The Powell Movement

Sid Pattison is a heli ski guide,  an Everest veteran, and an all around badass,  but what makes Sid different is who he is. Sid has the rare combination of a magnetic personality that lights up any situation, along with the ability to connect with every person he comes across, from the janitor to the CEO. These unique human skills, combined with his beast-like ability in the field, has created a fast lane in life that's allowed Sid to leapfrog past more accomplished peers. He's skipped some traditional steps on his way to things like guiding Everest, to his upcoming buy into North Cascade Heli Ski, but he doesn't cut corners.  While nothing that Sid does is traditional, it's always memorable and it eventually works out. Seattle and Jackson Hole are the focus of this different Christmas episode.  In Seattle, I checked out "The Common Line" snowboard event (which was incredible!!) and I talked to a few legends who stand sideways. After that, I caught up with skier and recent avalanche survivor, Adam U, before he played a punk rock show with his band Krontonamo. A couple days later, I traveled to Jackson Hole with the Outside Life crew to emcee an event and while I was there, I caught up with some more forward-facing legends.  It's a different episode that I think you'll like. Andrew Pollard is one of those kids that grew up at Alta and had the mountain as his babysitter/playground.  And while it took Andrew a little longer to become a name in the ski industry--compared to his pro skier friends and classmates, Andrew eventually made it to the top.  But what's different and cool about Andrew's story is that he's not just a skier; he's also, an artist, a DJ, freeride coach, and in the podcast, he has no filter.  All of this makes for a fun episode and Andrew's little sister Jackie asks the Inappropriate Questions. Shawn Robertson is up there with the most naturally gifted athletes I've ever worked with. At 13, he was throwing an 80 mph fastball and dominating team sports, then he found inline and rode that rocketship. Emily Childs is a helicopter pilot, and while that's pretty rad, her side gig, being a pro skier who travels the world in search of deep powder and insane lines, is even more badass. Peter Mehrhof was an early part of the "New School" ski movement but in the long run, Peter cared more about school than being a pro skier. Coming up in Mammoth, Peter was champion water skier and a fast ski racer who eventually made a pivot to the park and pipe and in no time was on the K2 Factory Team. And then Pete chose college and disappeared form skiing, only to resurface behind a boat and a desk in the world of wakeboarding. Damon Iwanaga was born to race flat track motorcycles, just like his dad. Eventually, he graduated to moto and his life path was set, he was going to turn pro and dominate the world of Supercross. That dream doesn't work out for many people and Damon eventually found himself in community college figuring out life. Kimmy Fasani is a trailblazing snowboarder who, not by choice, made a huge difference in women's sports.  Kimmy went from "Rider of the Year" to becoming a mom and when we last podcasted, the theme was, "will my sponsors stick by me?".
