEY CUP CHAMPION..!! He has the distinction of NEVER missing a single NHL game in his entire 13 year NHL Career. Jarvis was the long time holder of the NHL Iron Man Record for playing in 964 consecutive NHL Games – an NHL record that stood for 34 Years until being recently surpassed by Kieth Yandle and Phil Kessel. Doug he won 4 straight Stanley Cups, 1976 through 1979 as a key member of the 1970’s Montreal Canadian’s dynasty. In 1984 he won the Frank Selke Trophy Winner as the NHL’s “best defensive forward”, and in 1987 won the Bill Masterton Trophy Winner for breaking the NHL’s Ironman record for most consecutive games played. After retiring as a player, he continued his “iron man” work ethic as an Assistant Coach and became an NHL Assistant Coach for 26 seasons. He won his 5th Stanley Cup as an Assistant Coach of the 1999 Dallas Stars and then won his 6th Stanley Cup as an assistant Coach of the 2011 Boston Bruins. Clarke scored 1,210 points in 1,144 career games, he played in 9 NHL All Star games and had three 100 point seasons during his NHL career. Bob was also a key member of Canada’s 1972 “Canada – Russia” Summit Series team. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1987 and was named one of the NHL’s Top 100 players of all time. This week we welcome Stanley Cup Champion Dan Boyle..! Dan is described by teammates and coaches as one of most intense and competitive players ever to play in the NHL. He joined the NHL as an undrafted, undersized D man who played much bigger than his listed height & weight and played for 17 seasons with four different NHL teams. Boyle was a two-time All-Star, he posted 605 points in 1,093 games and was a key part of the Tamp Bay Lightning’s 2004 Stanley Cup championship and helped the San Jose Sharks make the playoffs in each of his six seasons with the team. Ken Hitchcock spent 23 year career as an NHL Head Coach and became known as being one of the best communicators, motivators and strategists in all of coaching – not just in hockey, but in any sport! He has the 6th most career wins by a coach in NHL History and guided the Dallas Stars to their first and only Stanley Cup Championship in 1999. Along with legends Guy Lafleur and Jacques Lemaire, Shutt helped form one of the most DOMINANT lines in NHL history winning multiple Stanley Cups with the Montreal Canadians in the process!! He is 5th in all time points with the Montreal Candians and was the 1st Left Winger to score 60 goals in NHL history. Born and raised a Toronto boy, back in high school, Shutt hung around and was friends with Geddy Lee and he introduced Lee to Alex Lifeson. He spent a season as the Captain of the Washington Capitals, and finished the last 7 seasons of his NHL career with the Flames – both in Atlanta and in Calgary After his retirement as an active player, he went to enjoy one of the most successful broadcasting careers of any former NHL player – His knowledge of the game and ability to connect with viewers made him one of the most recognized voices in hockey. He has broadcast 21 Stanley Cup finals and 5 Olympic Games and in 2022, was recognized by the Hockey Hall of Fame as a “Media Honouree” and was awarded the Foster Hewitt Memorial Award for outstanding contributions as a hockey broadcaster. Among all-time Oilers, he ranks 4th in Short-handed goals, 7th in games played with 701, and holds the Oiler’s team record for playing in 518 consecutive games. Despite being undrafted, he played 17 seasons in the NHL and made one of the biggest impacts of any goaltender of his time! He won the Calder Trophy as NHL 1991 rookie of the year, the Vezina Trophy as the NHL's best goalie (twice) the Stanley Cup in 1999, he played in 5NHL All Star Games, he was a member of the 2002 Canadian Olympic Gold Medal team becoming one of only two players to have won an NCAA championship, a Stanley Cup and an Olympic Gold Medal. This is one of our craziest interviews yet - Lyle Odelein, a 16 year NHL veteran and Stanley Cup Champion with the 1993 Montreal Canadians joins us this week!! Lyle is the current Canadians record holder for most assists in a single game by a defenceman – 5 (co-holds the record with Doug Harvey & Sheldon Souray). In addition to his 7 years with the Habs, he also played 4 years with the New Jersey Devils, in 2000-01 became the very first team captain of the expansion Columbus Blue Jackets. Here is where the crazy part comes in - in 2018, Lyle nearly lost his life, spending 60 days in a coma, became paralyzed and went through a heart valve transplant as well as kidney & liver transplants – all in the same day - to save his life!! Justin is a 3 time Stanley Cup Champion who played 19 seasons in the NHL for the Philadelphia Flyers, Carolina Hurricanes, Los Angeles Kings and the Washington Capitals. Williams was a first round draft pick, 28th overall by the Philadelphia Flyers in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft. In 2014 Justin won the Conn Smyth Trophy as playoff MVP while winning his 3rd Stanley Cup as a member of the Los Angeles Kings. He earned his “Mr. Game 7” nickname while playing in 9 ‘Game 7’ playoff games, with his team winning 8 of them and setting the NHL record for most career points in a Game 7 with 15, acquired in just 9 games!! Vincent Damphousse played 18 seasons in the NHL after being selected 6th overall in the first round of the 1986 NHL Entry Draft by the Toronto Maple Leafs - the first French-Canadian ever to be selected by the Leafs in the first round! He was a steady offensive player for the Leafs for 5 years until being traded to the Edmonton Oilers for a single season, then to his hometown Montreal Canadians. With the Habs, his career climbed by leading the Montreal Canadians in scoring when they won their last Stanley Cup in 1993 defeating Wayne Gretzky and LA Kings in 5 games- it was the last time a Canadian NHL has won the Cup! He eventually became the Canadians Captain before finishing his career with the San Jose Sharks. Thrilled to have Gary Roberts join us this week! A 21 year NHL veteran with the Flames, Hurricanes, Leafs, Florida , Pittsburgh and Tampa Bay Lightening. He was a first round selection of the Calgary Flames in the 1984 NHL entry draft and became a Stanley Cup Champion with the Flames in 1989. Roberts was forced into retirement with a chronic, debilitating neck injury, but after a year and half away from the game, came out of retirement in 1997 and played for 11 more seasons. Roberts became known throughout his career as being the best shape of ANY player in the NHL and is now regarded as one of the best off-ice trainers to many of the current star players in the National Hockey League.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
