Before moving to Vegas to cover the Golden Knights in their inaugural 2017 season, Gary Lawless was part of TSN’s Winnipeg Jets coverage. Lawless spoke on his experience covering the Golden Knights, the ‘nothing expires in the fridge’ cap approach of George McPhee & Kelly McCrimmon, and the perfect Game 6 win over the Stars that clinched the team’s 2nd appearance in the Stanley Cup Final. Plus, why Mark Stone is the ‘Larry Bird of Hockey’.
In Headlines, the Maple Leafs presumed hire of ex-Flames GM Brad Treliving leads things off, the guys examine what decisions are at the forefront of Treliving’s to-do list, and Ray explains why Mitch Marner should be a lot higher on the list than people think.
Head Coach vacancies are being filled around the NHL as Ray’s former line-mate Andrew Brunette was announced as the new Preds bench-boss. Ray discusses what Brunette brings to the teams he coaches and the first major decision by Barry Trotz. Trotz’ former team, the Washington Capitals, announced Spencer Carbery as their new HC; the guys look at the job ahead for one of the most coveted coaching candidates this year. Plus, the ongoing search for the new Calgary Flames HC, Gerard Gallant’s name emerging, and why Darryl Sutter’s contract might play a factor.
With the BIG DANCE just a few days away, the guys preview the Stanley Cup Final between the Florida Panthers and Vegas Golden Knights, the battle for which team will capture their first-ever championship, and the key factors of the matchup.
Kris Abbott joins the pod and talks the MYRIAD of options to bet the finals on Betano.ca. The over/under on OT games, Panthers players favoured for the Conn Smythe, and the Golden Knights slight edge to win are discussed. Plus, Stanley Cup picks, and the quick but close series that Ray expects.

Sam Bennett is an absolute MENACE to play against, and if you need evidence of that, look no further than THE HIT on Jaccob Slavin in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Final. Bennett spoke to Dregs on the monumental opportunity of advancing to the final round of the playoffs, the confidence a HOT Sergei Bobrovsky gives the Panthers, and Matthew Tkachuk's 'clutch' gene. Plus, his legendary playoff beard, and pro-golfer Brooks Koepka's 'P's' fandom.
In Headlines, the guys discuss the Florida Panthers clinching a Stanley Cup finals berth, and Matthew Tkachuk’s MVP calibre performance in the 3rd round. Game 4 of Panthers vs. Canes was not without controversy as a late Jordan Staal penalty resulted in the Tkachuk game-winner with 4.3 seconds left. Ray voices his displeasure in the call after a high-stick wasn’t called against the Panthers prior to the tripping penalty.
Jamie Benn may have just exited the Western Conference Finals as the Stars captain will sit for a 2-game suspension. The guys discuss Benn’s cross-check on Mark Stone, the decision by Benn to skip media scrums until the next day, and his strange comments on the obvious cross-check. Ray gives his ice-level-view of a disastrous Game 3 for the Stars (and their fans), and how Dallas can stave off elimination in Game 4.
The guys wrap headlines with news from around the NHL, including the Pittsburgh Penguins' interest in Kyle Dubas, if Brendan Shanahan is overstepping with his assurances to the ‘core-4’ in Toronto, and Craig Conroy’s first big decision as Flames GM.
Kris Abbott takes the episode off for a ‘working vacation’ and the guys chat Betano’s Stanley Cup odds. Ray has a front-row seat to the Vegas Golden Knights and thinks another sweep is in order. He also makes his pick for the winner in a prospective Panthers/Golden Knights final.

It’s ‘Viva Las Vegas’ for Ray as he continues his NHL on ESPN duties, however his luck ran out both on the golf-course and at the blackjack tables so he’ll be sticking to hockey for Episode 67. Plenty to discuss as Ray & Dregs serve up another instalment of the pod!
In Headlines, the guys delve into the OVERTIME filled Conference Final matchups. The Golden Knights are in great shape with two consecutive OT wins at home, Ray discusses the depth that’s served the team all season, Eichel’s growth as a 200 foot player, and the success of Bruce Cassidy’s defensive system.
In the Eastern Conference, a tight battle between the Hurricanes and Panthers heads south to Florida with the Panthers holding all the momentum, being up 2-0. Matthew Tkachuk seems to have struck a perfect balance of ‘mixing it up’ while staying composed for his team. The guys discuss the back-to-back OT hero, Panthers captain Sasha Barkov’s highlight reel goal, and Sergei Bobrovsky holding down the fort.
Dregs talks the expectation of news on the sale of the Ottawa Senators this week, and what he’s hearing on the presumed announcement of Craig Conroy as the new Flames GM. Plus, the bizarre Kyle Dubas departure from the Maple Leafs front-office, if Dubas would’ve been better off waiting to hold a presser, and Brad Treliving interviewing for the vacant GM position.
Kris Abbott returns from getting his money’s worth on a Caribbean cruise to discuss possible money ‘plays’ on Betano.ca. Kris eyes the ‘going to OT’ bet hitting at 100% so far in the Conference finals, and why it’s still a good play moving forward. Plus, Conn Smythe odds and and Bobrovsky/Tkachuk winning MVP paying out at better odds than a Panthers Stanley Cup victory.
In Ask R+D, the guys answer your Q’s, and give away FREE merch to question-askers. This week, listeners ask about the player psyche of facing a ‘hot’ goaltender, who has a bigger advantage when coaches face former teams, and Dregs gets some advice on his ‘blackfly’ problem.

Dregs was up bright and early putting in work for a top-shelf Father’s Day present, while Ray is getting set to cover the Western Conference Final for ESPN. The guys combine forces for another instalment of the pod!
In Headlines, the guys get you set for the FINAL FOUR in the NHL! A battle between ‘familiar foes’ takes place as the Carolina Hurricanes and Florida Panthers have a number of weird hockey connections, including that Panthers Head Coach Paul Maurice has coached the entire Canes coaching staff! Defence is a focal point as Ray stresses the importance for Brandon Montour to be a factor, and the towering Canes blue line which includes ageless vet Brett Burns.
In the Western Conference Final, Season 4 podcast guest Pete DeBoer is facing his former Vegas Golden Knights squad. DeBoer left no doubt that he has extra motivation for his Dallas Stars to beat the team that fired him. Another former Golden Knight, Evgeni Dadonov, is also discussed, and the guys marvel at ‘minute-muncher’ Miro Heiskanen; Ray compares the Finnish defender to a smooth-skating Hockey Hall of Famer.
Another blow to the Arizona Coyotes has the guys discussing the state of the franchise, possible destinations for re-location, and current Coyotes ownership. Ray draws a comparison to the MLB’s struggling Oakland A’s, and their move to Las Vegas.
GM situations in Edmonton and Toronto round-out Headlines as the guys discuss the emotion displayed by Maple Leafs GM Kyle Dubas, and Ken Holland’s ‘green banana’ comments.
While Kris Abbott is away, the guys still play! Ray & Dregs make their picks for the 2023 Stanley Cup Final. Ray emphasizes the impact the top-4 should have for the Canes, and agrees with oddsmakers on a lengthy battle on both sides of the bracket.
This week, in Ask R&D, the guys answer listener questions on if the NHL should adopt the IIHF shootout rules, the worst Stanley Cup playoff injuries players endured, a challenging New York golf course, and how the Leafs should handle Matt Murray’s contract.

Ray’s group chats were FIERY, as he stoked the flames on the Oilers and Leafs 2nd round exits. Along with Ray’s friends, many Canadians were disappointed in the results of the weekend, the Stanley Cup will yet again be awarded to an American team.
In Headlines, the guys cover Game 6 between the Oilers and Golden Knights, the play of Adin Hill in backstopping the Vegas win, Leon Draisaitl being unable to produce to the ridiculous standard he set early in the series, and if Bruce Cassidy out-coached Jay Woodcroft. Plus, sizing up the Oilers off-season, the lack of trust in their depth players, and the Campbell or Skinner question.
It’s another disappointing end for the Toronto Maple Leafs, losing to the Florida Panthers in 5-games. Ray explains why it’s imperative for the Leafs to have an answer to the Matthews question ahead of off-season planning. The guys discuss the many questions surrounding the Leafs including if the ‘core-4’ stay intact, the future of Kyle Dubas and Sheldon Keefe, and Brendan Shanahan’s plan for the future direction of the team.
Kris Abbott is jet-setting on vacation, so Ray & Dregs take a look at the Conn Smythe odds with the Conference Finals set to start this week. Ray makes his pick for Game 7 between the Stars and Kraken, and the Dallas player he thinks would win MVP if they capture the cup. Plus, the Panthers and Hurricanes series odds, the similar construction of both teams, and who Ray’s picking to win the ‘Flinstone-like’ battle.

Shane Hnidy brings his ‘golden-shoed’ pizzaz to the pod! The former NHL’er spoke to the guys after a CHARGED Game 4 between the Golden Knights and Oilers. Hnidy gave his thoughts on Pietrangelo’s slash on Draisaitl, an ‘old-school’ instigator penalty on Darnell Nurse, and the implications IF both players miss a pivotal Game 5. The Vegas Golden Knights broadcaster provided insight into the ‘style’ Bruce Cassidy likes his teams to play, and Hnidy’s high-school coaching career getting off to a PAINFUL start.
In Headlines, the guys discuss a rising temperature in the Edmonton/Vegas series, Ray says the ‘eye-test’ should call for suspensions to Pietrangelo and Nurse, and what's been a see-saw battle between the two Western Conference heavyweights.
Round 2 has seen a trend of high-scoring blowouts; the guys discuss their surprise at the unpredictability of every game. Bucking the trend, more 'playoff-normal' games between the Maple Leafs and Panthers. Leafs stave off a sweep thanks in-part to a stellar performance from Joseph Woll, Ray compares Woll to another young standout goalie in Akira Schmid.
Friend of the pod, Keith Jones, received BIG news with the announcement that he will be the new President for the Philadelphia Flyers. Dregs provides his insider knowledge of a ’close-to-the-vest’ hiring process, and what Jones will bring to a Flyers organization that needs a change-up.
Kris Abbott is on a ‘George Costanza’ vacation, so the guys are left to their own devices for what ‘action’ looks good on Betano.ca. A tempting over/under in what’s been a high-scoring 2nd round has Dregs thinking the trend changes, while Ray thinks the Kraken/Stars series will continue to be a goal-filled affair. Plus, the ever-changing Stanley Cup favourites, and if ‘juicy’ odds on a Leafs comeback are worth a bet.

Another day, another podcast from a hotel-room for Ray as he gets set for ESPN duties. However, a surly hotel neighbour was less than thrilled, making a guest appearance in supremely petty fashion, you don’t want to miss it!
In Headlines, the guys delve into the latest from around the NHL. Connor Bedard’s landing-spot is now clear as the Chicago Blackhawks won the Draft Lottery. The hype surrounding the lottery, twitterverse conspiracy theories, and pulling an ‘Eric Lindros’ are discussed.
A huge bounce-back win for the Vegas Golden Knights swings the momentum back in their favour, however, an injury to Laurent Brossoit leaves more question-marks in the Golden Knights’ crease.
Ahead of Canes/Devils, the guys discuss what’s been an unpredictable series thus far as New Jersey came out guns blazing in Game 3. Ray focuses in on Jordan Staal and what the Canes centre will have to do to quell the (now toothless) smile of Jack Hughes.
Plus, the depth players on the Toronto Maple Leafs being the best players on the team is a concern as the guys discuss a surprise Panthers team on the verge of sweeping the Leafs. Ray expresses his concern at Toronto’s stars, and the play of Mitch Marner needing to be better.

In Headlines, the guys discuss the Maple Leafs blowing a two-goal lead in a Game 2 loss to the Florida Panthers. Find out why Ray thinks the Panthers were handed a ‘get out of jail free’ card, and how the Leafs can prevent more ‘water bottle throwing’.
A rather bittersweet distinction is shared between Joe Pavelski and Leon Draisaitl as they each tallied 4-goals in a loss, the last player to score 4 in a playoff loss was… Ray Ferraro! Ray talks the 4-goal night back in the ’93 playoffs, and weighing a personal accomplishment with the team falling short.
The Golden Knights vs. Oilers might be as ‘can’t-miss’ a playoff series as they come! A goal-filled Game 1, Mark Stone’s effect on the Vegas lineup, and Stone’s bothersome back injury are discussed as the guys predict a long battle between the Western Conference heavyweights.

Today’s episode includes questions on favourite playoff moments, the J.C Tremblay ‘flip’ zone entry, and the (near-impossible) likelihood of a team trading the 2023 1st Overall Pick. Having spent 16 seasons with 6 different teams as an NHL player, ‘Edzo’ knows the game. But, did you know he’s also a horse-racing enthusiast?? In fact, the Seattle Kraken and NHL on TNT broadcaster actually started his TV career in horse-racing! In Headlines, the guys discuss Game 7 between the Devils and Rangers, Ray explains why Jacob Trouba’s MASSIVE hit on Timo Meier was clean, and the possibility of the NHL adopting International head contact rules. Plus, a disappointing end for a star-studded Rangers squad, splashy additions not making a difference, and if major changes are coming to New York.
Ray compares the Bruins collapse to his wife Cammi Granato’s 2002 USA hockey team’s run of dominance that came to an abrupt end; did a lack of ‘adversity’ play a factor in the Bruins demise? The firing of Calgary Flames head coach Darryl Sutter, the impact of player exit-meetings, and a disappointing season for the Flames rounds out Headlines.
Kris Abbott joins the pod and talks his ‘bank account’ reflecting a not-so-good average in his 1st round selections. However, it didn’t go much better for the guys in a WILD start to the NHL playoffs. The pod makes their Round 2 picks ahead of puck-drop tonight, and Kris lays out some under-the-radar bets that are worth a look on Betano.ca.

Ray is soaking up the Big Apple as he continues to cover the Rangers/Devils series for ESPN, and Dregs tees up EPISODE 60 of the pod from home!

After outscoring the Devils 10-2 in Game 1 & 2 wins, the Rangers have dropped 3-straight while being outplayed by a SURGING New Jersey squad. The guys talk New York’s inability to solve Akira Schmid, a SIZEABLE advantage for the Devils defence, and the potential for the Devils to takedown a talent-filled Rangers roster.
Plus, Freddy Anderson’s return to a low-scoring Canes vs. Isles battle, and if the Florida Panthers have opened the door enough for a chance to upset the Bruins.
Just when Kris Abbott decided to hedge his Lightning bet, the Bolts bounce-back, amidst an odds roller-coaster in Leafs/Lightning. Kris discusses the pivotal Game 5, an NJD/NYR series-shift and the implications for bettors, and the litany of NFL Draft bets available.

Is a 1-game suspension enough for Cale Makar, if Kraken forward Jared McCann misses the rest of the series? Ray compares the suspension to Michael Bunting’s as the Kraken tie the series at 2-2.
