Lisa is joined by Alessandra Upton, podcaster and recently qualified architect to discuss the importance of mentoring during the process of becoming an architect and beyond, and how to access mentoring either formally or informally. Professionals are only as good as their training, and in the UK architecture is one of the longest and costliest routes to a professional career. It’s tough to become an architect, and that’s without any of the social or economic hurdles that non-traditional candidates face, so full credit to all those who qualify. This podcast is aimed at Part 3 students about to commence their studies in a COVID-changed economy and workplace. Pride Road Franchise grew out of Founder Lisa Raynes’ refusal to accept that there was only one way for a woman to have an architecture career and a family life. Pride Road is building its network of franchisees across the UK with the aim of providing rewarding careers for ambitious architects who can’t find the right role for them and in opening their own business want to retain the support of team. A key element of Pride Road busines model is to ensure that each Franchisee has the coaching support to help smooth out the business bumps along the way. Lisa has been both a mentor and a mentee – at the same point in time – and has a unique perspective to share. https://www.prideroadfranchise.co.uk   Alessandra Upton is a recently qualified architect specialising in residential and commercial architecture and interior design. Her interests are in sustainability and the genius loci, which guide her design intent and professional approach. Alessandra is currently hosting a new podcast show called “Archetypical: an affable adventure in architectural analysis”, which explores architectural history & theory. https://feed.podbean.com/archetypical/feed.xml Twitter: @archetypicaluk
Lisa Raynes, Pride Road Founder and CEO, chats to Chicago based Lira Luis RIBA. Both Lisa and Lira – the former based in Manchester, UK the latter based in Chicago, US – are joyful networkers and members of the RIBA which in 2020 was acknowledged as a Superbrand. Hear them chat about how networking skills – used both in online and offline communities – have helped them to develop their own practices and what they enjoy about the process. When you have a high-energy career or you run your own business it can be difficult to understand where to focus your time. It starts by thinking about where you can add and also gain value as you make strategic decisions about which memberships to join, events to attend and people to engage. Pride Road Franchise grew out of Founder Lisa Raynes' refusal to accept that there was only one way for a woman to have an architecture career and a family life. Pride Road is building its network of franchisees across the UK with the aim of providing rewarding careers for ambitious architects who can’t find the right role for them and in opening their own business want to retain the support of a team. A key element of Pride Road business model is to ensure that each Franchisee has the self-confidence and skills to effectively market themselves and their businesses. Lisa Raynes got started in business by necessity after being made redundant for the second time as her family grew. She built her practice in the domestic sector, and then invested to turn her business into one that other ambitious architects wanting work/life balance can buy into. She’s had a seat on the RIBA Council (2015-18), been Chair of Women in Property NW and founded Manchester Curious, an urban architecture outreach festival. https://www.prideroadfranchise.co.uk Lira Luis FRIBA, FRSA, NCARB, CEM, LEED AP, formed an architecture career for the benefit of others through research and innovation. As Taliesin Fellow she revived Frank Lloyd Wright’s underutilised System-Built Homes, a precedent to Jacobs House (UNESCO site) — resulting in reduction of blight in a disadvantaged NJ city block. Her Leapfrog Project’s “Living Ball” enabled self-sufficient empowerment of extreme climate survivors through geodesic constructions. She developed new architectural solutions to help island nations overcome rapidly rising sea levels in her Magnetic Levitation Experiment. In 2020 both the RIBA and Royal Society of Arts elected her as Fellow.
Tune in to hear Lisa and Jason, from the perspective of being mentors and mentees, discuss the powerpack that is self-confidence. So you’ve got your own architecture practice, and there’s a multitude of responsibilities resting on you, some play to your strengths, others not so much. Common challenges can be networking effectively, confidently expressing your value to clients, or fielding criticism (unfair or fair) with grace. Learn about the simple steps they take to allow them to turn challenges into opportunities and relish being in business - what is your question for them? Pride Road Architects is founded on the principles of inclusivity, sustainability, and innovation. Our vision is for architecture to be a meaningful career for the missing 21% of women who study but don’t ever work in the profession. (UCAS gender split in 2017 when studying architecture is F:M 49:51, gender split ARB registered architects 2018 F:M 28:72). And to provide careers that can sustain rather than strain family life. In 2010, Founder and CEO Lisa Raynes turned her successful sole practice into a franchise that other ambitious architects wanting work/life balance can buy into. She’s had a seat on the RIBA Council (2015-18), been Chair of Women in Property NW and founded Manchester Curious, an urban architecture outreach festival. Jason Boyle is a Chartered Architect with over 20 years of experience in design. He has designed many different building types; from residential to cancer centres, office buildings through to Nuclear facilities. In 2017 Jason became the youngest Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects (FRIBA) and in 2018 he was awarded Fellowship of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA). Jason is currently the RIBA Ambassador for Civil Infrastructure in the UK and has lectured internationally on the future of architecture and technology. Jason was a past member of the RIBA North West Regional Council and is currently working on one of the 3 UK Nuclear mega projects for the UK government. Jason spends his spare time mentoring young professionals using a holistic approach. https://www.prideroadfranchise.co.uk
Join in to hear Lisa and Rion’s tips for avoiding common mistakes and growing a successful business doing work that you love – and find out why Lego makes an appearance in the Pride Road marketing mix. Pride Road Franchise’s vision is to provide businesses for ambitious, time-poor architects that can sustain rather than strain family life. We do this by innovating how to deliver architecture in the domestic market. The impact is disruptive to architecture business models, providing a third option in addition to employment and self-employment. Rion Willard is the co-founder and Director of the Business of Architecture UK, a business consultancy helping Architects win meaningful, impactful and profitable work with creative client acquisition & business development strategies. He is the host of the Business of Architecture UK podcast, an interview show, where prominent guests, business leaders and architects share tips and strategies for success in architecture. I also rent properties short term for filming and advertising. I have a few other cool ideas in the making, such as a dog hotel, and really would like to take my workshops for entrepreneurs to another level.   Last but not least, I am a mum of three: two girls and a boy.    In 2021, I graduated from the 10K Small Businesses Growth Programme run by Oxford University and Goldman Sachs, a free programme that I would highly recommend to anyone. I am a business mentor for the ‘Help to Grow’ government programme.    I’m currently writing a book ‘The Immigrant Entrepreneur: 21 Practical Hacks for Business Resilience.’ The book tells the story of my journey to the United Kingdom, where I arrived with very basic English, without knowing anyone, and with barely enough money to survive for a few days. Despite these challenges, I managed to build several businesses from scratch, and I believe that if I could do it, anyone can.   Would love to connect with you all!   Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/daryasimanovich/   LinkedIn: https://uk.linkedin.com/in/daryas   ABOUT Pride Road Architecture Franchise   The Pride Road Franchise grew out of Founder Lisa Raynes’ refusal to accept that there was only one way for a woman to have an architecture career and a family life.
