Today on the podcast is former Notre Dame school-record holder, Ron Markezich!  On April 13, 1989, Ron ran 28:44 in the 10k to set a new Notre Dame school record that would last two decades. He was also an All-American in XC placing 11th on the grass.  In high school, Ron won state titles and did some crazy things, like running 9:05 in the 3200m as a sophomore (unheard of for the 80s).  After his successful years in the sport, he transitioned into corporate life where he was unbelievably successful, becomingan executive at Microsoft. He is currently the CEO of Lighthouse. He has four kids: Jordan, Cambria, Olivia, and Andrea. Three of them went onto run in the NCAA and Olivia is currently a professional runner for On and won an NCAA title in the Steeplchase last June. In today's conversation, Ron takes me through his years of running growing up, what training was like back in the day, his legendary recruiting visit to Notre Dame, his years at Notre Dame, transitioning out of the sport, lessons from his successful years at Microsoft, parenting, and much more! This was genuinely one of my favorite conversations I've had this year. It is thoroughly entertaining, while also beingjam-packed with wisdom. The perfect podcast for your next run. Throughout the years, some of my favorite episodes have, funny enough, been with kids from the same high school, Valor Christian.  The man who coached these athletes is Coach Greg Coplen. After hearing so many positive things about him, I knew I needed to get him on the podcast and pick his brain.  Coach Coplen coached at Valor Christian in Highlands Ranch, CO, for 10 years and is now starting his 2nd full year at Chaparral High School in Parker, CO.  He's coached five teams in four different years, at two different schools, that finished the season in DyeStat National rankings, four of those finishing in the top 10 in the country. Throughout his tenure, he's coached state champions at nearly every event in both genders.  In his first year at Chaparral High School, he helped coach the five boys' State Champions and oversaw the emergence of the girls' cross-country team, which finished third in the state of Colorado, sixth at Nike Southwest Regionals, and 27th in the country. Before last season, the Chaparral girls had not been ranked in the top 10 in the state in over 15 years. In today's conversation, Coach Coplen takes me through how to flip around a program in one year, how to instill excellence in your athletes, how to handle setbacks and disappointment, the lessons he's learned from coaching high-level athletes like Cole Sprout & Ashley Jones, the legacy he wants to leave behind in the sport, and much more!  This conversation was absolutely fantastic. I personally have many takeaways, and I hope you'll take the time to listen to it! 80 minutes of obsessing about running, discussing college, how to get the most out of your life, and so much more!  That's today's podcast.  And there's no better human jam on those subjects with than Mr. Obession himself, Zach Pogrob.  Zach has created next-level content over social media over the past few years and has amassed a following of over 1.4 million followers on Instagram alone. He's one of the best writers I've ever read, and his writings have profoundly impacted my life.  Zach has also recently fallen in love with the sport of running and has thrown himself fully into the fire of seeing how far he can go in this sport. In his first Marathon, on next to no training Zach ran a 3:16:30 Marathon. In his second marathon, Zach ran 2:55:14. He's a beast.  This podcast was one of my all-time favorites. It's just two humans who want more out of their lives having one of those late-night talks about everything on their mindown. You won't want to miss this one. It's special.  If this episode blesses you, please share with a friend!  Tap into the Zach Pogrob Special.  We did this one in person in a beautiful studio in Austin, Texas.
