For episode 3 of the Run For Cover Podcast, we’re joined by Pity Sex’s Britty Drake to talk about the band’s 2013 full-length debut, Feast of Love. We discuss how Pity Sex’s roots in hardcore, emo and punk lead them to create a unique sound that takes influence from shoegaze and 90’s alt-rock, but with a markedly shorter run-time than the songs of those predecessors. We touch on how & when Pity Sex began to work with Run For Cover, recording Feast of Love at Studio 4 with Will Yip, and how their first full-length signaled a sonic shift in the RFC sound. Other topics discussed in this deep dive into Pity Sex lore include magic numbers, beating genre allegations, the shortest albums in the RFC catalog, everyone in Pity Sex living together in Michigan, roommate drama v. bandmate drama, The Bat Cave, Dan Yemin & The Metal Frat, Pity Sex going on hiatus, how loss was channeled into writing Feast of Love, poetry slams, how Pity Sex got back together, Sound and Fury 2007, Grand Rapids and more Michigan takes, filming the Wind-Up music video, and much more. Episode 2 of the RFC Pod is a discussion on Citizen’s 2013 debut album Youth with guitarist Nick Hamm. Youth is a monumental album in the RFC catalog that turned ten years old last year, which the band marked with a deluxe reissue & a summer’s worth of sold out album play-through shows across the US. While the album has an enduring legacy because of its raw, emotional sound and iconic album art, none of what followed was ever what was expected for Citizen when they started playing music together.  Nick took time to chat with us while on tour this summer to reflect on how the earliest version of Citizen formed at a sleepover & how the band eventually ended up linking with Run For Cover. We also discuss recording Youth at Studio 4, what parts of the album he still loves to listen to, turning Citizen into a career band, how the band’s lifelong friendship with Turnover started & endures, the phenomenon of siblings starting bands in this scene of musicians, and what bands to check out if you like Citizen. On the inaugural episode of the Run For Cover Podcast, we’re joined by Basement guitarist & one-time RFC employee Alex Henery to discuss the band’s 2012 LP Colourmeinkindness. Basement’s second album was their at-the-time swan song LP, released only months before they disbanded - luckily for all of us, that break up didn’t last very long. Alex gives a detailed oral history of how the band came together, how they found their way onto the RFC roster & why the band made the decision to hit the breaks after Colourmeinkindness was released. He also details his move to America, how he started working at Run For Cover, hearing “Covet” for the first time, getting the band back together & what the future holds for Basement ahead of their shows this fall.
