Cork-based band Ways of Seeing released their second album The Inheritence of Fear on October 10. Singer and guitarist James O'Donnell talks about his long road to the album, from starting out alongside Eoin 'Talos' French a decade and a half ago to Dear Desert before a years-long estrangement from music. We talk about how he came back to music, his health issues such as losing his voice and tinnitus, literature and influences on The Inheritence of Fear. Dublin producer Rory Sweeney released his second album Old Earth on October 24. Written between Dublin, Manchester, Letterkenny and Sligo, the record draws on Stone Tape Theory - the idea that ghosts and hauntings are echoes imprinted into the land. Old Earth explores memory, history and the esoteric in the information age, and features a stacked cast including RÓIS, Saoirse Miller, Risteárd Ó hAodha, Emby, Emily Beattie, Curtisy, Ahmed With Love, Roo Honeychild and Ushmush, among others. Dublin-born, Cork-based artist Laura Elizabeth Hughes released her debut album Knots & Echoes on October 3. Having started out by uploading Lana Del Rey covers to YouTube, Laura released a steady stream of singles over the years, collaborations with Cian '1000 Beasts' Sweeney and co-wrote one of Ireland's entries to Eurovision. It's all led up to her debut album, a blend of spoken word with folk fused lyricism that showcases her delicate vocal harmonies alongside melodies that shimmer with emotion. Knots & Echoes moves through the push and pull of youth and memory, where home is as much an inner landscape as it is the people and places we return to, some of them not being easy places to exist in. These pieces follow the quiet imprints others leave behind, the knots we tie, carry, and slowly work loose, through to the self-reckoning that comes with trying to carve out a space of our own. Connection, loss, and the steady but tentatively open armed shift toward selfhood run through each track; the past shaping the contours of the present for better or worse. Eithne Ní Chatháin aka Inni-K released her fourth album Still a Day on September 26 via Green Willow Records. She describes it as her most sweeping and emotionally charged work yet, moving with a deeper gravity and startling clarity. Working with producer Seán Mac Erlaine (synths, woodwinds) and Matthew Jacobson (drums, percussion), Eithne wrote the album in the aftermath of a breakup. She says: “Songs help. These songs really helped me - they accompanied me through a very emotionally difficult time. I wrote this album because I needed to more than anything." It is music stocked with experience and steeped in flow, alive with the invisible direction life takes. This special episode of The Point of Everything pays tribute to the late Eoin French aka Talos, who passed away in August 2024 at the age of 36. A brilliant musician, Talos released three albums - Wild Alee in 2017, Far Out Dust in 2019, and Dear Chaos in 2022 - as well as a posthumous EP with Atli Orvarsson called Sun Divider and posthumous album with Olafur Arnalds, entitled A Dawning. He was also part of the Sounds from a Safe Harbour team. At this year’s festival, the opening concert Remembering Talos brought friends, collaborators, and family together at Cork Opera House. In this episode, you’ll hear memories of Eoin and reflections on his artistry from Loah, Christof Van Der Ven, Sam McNicholl, Ye Vagabonds, Nick Raynor, and Brian Dillon. Ronan Kealy aka Junior Brother, returns to The Point of Everything to talk about his extraordinary third album The End, released September 5 on Pete Doherty’s Strap Originals label. The album was recorded almost entirely solo, with only a guest appearance from Lankum’s Ian Lynch on Uilleann pipes, but its sound is expansive and band-like, rooted in Irish tradition while reaching into something stranger and more contemporary. In this conversation, Junior Brother reflects on his time in Dublin’s music scene, how folklore and storytelling seep into his songwriting, and the role of collaboration in shaping his work. He also touches on themes of love and life, the visual worlds of his music videos, and the childhood stories that continue to fire his imagination. The result is an album that connects the past and present, the personal and the mythical, into something both timeless and unsettlingly current. TRM (formerly known as The Redneck Manifesto) release their sixth album Grushy via Dublin's Ten Spot Records on Friday, September 5. Comprising seven tracks, they say they found a new creative surge - a different pulse yet from the same wellspring - when making the album. Currently a three piece (though swelling to six when playing live), Niall Byrne, Matty Bolger and Richie Egan have been playing together for nearly 30 years. Aaron Smyth aka A Smyth released his second album Hello Goliath via Lover Records on June 13. He joins to talk about previous band Vann Music and feeling "blacklisted" in the music industry. From there, we talk about A Smyth's journey, with a deep focus on songwriting and simply just trying to get better at it. Working with producer Darragh Nolan was key and he also became a dad - how did that affect him personally and musically; he also explains how his son should have a co-writing credit on the opening track on Hello Goliath. Texas-born, Laois-raised, London-based artist Kean Kavanagh returns to talk about his debut album The County Star. An introspective work, it finds him examining all those sides of his being: USA, Ireland, and London as he adopts the dual persona of a cowboy county star/GAA county star. Kean, who many will know as a close collaborator of Kojaque (they co-founded Soft Boy Records) released his debut project Dog Person in 2020. He suffered a vocal injury on tour with Kojaque in 2022 and had to undergo vocal therapy and relearning how to sing. It's something he examined on the 2023 EP Wrestling Music. It is also inherent on this album. We talk about all this and more in a 40-minute chat. We talk about community, traditional music and GAA, making videos with Kojaque starring comedian Peter McGann, collaborating with Karma Kid and Baz Kaye in making the record, and why he's not counting Dog Person as his debut release.
