The Other Day with Hoani Hotene

We got interviews with some of the best comics in Aotearoa and probably just a lot of Hoani's friends. Each week I'll be chatting to a new person about comedy, life and a bunch of other stuff. Hoani won a few awards in comedy and that went straight to his head. Guy has a damn, podcast now. Talking to people about his own ideas on comedy like he knows what's happening. If that sounds like something you enjoy stick around. Each week I'mma try find new and interesting people to bounce ideas against and see what happens. Thanks for tuning in

#30 - Callum Wagstaff - The Tim Burton of Comedy

This week we got the road dog, the Tim Burton of NZ comedy himself, Callum Wagstaff. We talk about travelling all over the country doing comedy, Callum's unique point of view in comedy and a bunch of other stuff. Honestly this was a really nice chat with a very funny comic and hope you guys enjoy the show. #29 pt. 1 - Joana Joy, Trent H. Baumann, and Viki Moananu - Late and Great Comedy Fest

We are back! This may be episode 29 of The Other Day but we are making it number 1 of season 2! The only real change is we are playing a few episodes recorded a little while ago as we catch up to the present time. But I didn't want people to miss out on some of the loveliest chats we had before this break. The first was a preview episode between myself and a few of the comics happening just before the NZ Comedy Fest, with Joana Joy, Trent H. Baumann, and Viki Moananu. 3 of the most fun comics in the Wellington scene. Each of them had amazing shows in the fest and will all be busy in the Wellington scene again. This was recorded alongside another interview with 3 more comics. So I'm putting this down as part 1 and sending out part 2 in a couple days! Enjoy!

#19 - Te Waiarangi Ratana & Jackson Herman - The Freestyling Christmas Episode

We are back! And for the first episode of 2024 I have Te Waiarangi Ratana and Jackson Herman! Two guys that toe the line between the film world and the world of stand-up comedy. Both have worked with some of the biggest names in film including James Cameron and Peter Jackson. Te Waiarangi has been recently showing his newest short film 'Honey Kaha' with several of Aotearoa's best up-and-coming comedians playing roles throughout And this episode was originally recorded on December 23rd, so Christmas is on the mind. This show as always is recorded at the Wellington Access Radio studios and is first done as a live radio show. So sorry if you hear us talk a bit about the music in there but it's all part the fun. Thanks for listening and I hope you keep coming back for 2024!

#28 - Rachel Rouge - The Traveller

Stoked to have one of the most interesting people in the Wellington scene join me for this weeks podcast! I'd known that Rachel had done a ton of travelling and wild experiences but it wasn't until researching and chatting with them that I got a vibe of how wild some of her life has been. A guest I would love to have back to touch more of their life another time. If you wanna catch the show they're promoting it is The Wellington Comedy Club Rainbow Showcase - May 15 Tickets available on the NZ Comedy Fest page

#27 - Trent H Baumann - Chats with the Birdmann

The Vanguard of Vaudeville himself joins the show! Trent H Baumann is one of the most travelled and accomplished comics in the Wellington scene. Having a wild ride into the world of entertainment, starting out in the strip malls of Surfer's Paradise and going round the globe with his thoughtful and whimsical style of performance. I really enjoyed getting to know a bit more about Trent. He and I have done quite a few shows in Wellington and you can see much more of his shows through MONFU - the production company he and his wife Sachie run in Wellington. See Trent in the NZ Comedy Fest! 'Stop the Noise. Listen to the Music' - Wellington, 14-18 May, Bats Theatre

#26 - Itay Dom Returns - Sunglasses Comedy

We welcome back the first guest to ever be on this show! Itay and I had just finished a 3 night run at the NZ Fringe, which included a couple of wild nights. Each show with him is very different so I'd recommend seeing him anytime you can. His usual spot is The Classic in Auckland but you can see him each Tuesday at Il Brutto running a great gig down there. If you're in Welly and wanna catch him he'll be opening for Jack Ansett - What's Everyone Having For Dinner? in the NZ Comedy Fest, or a crowd work show, 'Crowd Pleaser' only in Auckland. Kia Ora we are back! It has been a busy run of festivals and fringes and gigs. But what an episode to come back to! David and Ocean are two of my favourite comics, both on and off the stage. They were down in Wellington for the NZ Fringe festival and I was lucky enough to be able to get them in the studio. #24 - Sowmya Hiremath - The Strange and the Arranged

Sowmya Hiremath is Wellington's best stand-ups and nicest people. Everytime me and Sowmya chat I end up learning so much more than I expected. This episode wasn't meant to end being so heavily revolved around arranged marriage but it was pretty fascinating to have it go that way. If you wanna see Sowmya she has an upcoming show with Samantha Hannah called Sisters. Get your tickets at Fringe.co.nz

#23 - Zach Mandeville & Leki Lyons - Being Extra with the Terrestrials

We are doing an episode almost entirely about consiparacy theories and alien interactions. Last time Zach and Leki were in the studio the most exciting part of the chat was when we started chatting aliens. So this week I decided we'd commit a whole episode to some of the strangest stories out there and it did not dissapoint. Part of what makes this such a fun chat is the fact these two will spend hours devouring some of the strangest stories online and coming in with a bunch more info than your casual fan. Make sure to catch Zach at AirHorn! each first Friday of the month at Newtown Community Centre and buy tickets to Leki's Fringe show Moonlight Leki during the NZ Fringe Festival

#22 - Kipling DC & Keegan Thomas - The 2nd Biggest Skuxx's on Google

You don't just become the second biggest skuxx's on Google you have to work for that honour and this week I speak with two of the hardest working people in that game with comedians Kipling DC and Keegan Thomas. We play 'Skux or Yucks', get pretty analytical on the best BYO's around Wellington and maybe break the record for more 'x' sounds made in a podcast. Check out their show in the fringe Skuxx Delux, Feb 16,17,18 at Cavern Club - Tix available on the Fringe website or Get the final few tickets for Don't Quit Your Day Job - Feb 16-17, Bats Theatre, 6pm - Tickets at Bats.co.nz

#21 - Lesa Macleod-Whiting & Jerome Chandrahasen - Don't Quit Your Day Job

Two of the funniest people in Wellington join the show this week to talk about some of the weirdest jobs they've had inside and outside the business of show. A strange role in an unmade movie, love advice in a morph suit, and the very extra role of a Wellington fat-berg. We cover a bunch of wild stuff in todays show and there is even a couple fun facts in there at the end for the fun fact fans. The three of us are all working together on a show in the upcoming NZ Fringe called Don't Quit Your Day Job and tickets are still available at the Fringe and Bats websites now.

#20 - James Mustapic & Booth the Clown - Celebs, Psychics and Treasure

Recent winner of Celebrity Treasure Island James Mustapic joins myself and good friend of the show Booth the Clown to talk psychics, NZ celebs and a bunch of Celebrity Treasure Island. This was the first time I'd ever watched NZ Celebrity Treasure Island and turns out Booth was the same. If you're a fan of the show we get behind the scenes a little bit with James' experience being on the show as well as chatting a lot about his early experience in the world of YouTube and highs and lows of hanging with some NZ's most iconic cultural icons.

#18 - Mo Munn & Ralph Hilaga (Mo and Ralph)

We've got two of the wildest performers in Wellington in the house tonight. Known for their crazy antics in shows such as Wet Soup and their own podcast Muunboot, improv duo Mo and Ralph come in and join the show to talk about a bunch of cool stuff. Including Christmas shopping, whoa, I know! What better day to release an episode about Christmas than boxing day itself. This is the stuff that makes the guy running this show a genius. That, and getting one of the guests name's wrong right at the top of the show. Mensa hit this guy up now. But overall a super nice chat with two really funny people. If you wanna see them they'll be on at the NZ Fringe Fest Mo and Ralph: Chaos Theory - Feb 29-Mar 2 - 7:30pm as well as their podcast: Basejumps Comedy Pod Oven

Joana Joy aka Banana Jolie comes into the studio and talks about their life in meditations coming into their shows, aerial performance, and how they were destined to perform since childhood. Also Booth joins us once again, now good friend of the show Booth also was a trailblazer performer since being a kid and with a bunch of hard work since then has made their way onto 3 podcasts! Wow, isn't life crazy ay? If you wanna follow these guys on Social Media check IG: @booththeclown for Booth @joanajoycomedy & @banana_jolie for Joana Joy

#16 - Hadley Wilson & Clara Van Wel

These two guests hit the Wellington arts scene in so too many areas to count! Self-described 'Gay-of-all-trades' and Swiftie Hadley Wilson and Singer/Author/Comedian Clara Van Wel join me in the studio this week. In this episode we talk more about Taylor Swift, Musical Theatre, and matchmaking than any episode before. So for all you who keep asking, you're welcome. Not only did we chat about it, we probably got the two best in the bizz to chat about it too. Clara also touches on their band Rocket Berry who you can check out on Spotify now and follow them IG: @rocketberryband Also check out Hadley's shows: Follow: FB: Crooked Love Productions IG: Crookedlovenz

#15 - Neil Thornton, Jojo Bellini & Kipling DC

Another episode with some of the most experienced comics in Wellington (Plus tall child Kipling DC)! A lot of comics in New Zealand will have had the pleasure of beginning their comedy careers under the education of Neil Thornton who has been in the comedy game for many years and now runs the NZ Comedy School with students from all over the country. Jojo Bellini will also be a familiar name to anyone whose attended a burlesque or cabaret show in Wellington over the past few years having dipped her toes into a number of different scenes throughout New Zealand and across the globe. Also joined by now friend of the show Kipling DC who likes to be called Big Dog and has made that quite a large part of his personality. Look out for all three of these stars who will be a large part of the NZ Fringe in 2024!

#14 - The Very Chill, Very Cool, Hoani and Leki Episode

We are back with another episode of The Other Day! And today it is just myself and the often imitated, never replicated Leki Lyons. This episode we talk a bit about each others lives and families, and to be honest keep quite a chill tone throughout. Myself and Leki recorded this episode quite early on in the lifespan of this show, so it was a pleasure going back and hearing this with fresh ears again. The shortest episode because it was recorded as a filler for when I might be travelling around the country - but it is packed with punch and a little more info about the show's most tenured guest As always thank you to Wellington Access Radio. This show is recorded live each week Friday 6-7pm on Wellington Access Radio 106.1 fm

#13 - Daniel John Smith & Anya Rzhevitskaya

What a Dope As show! It is lucky episode number 13! And the unlucky nature of the number lines up with edgy nature of the show! If you're Blenheim and are over 73, you might wanna give this one a miss! Hoani and the 'podcast's best friend' Leki Lyons are joined by the dopest comedians and producers in the Wellington scene. Daniel John Smith and Anya Rzhevitskaya run the Drug of Choice production company and live up to the name they gave it. These two have been running gigs around Wellington for several years and we get into stories about the country about their lives and talk a decent amount of trash about Blenheim. Check out their gigs at Drug of Choice on Facebook
