episode #143, scanning id's: i always show my u.s. passport instead of a driver's license because most places can't scan the passport in their machines, which are set up for dl sized id's. they then just write the pertinent info from the passport down and my documents are not scanned. quite a few times, i have been told that they will not accept my passport because they cannot scan it. i then read to them a slip of paper i keep in my passport, quoting the statute that states that it is a violation of federal law to refuse to accept my passport as proof of identity and citizenship. "CFR TITLE 42, chapter IV, subchapter C, part 435, subpart E, section 435.407: 42 CFR 435.407(a): Primary evidence of citizenship and identity. The following evidence MUST BE ACCEPTED as satisfactory documentary evidence of both identity and citizenship: (1) A U.S. passport. The Department of State issues this. A U.S. passport does not have to be currently valid to be accepted as evidence of U.S. citizenship, as long as it was originally issued without limitation." this means they have to accept even your expired passport, so go ahead and pay the fee to have that old passport mailed back to you when you renew. problems do come up, in that all across america, clerks and such have never had a passport as ID shown them, and have never even seen a passport. often they say "nope, has to be a DL". i have walked away without service several times, but that beats having scans of my DL trailing behind me in stores and businesses, small and large, all over the country.

Forget Tutanota also. They are not crypto friendly, which is a red flag.

Don't use Protonmail guys, proof was shared last year that they were working with a data mining company. Confirmed honeypot. We are naive to think that Switzerland is private, anything in the USA or 1st world Europe is going to turn on you at the first sign of trouble.

My takeaway...it's OK to look into your date via Google, LinkedIn, etc but if they do it to you, they're a creeper. One guest complained some did it to her then goes off about how much research she conversely does. Well which is it? OK or not OK?
