There are many things that feel awkward to ask of our guests, our audience or our participants BUT, as Penny Terry discusses in this episode of the Penny Drop, it's usually not as awkward as we think, and the benefits can be greater than we think. In this episode Penny recalls the first time she decided to 'ask' and the result she saw was beyond what she imagined. --- JOIN MY HOUR OF POWER SERIES: https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/hour-of-power-series-communicate-with-influence-tickets-979551142837?aff=oddtdtcreator ---- Show notes: Hey, it's Penny here (more about me below) - if you have a question that you want answered on the pod, record it and then send a short voice memo to my email so I can use it on the Penny Drop (with your permission). There are things that many hosts don't know need to happen after EVERY thing we host. Penny's not talking about the routine stuff like editing and publishing and cleaning up. But the stuff that has much more significance on how your 'thing' is remembered. In this episode of The Penny Drop, Penny starts your post-thing process, with three things you need to share. This is THE episode. It's where Penny unpacks her Questions Compass. It's a tool Penny created to help all hosts better navigate and map out the best route for their interviews and conversations. It makes sure they're balanced and rich, get beneath the surface, and drag out concrete stories and quotable perspectives. While you may think its roots began in the radio studio, she actually started developing this when she was much much younger in her very first job... Turns out Penny didn't think she was a ritual person, but there is a whole list of things that she does every time she hosts something to make everything easier. The more she thought about it, the more she had and she realised that she'd set these up intentionally to make the process of hosting easier and her performance as a host better. In this episode of The Penny Drop, she goes through her list but also gives you three things to help guide your own rituals, helping you to be a better host. ---- Show notes: Hey, it's Penny here (more about me below) - if you have a question that you want answered on the pod, record it and then send a short voice memo to my email so I can use it on the Penny Drop (with your permission). Finding it hard to find ideas, new angles, or great guests for your show, meeting or event? In this week's episode of The Penny Drop, Penny shares a metaphor that will get you thinking and get you drafting. She explains that having a good drafting system for your ideas isn't just something you do on 'podcasting days' it's something good hosts do all the time. It's a way of being. Many people ask Penny how they can improve their skills as a podcast, radio, event (or even meeting) host, but often they want to start in the wrong place. Understandably, most of us tend to want to improve our scripting, or content, our tech or how we look and sound because we care about the end result. However, in this episode of The Penny Drop, Penny talks about the art of calibration and how getting this bit right early, affects everything else that follows. --- Show notes: Hey, It's Penny here (more about me below) - if you have a question that you want answered on the pod, record it and then send a short voice memo to my email so I can use it on the Penny Drop (with your permission). Penny's been reflecting on her experiences as a radio, podcast and event host and learning from other great hosts as she prepares for a season full of tips and techniques to help you become a better host. Penny thought of you this morning because her 'smart' watch sent her a message and she instantly wondered if you'd ever received one like it. For a lot of the people Penny works with they get messages like this loud and clear every day and it's pretty demoralising. So she just wanted to say hi and also remind you that she'll be back with a brand new season soon.

When Penny started her career behind the mic as a young (and very enthusiasstic) radio presenter she accidentally began a morning ritual which she now credits for fast-tracking her confidence and skills. She expects it'll make you cringe and feel awkward but has no doubt it's the glow-up your guest interview appearances need.

In this episode of The Penny Drop, Penny talks about something that the Aurora Australis (The Southern Lights) and interviews have in common - yep, she links a natural phenomenon with our ability to be a better guest. Strangely the link isn't as tenuous as you'd think!

I love both sides of a conversation - equally. I know powerful questions leverage powerful stories. As such, I'm all about helping people and organisations to ask better questions, share better stories, and create better systems to make it easy (and interesting) for people to engage with who you are, what you do and why it matters. I spent more than a decade as an ABC radio presenter, I host and produce multiple-award-winning podcasts, and deliver keynotes, workshops and executive coaching services across the globe. I'm also the co-founder of for-purpose company Healthy Tasmania which I started with my awesome sister Lucy Byrne. Together we provide a range of services to help solve common problems that prevent people, communities and organisations from thriving.I've always wanted to be a rockstar and now sing to my kids (and colleagues) whenever I get the chance. I'd love to sit down with you and find the right way to use better questions, better stories and better systems to solve your engagement problems. Here's my website address again www.pennyterry.com

Penny has a problem with the word authenticity because it seems no one knows what it means anymore... yet everyone is trying to be it.
Hot tip: While you shouldn't have to try and be authentic, for anyone who's ever tried to open their mouths when the mic is turned on, remembering how to be yourself can be something we need to re-learn.
This is certainly Penny's experience and in this episode of The Penny Drop, she talks about one of the most instructive conversations she had during her ten years as a radio presenter, the thing that helped, and three strategies that she's still trying to master to help be herself whenever the mic is on.
P.S. If you want to get on the WAITLIST for Penny's 3hr public workshop: Be a Better Guest then send an email to penny@pennyterry.com saying "put me on the waitlist" and you'll get first dibs on a spot (and early bird tickets), with no obligation to buy.

It's not uncommon for people to tell Penny that their last media interview felt like an out-of-body experience; they can't remember what they said, what they were asked, or whether they did any good!
This feeling is usually thanks to a particular brain mode that we engage during high-pressure situations. Penny's worked out how to disengage it, ensuring your next media, podcast or panel interview is a true in-of-body experience. In this week's episode of The Penny Drop, Penny runs you through three strategies to make sure you can create a real connection with the host, the audience, and your content.
WAITLIST: If you'd like to get on the waitlist for Penny's Be a Better Guest 3hr public workshops that are kicking off in just - send an email to penny@pennyterry.com with the subject: WAITLIST and Penny will be in touch.

The one thing that will make the most difference between a poor interview performance and a good one - is not skill, it's not knowledge - it's mindset.
Penny Terry has interviewed more than 20,000 people and in this episode of The Penny Drop, she talks about the three most effective strategies for mastering your mindset during an interview... and interestingly how they relate to Michael Jordon...

What do weddings and media interviews have in common? Now we think about it, probably lots of things... but there is one thing in particular that Penny wants you to think about as you get ready for your next media, podcast or panel interview. She reckons if you nail this, you'll nail the interview.

Do you have an idea of what you want to say in an interview but aren't really sure how to get it out? Maybe you're worried you won't be asked questions that will let you say what you want to say? Never fear! Penny has been here before, both literally and figuratively.
In this episode of The Penny Drop, your host Penny Terry shares a useful story to remind you what happens if we don't have a good enough map to help us navigate an interview. She then outlines three steps to help you create a map to get you from A to B without any roadblocks.
