There’s something strange about arriving at a life you once only dreamed of, only to realize it doesn’t look like you imagined. It’s softer. Quieter. A little messier. But somehow… so much better. In this episode, I’m reflecting on what it feels like to stop rushing, to stop measuring everything by what you haven’t done yet, and finally see your life for what it is: full, imperfect, and still unfolding in all the right ways. If you’ve ever wondered if you’re behind, if it’s too late, or if you missed your window, this one’s for you. Because you didn’t. You’re not. You’re right on time. In this conversation, I’m breaking down the real differences between DSLR and mirrorless camera systems—what they feel like to shoot with, how they impact your learning, and what you should know before making a decision. You’ll learn: The intuitive advantage of mirrorless (especially for newer photographers) Why DSLRs are still powerful, reliable tools What to consider if you’re torn between the two How to make a decision that aligns with your actual goals—not just what the internet says is “better” This episode isn’t about convincing you to switch. What if everything you thought you’d spend your life doing… suddenly wasn’t possible anymore? In todays episode, I’m sitting down with Paige Fremder—a portrait photographer, TPP alumni, and former professional musician in the Army Band—whose career took a turn she never saw coming. After a series of physical injuries and surgeries left her unable to continue performing at the level her job demanded, Paige made the incredibly hard decision to leave her career behind. She was in recovery, exhausted, a mom of two—and looking for something that could bring purpose, creativity, and stability into this new chapter of her life. That’s when she found photography. Her first goal? Make enough money to pay for a cleaning service once a month. And before she even finished The Photographer’s Path, she had done exactly that—and more. Since then, Paige has grown a business she never expected—one built not on the latest marketing trends and strategy, but on kindness, community, and consistently showing up. In this episode, she shares how she started, what helped her keep going, and what she would say to anyone feeling like they’re too late, too behind, or too uncertain to begin. If you’re a photographer trying to build your dream photography business—and it’s taking longer than you thought, this episode is for you. Let me introduce you to the lovely Sam of SA Photo and Film. Sam is a Southern California wedding photographer, a mom of two, and a Photographer’s Path alumni who built her business from the ground up. She didn’t go viral. She didn’t “make it” overnight. What she did do? She kept going. In this episode, we talk about what it really looks like to grow a photography business, especially in the early years. Sam shares how she stayed committed through slow seasons, built confidence as a beginner, and how her husband now shoots video alongside her as they work with dream clients across the country. Whether you’re just starting out, trying to book more clients, or wondering if you’re even good enough to make this your career—this conversation is a reminder that growth takes time. You'll learn: What it really looks like to grow as a photographer How to stay motivated when the bookings feel slow Why your timeline doesn’t determine your talent What’s possible when you keep showing up, even when it’s hard If you're a beginner wedding photographer or creative in your first few years—this is the encouragement you've been needing. Whether you're just starting out, stuck in a season of doubt, or wondering if this path is really meant for you—this conversation will remind you: your dream is so worth the wait. Let’s be honest: we all want to be great right away. But the truth is, every confident photographer you look up to? They started out unsure too. In this episode, we’re diving into the creative fears that show up—when you’re trying something new, stepping into a new skill, or finally saying yes to the dream that’s been tugging at you for way too long. This episode is the reminder you didn’t know you needed. You’ll hear a real story about a mistake I major mistake I just made on a shoot (yep, one that would’ve wrecked me a few years ago) and how I chose to keep going anyway. Because building a photography career, developing your creative voice, and growing your confidence? That comes from doing. Not waiting to be perfect. This episode will help you: Let go of the pressure to get it right the first time Reframe what it means to be a “beginner” Take your next creative step—without fear holding you back It’s time to stop waiting. Start the thing. Say yes to what’s calling you. You’ll learn more in the doing than you ever will in the planning. If you’ve found your way here, I want you to know this: you’re not alone. If you’ve ever looked around and wondered if you’re falling behind… If you’ve questioned whether all the effort, all the waiting, all the late nights editing or dreaming or doubting—will ever lead to something real… I created this episode for you. Inside, I’m sharing something really personal, something I wrote after coming back to my camera and realizing just how many seasons I’ve spent questioning my place in all of this, too. This isn’t about pushing harder or rushing to catch up. It’s a gentle space to reflect. A moment to breathe. And a reminder that growth doesn’t always look like progress from the outside. Whether you’re just starting out, coming back after a break, or sitting in the waiting, I hope this meets you exactly where you are and helps you feel a little more grounded in your path. You’re not behind. You’re growing in your own time. And there is still space for you here. ––– JOIN THE PHOTOGRAPHY PRACTICE WAITLIST HERE: https://horizonfound.com/photography-practice-waitlist GRAB OUR FREE MANUAL MODE CHEAT SHEET: https://resources.horizonfound.com/ FOLLOW US ON INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/horizonfound
Alright. We said we were making a podcast comeback before, and then… we disappeared again. But this time? It’s real. It’s happening. It’s waiting for you right now. I wanted this first episode back to feel like a reset—something light, fun, and like you’re just hanging out with friends who get your nerdy obsession with photography. So I called in Rachel Burns—a wildly talented motherhood + brand photographer, (TPP & Flash Course Alumni), and one of my good friends. She’s built a career that blends storytelling, emotion, and real life, the kind of work that makes you feel something. Whether she’s photographing families or brands, she captures the in-between sun soaked moments that bring images to life. And recently? She made her dream shoot in Hawaii happen—pitching brands, making connections, and pulling it off in the most incredible way. In this episode we talk all about how to pitch brands for travel shoots (because yes, you can get paid to shoot in dream destinations), but we also cover some very important topics, like: The great eyebrow catastrophe of 2025 My own personal armpit disaster, which was both painful and humbling. The chaos of motherhood, the reality of balance (or lack thereof), and the questionable fashion choices we make daily. Basically, this episode is an invitation to just laugh, dream big, and hang out with us. And I couldn’t think of a better way to bring the podcast back than this. I’m so happy to be back in your ears, and I can’t wait to keep showing up for you. Have you ever had one of those weeks where your to-do list just stares at you like, “Yeah… you’re never finishing me”? Same. Between work, life, family, endless responsibilities, and trying to remember what sleep feels like (hiii mom life!), it can feel hard to even think about making time for your photography dreams, let alone actually work towards them. Here’s the thing though, no matter how busy life feels, you can make space for your photography and your dreams. You just need a way to carve out time, even when it feels like there’s none left. And trust me, I know the feeling—wanting to do everything but somehow doing nothing—you blink and suddenly it’s 10 p.m. and you’re staring at your phone like, ‘Wait, where did the day go?’ That’s why, in this week’s podcast episode, we’re talking about exactly that—how to turn those overwhelming, anxious feelings into action. Spoiler Alert: It’s not about having more time, it’s about using the time you’ve got. Here’s a little sneak peek of what we’re talking about: How to stop feeling like a deer in headlights when you look at your to-do list and start actually moving forward The magic of setting one big, bold goal that gets you excited—and then breaking it down into manageable steps How to find your “golden hours” and use them to make serious progress (even if it’s just 15 minutes at a time!) This isn’t about adding more to your plate—it’s about finding freedom in the small, intentional steps that get you closer to your dreams. And the best part? It’s not about perfection. It’s about showing up for yourself, consistently, even when life feels too busy. You don’t have to wait for the “perfect moment” to chase your photography dreams. The perfect moment is right now. Every small step you take adds up to something bigger. So if you’re ready to turn that busy, overwhelming feeling into something productive and meaningful, this episode is for you. Social media used to feel SO fun. I mean, think back to the days when we’d just take a photo with our iphone, slap the Valencia filter on it and call it a day. It was so simple back then, so pure... But then came the algorithm... And with it, the never ending demand for MORE! More likes, more followers, more content… more, more, more! It kinda becomes exhausting, doesn’t it? As photographers, we pour our hearts into our work, only to feel like we're constantly chasing something that keeps moving further away. And then you add in the constant stream of heartbreaking news every time you open the app—the world seemingly on fire—it can make sharing your art feel almost pointless. It’s hard not to wonder if what we create even makes a difference when the world feels so heavy. Maybe you’ve been feeling it too, and if so, it's important to remember that art has the power to bring light, hope, and connection—even when it feels like everything is falling apart. Your creativity deserves to be seen, and it IS possible to reconnect with the joy that brought you to social media in the first place. And I’m sharing all about it in today’s podcast episode, we’re talking… finding that spark again making social media work for you, what’s been making me feel disconnected from IG and how I’m bringing that joy back how to stay true to yourself and your craft, even when the world feels like it’s falling apart THE PHOTOGRAPHER'S PATH REOPENS FALL 2024. Well, hiiiiiiii friend! 👋 It’s been a while, but I’m back in your inbox…and so is The Photographer’s Podcast. 🥹 But, in all honesty, I’m actually not really back. Not the whole way, at least. Because this whole becoming a mom thing has changed me, and I’m not the same person anymore. Who am I? I’m not quite sure yet, but I do know I feel different. I’m a different business owner, a different photographer, a different wife, a different human. And, most importantly, mom to two little angel babies. So, again, Hi! I’m here and the podcast is back, and I’m so excited to be showing up for you in this way again. And before I say any more I need to say thank you.Thank you, thank you, thank you for being here too, and allowing me to take this pause. I can’t tell you how much it means, and how thankful I am to each and every person in this incredible, beautiful community. To kick off disappearing from the world for a while (and new-era-of-Nicole), I’m sharing a very honest deep dive into the last 9 months of my life on today’s episode. I’m baaaaaackkkk (with two new best friends) ... You heard that right, The Photographer’s Podcast is BACK! But before we get into it, I want to thank you for being here, for allowing me this season of rest as I adjust to this new mom life. I’d be lying if I said I was actually adjusted by now. This is a process that’s gonna take time, and I’m enjoying the freedom and flexibility I have as a photographer to take it all in without having to rush back into work. So, thank you. Being a photographer who’s in control of their own schedule, flexibility and freedom, is truly a gift. And I don’t take that lightly. I wanted to properly kick things off by welcoming TPP alumni Claudia Segui to the podcast! Claudia is an incredible wedding photographer originally from Cuba who’s currently living in South Florida. She is a mom of two, a wife, an inspiring artist and a hilarious, welcoming and talented photographer. Claudia never imagined she would become a photographer. She spent most days in the courtroom working as a stenographer. But when she found herself going through a tough time, feeling stressed out about her day job, her husband suggested photography as a release. After receiving a camera as a christmas gift, she was hooked, until she tried to use it… “I thought the camera was broken, I was like… it has to be, I can’t be that bad.” Then Claudia joined The Photographer’s Path… and everything changed. Today, she’s sharing exactly how much that Christmas gift changed her life. Claudia is a perfect example of what happens when you follow your inspiration. In this episode, she talks about: ➡️ How she booked her first wedding of 2024 in Hawaii ➡️ What she does to stand out as a photographer ➡️ How she breaks the ice with new clients to ensure a smooth wedding day ➡️ What she did to find her niche and style ➡️ Advice for aspiring photographers, and so much more... Most photographers at one point or another have been hit with the dreaded question… “Hey, do you think you could send me the raw files from our shoot?!” It’s like a dagger in every photographer's heart… We’re immediately plagued with questions like… Did they hate the photos? Did they hate the editing? Did they hate the colors?! Do they hate ME?! It’s enough to make us spiral out of control. But it doesn’t have to be like that. I’ve experienced this question several times throughout my career and I’ve happily given clients my raw files, and I’ve happily NOT given clients my raw files. It’s a complicated question with so much to unpack, and it’s something many of my students in The Photographer’s Path have asked me about. So today I’m sharing my insight with you… Inside the episode you’ll find: Examples of what you can say when a client asks this question What this question really means about you as a photographer Advice on how to clearly communicate with your clients Tips on how to prevent this from happening again I’ve also got some big news I’m sharing in the episode as well News that involves our new social media course and how we’re gonna be approaching the podcast for the next two months... Get ready for the therapy session you didn’t realize you needed today! I’m so excited to be sharing an Instagram Live I had last month with the amazing Jordan Stratton, an alumni from The Photographer’s Path. Jordan is an incredible wedding photographer from Oklahoma and I can’t wait for you to get to know her today. Jordan started TPP in Fall of 2022. A few weeks after joining, she quit her full-time job of 8 years to pursue photography. Talk about a MAJOR CHANGE right?! Some of you might be sweating just thinking about this transition. But Jordan didn’t just blindly quit, she knew what she was doing. She quit her full-time job to work part-time while she actively pursued her photography dreams at the same time. But the best part?! She quit her part-time job and it only took her 8 months to become a FULL-TIME WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER! WHAT!?! Jordan's story is such an inspiration because it shows that there are so many different paths to take that can lead to your dreams and that not any one journey is the same as the next. You can make your dreams happen in a way that works for you. So, if photography is a dream in your heart, but quitting your day job seems out of reach, I hope this episode inspires you and shows you what’s possible when you say yes!! If I could have told myself a year ago that today I'd be pregnant with 2 biscuits, welcoming an incredible new group of students into TPP, and sitting on my deck outside my cabin in Big Sur on MY BABYMOON, I’d have burst into tears. It’s all I wanted, you know? And it is STILL what I want. I’m so grateful, and so thankful, and so looking forward to what life has in store coming up. But, guess what? As it happens, I’m burned out. Fulfilled? 10000% Yesssss. But exhausted and burned out? Yusssss. Which is why Dustin and I are in Big Sur right now for a little babymoon and a little refresher, and I feel lighter already. As you read this, I’m probably eating a donut, sitting on the redwood deck, listening to the birds enjoying a crisp, quiet morning. Or maybe we’re having dinner on the cliffs, watching the sunset. Or maybe I’m zoning out listening to the sound of the dirt under our feet on hikes and the birds in the trees… whatever it is I’m taking a breath. I’m letting myself take a break and let nature fill me back up. Because that’s what we have to do sometimes. Which is why this week I thought it was the perfect time to dive deep into burnout on this week’s episode of the podcast. Because here’s the thing: Even though we LOVE the work we do — burnout still exists. And we owe it to ourselves to know how to support ourselves, to connect back to the things we love, and to feel better. So on this episode, you’ll hear: My own experience(s) — because there are several, trust me — with burnout How to zone in on your priorities (and align your life and business with them) A reminder that it’s okay feel burnout, it doesn’t mean photography isn’t meant for you And, more than anything, I hope this episode reminds you that you owe yourself MORE than living a life where your tank is always on empty and your lights are always flickering. Because you do. Please don’t sell yourself short of that, okay? Yes, you read that right. I dunno about you, but lately I've been feeling exhaused. I don't know if it's pregnancy exhaustion, work exhaustion, end of summer exhaustion, or all of the above ... but I've been tired. So today, I thought it'd be fun to change the pace around here a little bit... Today I'm sharing an epic adventure from the most challenging/dangerous experience I've ever encountered while location scouting. *hint* - poisonous sea snake, komodo dragons and getting lost at sea. In this episode, we're diving deep into the importance of location scouting and the preparation that needs to take place BEFORE your photoshoots. Location Scouting is an important part of the planning process that many photographers overlook—don't be one to skip this critical element! Today we're chatting with The Photographer’s Path Alumni, Jennifer Morris. It’s time for a raw honest conversation about life, business, and the process of leaving her full-time job of 10 years to become a photographer. Jenni is an amazing lifestyle photographer — she shoots families, newborns and portraits. She is all about authenticity and capturing life’s most precious moments. But Jenni's story didn’t come without its ups and downs. One in particular was in May of 2022, when Jenni was asked to set up a booth at an event to offer some mini sessions, she had an entire backdrop set up, she was ready, she was excited, she thought this was going to be a big moment for her and… no one signed up. "I was posting about it saying this is going to be so great. And no one signed up, I was so embarrassment.”That’s when Jenni realized, and these are the pivotal moments in a photographers career, the moments where you can choose to keep going or give up." This “failure” quickly became one of the most pivotal moments in Jenni’s career. “If I would have stopped at that moment I would not be here.” Fast forward to March of 2023, Jenni signed up for The Photographer’s Path and only FIVE MONTHS later she quit her job of 10 YEARS as a dental hygienist to become a FULL-TIME Photographer! Talk about transformation! If you’re feeling stuck at your current job, wondering if photography is something that’s right for you, I hope this episode gives you hope for what’s possible when you believe in yourself and go after your dreams. Over the years, I’ve learned that the littlest, tiniest moments are often the ones that spur the biggest, most massive impacts in life. From seemingly small decisions to unintended ones, the moments like that tend to define who we are and what we do — and it’s why we have to, have to, haveeee to start saying YES. Today I brought someone very special onto the podcast, and I can’t WAIT for you to get to know her! Meet Photographer’s Path Alumni, Claudia Melian. Claudia is an incredible wedding photographer, originally from the Canary Islands and currently living in Connecticut. She is a true artist — her work is timeless, hypnotizing and never ceases to capture the attention of its viewers. Shortly before joining The Photographer’s Path, Claudia fell in love with photography but wasn’t really sure where that path could take her. She didn’t know what she wanted to do, she just knew she loved taking photos. Well, within 4 months of joining TPP Claudia booked her first wedding, and within 1 year of signing up for our course she was officially a full-time wedding photographer (taking on her first wedding season all on her own)! She created a snowball effect that totally transformed her life, and we’re talking all about it in today’s episode. Claudia is a perfect example of what can happen when you take the leap and go after your dreams even when you’re unsure of where it might take you. In this episode, she talks about: ➡️ How DMing strangers to help build her portfolio led to booking her first couples shoot ... ➡️ Tips for staying calm and in the moment during stressful shoot environments ... ➡️ What inspires her to create images unique to her ... ➡️ Advice when shoots don’t go as planned (insert wedding horror stories) ... ➡️ Advice for aspiring photographers, and so much more... If you’ve been thinking about taking it to the next level with your photography but the fear has been holding you back, I hope you'll give this episode a listen. It’s time to see for yourself what’s possible when you go after your dreams.
