We debate rules that Formula 1 should ditch in the latest episode of The Race F1 Podcast. Samarth Kanal and Ben Anderson join Edd Straw to state the case for rules that should be ditched and, in some cases, replaced. It will come as no surprise to regular listeners that the fastest lap point is among the regulations that is scrutinised, although that's just one of the ideas that's discussed. Rules related to car liveries, track limits, overtaking, superlicences and much more are also tackled. Want extra podcast content? Join The Race Members' Club on Patreon! We reflect on Daniel Ricciardo's Formula 1 legacy in the latest edition of The Race F1 Podcast. Special guest Michael Lamonato joins Ben Anderson and host Edd Straw to discuss the reaction in Australia to Ricciardo being replaced by Liam Lawson, and what's been learned from what Red Bull's Helmut Marko and Lawson himself have revealed about the process. We then delve into Ricciardo's post-Red Bull career, explaining why his Renault stint shouldn't be lumped in with his McLaren and RB struggles, as well as the limitations that were exposed in his final seasons. Ricciardo's peaks are also discussed, particularly in terms of the strengths that made him one of the best in the middle stages of the second decade of the 21st century. And we also ask whether Ricciardo was unfortunate not to win a world championship in that era, and the extent to which his later career tarnishes his reputation. Want extra podcast content? Edd Straw is joined by Scott Mitchell-Malm and Ben Anderson to discuss the news that Daniel Ricciardo has been axed by RB, with Liam Lawson replacing him for the rest of 2024. They discuss why Red Bull have made this move now, whether Ricciardo has a future in F1, what Lawson will bring to the team, and whether the New Zealander's opportunity should be seen as an audition for another seat in 2025... Edd Straw is joined by Glenn Freeman and Mark Hughes to tackle another batch of questions sent in by The Race Members' Club. Top of the selection is a question about whether Red Bull will really make a move for Mercedes' George Russell, after Christian Horner made comments to that effect in Singapore. There are also a host of questions about the driver market, including whether the impressive Franco Colapinto might end up driving for Sauber or even RB next season. Plus, Mark gives a detailed explanation as to why tyre behaviour is still the hardest thing to predict in F1... Want extra podcast content and to ask questions on the show? Edd Straw and Mark Hughes (both in Singapore) are joined by Scott Mitchell-Malm to review the Singapore Grand Prix, and a race in which Lando Norris left his rivals in his wheel tracks. They explain why Norris and McLaren were so quick and whether this win really does mean a title tilt is now a realistic possibility. They also discuss, amongst other topics, the community service order Max Verstappen was handed for swearing (and his subsequent protest), and an emotional weekend for Daniel Ricciardo, which could go down as his last in F1. Plus, as usual, there are lots of questions about the race to answer from The Race Members' Club. Want extra podcast content and to ask questions on the show? Join The Race Members' Club on Patreon! There are also questions about Franco Colapinto's F1 future, the proposed rookies race at the end of the season, and Red Bull's performance slump, amongst many others. Edd Straw is joined by Mark Hughes and Ben Anderson to discuss what is arguably F1's biggest non-driver signing of all time: Adrian Newey to Aston Martin. They discuss why one of the greatest technical minds in F1 history, who could have joined more-or-less any team he fancied, has made the decision to join Aston Martin. They also explain how Aston owner Lawrence Stroll got his man - and what he can expect for his money. Edd, Mark and Ben also discuss the particulars of Newey’s Aston role and why it’s different to what many expected, plus they talk in detail about the impact Newey might have, including whether he’s the missing piece in Aston’s ‘galactico’ team structure, how his arrival might motivate Fernando Alonso, the pressure on him to deliver, and why rival teams might be fearing what he will bring to the table in both the short- and long-term... Edd Straw is joined by Ben Anderson and F1 TV presenter and author Will Buxton for a lively edition of the pod in which - inspired by a video clip of Will that went viral on social media, gaining more than 1.6 million views - we debate whether McLaren should be actively favouring Lando Norris over Oscar Piastri, given the Briton's outside shot at the world title. The short- and long-term implications of such a move are discussed, but will our trio find a consensus position? Want extra podcast content? Join The Race Members' Club on Patreon! After that, we bring you the latest on F1's latest flexi wing drama, before diving into a bumper crop of questions from the Race Members' Club, including whether George Russell must now be considered a better qualifier than Lewis Hamilton, whether McLaren disharmony is inevitable, and whether James Vowles is doing a good job at Williams or not. Two huge F1 debuts are coming up at the Italian Grand Prix this weekend - with Mercedes protege Kimi Antonelli getting his hands on the team's 2024 car and Franco Colapinto making his race debut following a huge shake-up at Williams. The Race F1 Podcast turns first to Antonelli, with Edd Straw joined by Ben Anderson and Scott Mitchell-Malm to discuss how significant an outing this could be for a driver who seems destined for a 2025 Mercedes F1 graduation - and the potential headache Mercedes has on its hands for 2026 if Toto Wolff picks his interest in signing Max Verstappen back up again next year. But it's Williams that has made a huge decision between the Dutch and Italian GPs as it finally lost patience with Logan Sargeant - axing him from its line-up and giving its academy driver Colapinto a shot alongside Alex Albon for the final nine races of the season. That wildcard choice and how impressive Colapinto was on his F1 weekend debut in FP1 at Silverstone earlier this year, the timing of the decision and what that says about how much Williams wanted things to work out with Sargeant, and how his situation ultimately became untenable are all covered. Ferrari's prospects heading to its home race at Monza, McLaren's constructors' championship favourite status, and whether racing will be better in 2026 despite predicted slower laptimes are among a bonus set of questions from The Race Members' Club that are tackled too. Lando Norris could hardly have made a bigger statement of intent as F1 returned from its summer break, as the McLaren driver clinched his second grand prix win at the Dutch GP - and in doing so ended Max Verstappen's winning streak on home soil in crushing fashion. But why was Norris so dominant at Zandvoort? Edd Straw is joined by Mark Hughes and Scott Mitchell-Malm on The Race F1 Podcast to answer that question and plenty more as the constructors' championship battle between Red Bull and McLaren got tighter still. As well as looking at how Charles Leclerc earned Ferrari an unexpected podium, Sergio Perez's form and Alpine's 'victory' in the midfield battle, there's a host of questions from The Race Members' Club on topics including the quality of Norris's drive, whether Red Bull's tyre management has got worse as the year has gone on, and Logan Sargeant's precarious position at Williams. We’ve got something a little bit different for you on this episode. Earlier this year, to mark the 40th anniversary of Prodrive, Edd Straw paid a visit to its Banbury HQ to interview its co-founder and chairman David Richards. Many F1 fans will remember Richards through his time with the Benetton and BAR F1 teams, and may know that he’s currently chairman of Motorsport UK. But he also came very close to bringing Prodrive - so successful in rallying, touring cars and sportscars - into F1 on two occasions. In fact, you could argue that Prodrive is the best team to never race in F1… We hope you enjoy Edd’s wide-ranging chat with David Richards, who has many a tale to tell about F1 in the 2000s and 2010s. Lando Norris may be second in the world championship, but McLaren's form driver of late has been Oscar Piastri. Has the Australian's speed unsettled Norris? That's one of the questions tackled by Edd Straw, Glenn Freeman and Mark Hughes on this episode of the pod. Other questions sent in by listeners from The Race Members' Club include whether George Russell has learned deal with the pressure of fighting for race wins, whether the teams have neared the development potential of these regulations, and whether Max Verstappen is any closer to ditching Red Bull for Mercedes... F1 may now be on its summer break, but its been a busy week of news, which Edd Straw and Scott Mitchell-Malm digest on this episode. First up, Scott brings us some fresh reporting on why Red Bull has chosen to stick with Sergio Perez (for now), and how it plans to help him find form again. After that, there's a look at what the Perez situation means for Red Bull's wider driver situation, before talk turns to the news that Red Bull team manager Jonathan Wheatley has been recruited to be Audi's new team principal. Why has Audi plumped for him, and what impact will his departure have on Red Bull? Edd and Scott answer those questions before turning their attention to Alpine, who have now installed Oliver Oakes as team principal and are set to announce Jack Doohan as Pierre Gasly's team mate for 2025. Edd Straw and Scott Mitchell-Malm jump on the pod to discuss Monday's breaking news that Carlos Sainz has committed his future to Williams. They explain why the Spaniard has opted for the Grove team over Sauber-Audi and Alpine, and consider whether Williams now have one of the strongest driver line-ups on the grid. They also discuss the news that Red Bull are sticking with Sergio Perez - for the foreseeable future at least - and explain what the Sainz news means for the rest of the driver market. Scott was spot on about the title being decided by a weird happening on track. Like someone having an off and an SC decides the title.
