It is more likely than not he was excommunicated, given the nature and number of accusations. If he was baptized into another religion, that's automatic excommunication. If he's convicted criminally, that's also automatic excommunication. And the last time the Mormon church publicly repudiated someone so openly was July of 1842, so that was, indeed, almost unprecedented.
