Kristen Hawkes' "Grandmother Hypothesis" provides a fascinating perspective on human evolution, menopause, and the unique social structures of humans. This theory posits that the long post-reproductive lifespan of women evolved because grandmothers played a critical role in supporting their descendants. By helping care for grandchildren and providing resources like food, grandmothers enhanced the survival and reproductive success of their families, which indirectly passed on their genes favouring longevity and cooperative behaviour. These contributions are thought to have driven distinct human traits, including increased brain size and social complexity, by encouraging intergenerational support and skill-sharing To view full show notes, more information on our guests, resources mentioned in the episode, discount codes, transcripts, and more, visit https://drmindypelz.com/ep273 Kristen Hawkes PhD MS BA examines foraging and social strategies among hunter-gatherers to shed light on human evolution. Her work includes three projects focused on life history evolution, aging in captive chimpanzees, and understanding fire’s effects on foraging payoffs, all informed by ethnographic studies of the Ache in Paraguay and the Hadza in Tanzania. Observations suggest that men’s hunting primarily serves status competition rather than provisioning, while grandmothers play a crucial role in supporting their grandchildren, especially when mothers have more children. This aligns with the grandmother hypothesis, which explains human longevity and highlights differences between humans and chimpanzees, such as longer lifespans despite similar fertility rates and a male-biased sex ratio. Mathematical modeling underscores the impact of grandmothering on post-menopausal longevity, shorter birth intervals, and social behavior. Kristen Hawkes continues to collaborate on data collection and analysis to enhance understanding of ancestral foraging strategies and aging in captive chimpanzees. Wow this is a really good interview by Dr Mindy with Sheri Salata. I resonate with every word, every experience , and understand the growth of both women. I agree with their perspectives about women coming into themselves, their power and their understanding of who they are authentically in the next chapter of their lives. I have been on a spiritual journey since my college years. In the '60's I learned transcendental meditation with the Maharishi, I did LSD with a guide in the mountains where I live. We did not want to drop out but make a better world. It sent me on my life's journey to Africa, Asia and South America.I am more content now than when I was a searching student in college. This discussion brought memories of my joyful awakening of life experienced. I truly loved listening to it. Thank you Dr Mindy. I hope you can bring Sheri Salata to talk with us in The Reset Academy Community.

I now teach but sold bulk wine and grape concentrates for nearly 20 years. I've always said: you know a good wine by how you feel the next day. I too prefer low alcohol natural, or little manipulated wines. buying from the producer is a must. industrial wines buy wine from many vineyards, each time it's transported S02 is added for the voyage and more is added just before bottling. Furthermore, more wineries are using indigenous yeasts and may not call their wine natural. I second everything you said. Thank you for supporting local farmers.

I real enjoyed this interview with Cynthia Thurow by Dr Mindy. She was very open, and wise in her comments about the mature woman, about Hormone Replacement Therapy and about women fasting for their hormones. This was a very insightful discussion and I will get 2 of her favorite books.

I wanted to say "THANK YOU " for the recent podcast with Emily Nagoski. At 52, and a gradually declining libido over the last few years I though I may never enjoy sex as much as I did in my 20s and 30s.  When I recognized that my 'breaks' were subconcious beliefs (early programming) telling me I was bad/dirty and I that I wasn't allowed to enjoy sex, I was hopeful. As a mental health counselor, I'm most accustomed to working on dysfunctional core beliefs for other people, never my own. This podcast gave me enough hope to consider what I needed to do for myself.  After clearing layers of guilt, shame, frustration and sadness I can tell you that my 'accelerator' is just fine, and I am pretty excited to get upstairs later 😄 Thank you again!
