Ollie Jaye is a veteran DJ whose rise to prominence came via a decade‑long residency at the iconic Hippo Club in Cardiff—one of the UK’s seminal hotspots for trance, hard‑house, and euphoric dance music.
Ollie helped shape the club’s fierce identity and championed the era’s signature sound: uplifting, relentless, and unapologetically massive. But Ollie’s not just about nostalgia, he still throws down with that same electricity. Case in point? This mix! He drops an expertly sequenced blend that feels like a hug and a hands-in-the-air moment.
This isn’t just a playlist. It’s a love letter to the '90s, where piano riffs, gospel vocals, and thunderous breakbeats collided under strobe lights and UV paint. Ollie curated it with the same instinct and passion that once packed the Hippo Club, only now it’s bottled for your headphones.
This is also a resurrection of Ollie's "Ode to Hippo" series he initially published a few years back. Do check out the Trance mixes if you can find them!
From Tin Tin Out to Dancin’ Divaz, CLS to JX, this mix is for anyone who’s ever danced with strangers at 3 a.m. and felt like they belonged.

In the neon-drenched underground of the 1990s, hard trance exploded like a warehouse rave on steroids, faster, louder, and unapologetically euphoric. Born from the fusion of German techno precision and acid-fueled intensity, it pushed BPMs to nosebleed levels and flooded dance floors with relentless energy. Think thunderous kick drums, snarling synth stabs, hypnotic buildups, and breakdowns so dramatic they made the ceiling feel like it was about to lift off.
Hard trance didn't just soundtrack the party, it was the party. From Frankfurt to London, Ibiza to Toronto, its adrenaline-pumping sound became a staple of late-night sets and all-night festivals. It gave ravers a second wind at 4 a.m. and inspired DJs to push the limits of sound system punishment. Its influence still echoes in today’s techno, hardstyle, and psytrance scenes, but nothing quite hits like the raw, unfiltered chaos of ‘90s hard trance. It wasn’t subtle, it was a full-body assault. And I loved it for that.
I was particularly partial to the more plucky-pad ran records over the euro-sounding riffs so I've spent some time cultivating as many of those cuts as I could for all you 90's rave fiends!
Let's go!

Founded in 1990 by Alex Simons and Red Jerry (real name Jeremy Dickens), Hooj Choons was born out of London’s underground club scene with one mission: to release forward-thinking dance music that didn’t give a damn about trends.
While Simons exited the label in the mid-90s, Red Jerry took the reins and led Hooj through its golden era—dropping genre-defining tracks that fused trance, house, and breakbeat into something deeper, darker, and smarter than the commercial charts could handle. Hooj sleeves became a mark of trust for DJs: if it was Hooj, it was going in the set.
The label built a cult following with artists like Tilt, Medway, Lustral, Solar Stone, Killahurtz, and Lost Tribe, and later earned iconic status with its tongue-in-cheek compilation series “Some of These Were Hooj.” Red Jerry’s own mixes and A&R instincts helped define what progressive dance music meant in the UK—and beyond.
This isn’t trance the way the mainstream remembers it. This is progressive trance.
In this mix, you'll hear meditative uplifts from Solar Stone, brooding grooves from Medway, twisted late-night spirals from LSG, and enough Red Jerry mixes to build a church. There are dubby versions, creeping Farmatronic edits, and vocal tracks that somehow felt more like mantras than lyrics.
This is music made for moments—not for festivals, but for back rooms, closed-eye sets, and headphone pilgrimages. Built from layers, driven by groove, and remembered by the heads who never needed glowsticks to get high.
Here it is, 2 hours of Hooj; 1991-1999 hits!

NEXT EPISODE: DEPECHE MODE
Just in time for the weekend - let's get some 90's trance going!
Additive Records was a UK-based sub-label of the legendary Positiva Records, and while it may not have had the flashiest branding, it played a critical role in shaping the underground-to-mainstream pipeline of late ’90s and early 2000s electronic music. Think of it as Positiva’s cooler, more discerning younger sibling — the one digging through crates while the big brother was cashing radio hits.
Where Positiva was known for massive crossover dance anthems and polished commercial smashes, Additive was the vinyl-only proving ground — a boutique imprint designed to test the club viability of more progressive and experimental tracks. If a release did well on Additive, chances were good it might graduate to a full-blown Positiva release with the marketing machine behind it.
This was music for DJs, pure and simple. High-quality 12” pressings, remixes that weren’t afraid to be 9 minutes long, and a catalogue full of gems that would heat up the dancefloor before most people even knew the name of the track.
I knew it for trance, but it also churned out massive progressive house records (the real progressive house, not this modern "Prog House" stuff) so we'll warm up this episode with a few house cuts before breaking away into their better known trance cuts.

The Sound of the Hoover: A Tribute to the Raw Energy of Rave
Few sounds in electronic music are as instantly recognizable and electrifying as the "Hoover" synth—an aggressive, howling lead that became a defining feature of early rave, techno, and hard house. The The Sound of the Hoover compilation series pays tribute to this legendary sound, compiling tracks that capture the raw intensity and dancefloor energy that defined an underground generation.
The Sound of the Hoover compilation series is more than just a nostalgic throwback—it highlights an era before the mainstream club success of hard house, shining a light on the pioneering work of labels like TEC that paved the way. While Nukleuz and Tidy Trax later refined and popularized the sound, TEC embodied the raw, untamed energy of underground raving.
For fans of classic rave music, high-intensity synths, and the unfiltered chaos of warehouse clubbing, The Sound of the Hoover remains essential listening—an electrifying tribute to one of dance music’s most legendary and enduring sounds.

Here we go! The biggest TRANCE episode to date! BONZAI RECORDS! One of my favorite labels out there who is still going strong! Their unique brand of trance was always noticeable - progressive in nature, and emotional in delivery, BONZAI never failed to deliver fantastic releases. Even home to one of my favorite releases of all time, THE FIRST REBIRTH.
And as a little treat, Mr OLLIE JAYE gave us our second exclusive, his remix of Loreen's "Tattoo" under his new alias, LONE WOLF.
I'm sure I'll be doing a part 2 on this one as so many missed records!

NEXT EPISODE: DJ MISJAH & X-TRAX RECORDS
A special treat for you fine folks! Recorded live in Saskatoon, Canada, circa 2001. This was an outdoor rave I put on for Canada Day. 9pm to 9am, although, the police shut it down around 7am due to noise complaints, it was one hell of a fun time!
For those that don't know, Ollie started his production career by submitting a little known track called "Eden" to Jon the Dentist's BOSCA BEATS label. Jon snapped it up and the rest is history. They eventually collaborated on some of the biggest HARD TRANCE records at the time, including "The 4th Kingdom", "Feel So Good" and "Imagination". The latter 2 were snapped up by TIDY TRAX and given a proper release and remix cycle.
Ollie and I first met in Vancouver while playing alongside Jon the Dentist for the Twisted Productions crew. We ended up DJing the same raves a few different times in Vancouver and eventually I flew him out to headline alongside Chris Liberator in Saskatoon.
It contains a hefty dose of HARD TRANCE and HARD HOUSE with minimal chemical assistance. A few of the track ID's neither Ollie nor I could remember, as you'll see.

Rave in the 90's wouldn't be complete without bringing THE PRODIGY into the mix. Reaching mainstream success for a rave / hardcore act isn't an easy feat, but after appearing on the legendary HACKERS soundtrack, THE PRODIGY certainly accomplished just that. Here's a collection of my favorite cuts from the 90's!

More and more 90's! There's just so much great music from that era! This episode, rather than drop an hour of as many tracks as I could, features a 2 hour journey through trance and techno. It's a slow burn. I did break my own rules a bit as there are a few modern drops in the set, mostly of the techno variety, but otherwise, it's all late 90's, early 00's of some of the best trance in my crate.
So, pop in those headphones, block out the world and let's go on this journey together.
