Let’s face it. No-one expects a Breast Cancer Diagnosis. If we are really honest, I should imagine that most of us expect breast cancer to happen to someone else. But with Breast cancer affecting approximately 1 in 10 women worldwide, and being the most common cancer in women and the second most common cancer overall, it is very likely that if you are not directly affected by breast cancer, someone close to you will be. But a breast cancer diagnosis is not the end, and in this episode of SHE WARRIORS Trudy sits down with Monica Schembri who has not already faced breast cancer and overcome it, but is dealing with a second diagnosis. But as Monica has so often demonstrated, grace and a positive attitude makes a life changing difference in the face of adversity, not only to herself but to those around her. In this brutally honest interview, Lithuanian born Monika openly talks about her breast cancer journey, from first noticing a lump on her chest, to the moment of hearing the diagnosis. She talks through her treatment, the all clear verdict, the news of her miracle pregnancy, the marriage that didn’t survive and the cancer diagnosis second time round. But rather than a story of sadness and despair, Monika’s is full of hope. Trudy digs deeper to find the source of Monika’s trademark attitude, and in doing so, finds profoundly wise words for anyone facing a challenge, or heartbreaking news. Watch this edition of SHE WARRIORS to be inspired by an ordinary woman with an extraordinary story. The good, the bad and the hopeful. Huge thanks to the partners that make these conversations possible, Brown’s Pharmacy, Hyatt Regency Malta and Intimissimi

What’s it really like to be a young woman working in media today? It’s a world that can be unpredictable, funny, and sometimes downright chaotic, full of bloopers, slip-ups, and unexpected encounters that make for the best stories. But it also comes with very real challenges: balancing public and private life, handling criticism, and finding your own voice in an industry that isn’t always built to listen. In this episode of The SHE Word’s Young Women’s Edition, host Sasha, a former journalist who continues to work in media, is joined by three incredible guests: Naomi Scicluna, Head of Creative at FreeHour Malta and content creator; Angelica Farrugia, journalist and newscaster at TVM News; and Martha Attard, radio host and broadcasting producer at Vibe FM. Together, the four women swap hilarious on-air mishaps and behind-the-scenes stories, while also reflecting on what it means to represent young women in spaces that remain largely male-dominated.The conversation flows between laughter and honesty, from the pressure to always “look the part,” to the nerves of going live for the first time, to the joy of creating work that genuinely connects with people. It’s about boundaries, burnout, ambition, and above all, the importance of finding joy in the middle of it all.Lively, hilarious, and empowering, this episode captures what it really takes for young women in media to not just survive, but thrive. With special thanks to our sponsors: Browns, Ayurveda, Tampax, Always, Islands 8 Gin, YUE, Hyatt Regency, UBER, iCentre, and Growth Gurus

Together, they explore what drives young women to speak up, how activism intersects with journalism and art, and the unique challenges of fighting for reproductive rights in Malta. They share stories of courage, moments of burnout, and the importance of setting boundaries while continuing to use their voices as a catalyst for change. From debating a woman’s right to her own body, to the role of protest as empowerment, to navigating activism in the digital age, this conversation is both deeply personal and profoundly political. We all grew up with ideas about sex that were passed down to us — from school, family, or even the media. But how much of what we were told actually helped us understand our bodies, our choices, or our pleasure? This is THE conversation we wish we had growing up.In this episode of The SHE Word’s Young Women’s Edition, host Sasha Vella sits down with three bold, thoughtful voices — Antonella Bugeja, 23, an artist, medical student, and certified sex-ed trainer passionate about exploring sexuality through science and art; Timara Saliba, a working professional and part-time yoga teacher who believes breaking the silence around pleasure is key to empowerment; and Mariah Mangion, 21, a law student and singer-songwriter focused on shifting the narrative from glamorised sex to honest, human experiences — for a conversation that strips back the shame and gets real about what sex can and should be.Together they explore topics like consent, pleasure, pressure, confidence, and communication, reflecting on the moments that shaped their own understanding and what they wish they had been taught. With studies showing that over 50% of young women say they were never taught about pleasure in sex education, this conversation is long overdue. It’s not about judgment — it’s about curiosity, honesty, and reclaiming the conversation.Whether you're reflecting on your own experiences or still figuring it all out, this episode offers a safe, insightful space to feel seen and heard. Let’s face it, life isn’t easy. We’ve been told to just “get on with it.” That pain is normal. That hormones make us overreact. But for many young women, periods aren’t just a monthly inconvenience — they’re a debilitating, misunderstood, and often dismissed struggle. In this deeply personal and eye-opening episode of The SHE Word – Young Women’s Edition, host Sasha Vella leads an honest conversation about problem periods: cycles that derail your life, impact your mental health, and are too often gaslit by doctors, misunderstood by parents, and silenced by society.Sasha opens up about her own experience of painful, emotionally overwhelming periods that started when she was just 12 — and the years she spent not understanding what was happening in her body. She’s joined by three powerful voices, each bringing a unique perspective to the table. Sammy McEleny, 36, has been battling endometriosis for most of her life, enduring years of misdiagnosis, confusion, and chronic pain. Lara Vella, 26, is an artist who was put on the pill at 16 without a diagnosis and has since taken her healing into her own hands after fainting, vomiting, and enduring feverish pain with every cycle. And Dr Chiara Frendo Balzan, a leading gynaecologist and returning SHE Word expert, brings medical clarity to the conversation, helping to break down the myths and stigma surrounding menstrual health.Together, they explore the medical gaslighting so many women face, the toll hormonal imbalances can take on mental health, and the shame that still surrounds periods — especially in conservative cultures like Malta’s.This episode is a must-watch for every young woman who’s ever felt confused, dismissed, or alone in her menstrual journey — and for every teacher, parent, partner, and policymaker who needs to understand that painful periods are not “just part of being a woman.”With special thanks to: Brown’s, Ayur Veda Organic Wellbeing, Prohealth: Cerave, Tampax, Always, Islands 8, Hyatt Regency, YUE, UBER, iCentre, Growth GurusFind us on YouTube: www.youtube.com/@theshewordFind us on Instagram: instagram.com/the_she_word

In the latest lively, challenging, sometimes controversial, and absolutely empowering episode of the She Word Mums, host Nerissa Massa sits down with three mums to discuss the impact that motherhood has had on their sense of self and their identity. At a time when women are encouraged to build a life for themselves, be financially independent and have careers, this show asks the essential questions that impact the very identity of a woman and her role as a mum. How much does life really change after becoming a mother and what are the elements that mothers give up? What is the impact of the physical changes that happen to a woman’s body after pregnancy and birth? What are the psychological impacts on a new mum who goes through intense hormonal changes? How does a mother navigate her new role and demands without loosing herself? We attempt to answer all this and more in this episode of the She Word. This is a raw and honest conversation with lots of laughter about women sharing their personal experience on how they felt when they were tasked with the role of mum.Nerissa is joined by Tezara Saliba who is a mum, a teacher, an actress and a singer, Donna Cardona, a mum of four and founder of Mymama.mt, and Maria Muscat, a gestalt psychotherapist and mum of two. Each of the guests bring very different post childbirth experiences to the table as they sit down to discuss, and disagree, about what happens to a women’s identity post having a child – is it lost, is it the same or does it change? The show delves into the importance of looking after ourselves, and making sure that we get the right support, whether that is from a partner, family member of external help, and how this can help to still retain some of the identity that you were familiar with before. With special thanks to our amazing sponsors, Browns Health, Hyatt Regency, Pemix Distributors, Ayur Veda, Slinky & Co, La Roche Posay, Monsoon, iCentre and Myoka Spas
This episode of the She Word Mums explores Mum Rage – a topic which probably doesn’t get the attention it deserves because it is engulfed in shame.Mum rage can be described as intense feelings of anger, frustration or emotional overwhelm experienced by mothers, often in response to the mental, emotional, and physical demands of parenting. If you are a mum, you are likely to have experience this at some point or other during your motherhood journey as at least 60% of mums claim to have felt this. However, not many of us feel comfortable talking about it, or admitting it, for fear we will be judged or deemed a bad mum. This show helps to change the stigma around mum rage and helps mothers who experience this feel less alone, and understand that was is happening is not permanent, does not ruin their children, and most definitely will not make them a bad mother.Join Nerissa Massa and her three guests explore this, talk about their own experiences, and also understand how to cope after an episode of rage. We also talk about the importance of partner support, working on your own regulation, and making sure to find time for yourself as important factors to lower the episodes where you go into rage. Our three guests for this week’s show are Maria Buckle, freelance actress and mummy to 2 girls, who admits that her motherhood journey was not free of these episodes of rage, and although she feels guilty, she then chooses to repair with her children. Emma Hogg is also a mummy, but a psychotherapist who has spent years working on her own personal development and has seen the benefits of this in that she experiences far less rage than probably other mums. Her tips and her empathy will help mums feel like they can definitely overcome this with the right support and work put in.Our last guest is Danita Camilleri – most commonly known on social media as One Chick and a Yorkie, she has on many occasions spoken openly about sometimes losing it with her son. Danita talks about this happening to her more now that her son is getting older rather than in his baby days. This is a show that should not be missed – as our guests talk candidly and openly about their experiences, and ensuring that any mum listening who might feel immense guilt at her episodes of mum rage feels seen and not alone. With thanks to our amazing sponsors:Browns, Pemix, Slinky and Co, Ayur Veda, La Roche Posay, Monsoon, Hyatt Regency, iCentre, Myoka SpasFind us on YouTube: www.youtube.com/@theshewordFind us on Instagram: instagram.com/the_she_word

In this very first episode of The She Word Mums, Host Nerissa and Guests discuss one of the most common themes that surround motherhood, but a topic that is not always spoken about – Mum Guilt and Mum Judgement. Research shows that over 90% of Mums experience Mum guilt at some point or another during their motherhood journey, and most Mums also go one to experience shame and inadequacy. Surprisingly, a big part of this guilt and shame is brought about by others (Mums) passing judgement on parenting decisions. In the first Mum-focused show, the ladies dive into, and explore, what Mum Guilt means, why they are made to feel Mum Guilt, the influence of social media on Mum Guilt amongst others. Nerissa and the guest explore ways of how to mitigate guilt and have more self compassion for themselves as Mums. In this first show of this new series, host Nerissa Massa, Mum of two, is joined by Melissa Gatt, a south African living in Malta – influencer and content creator and Mum of three, Rosalie Borg – pro athlete and PE teacher and Mum of two, and Gail , a stay at home Mum of two. Together they navigate their own experience of Mum Guilt and how they are learning to move away from this to live a more fulfilled present life, by being kinder to themselves and learning to let go of the small stuff. If you are a Mum, this is a MUST WATCH! This conversation aims to make Mums everywhere feel supported, seen and more importantly not alone. If you are a Dad – this is a worthy watch too as it helps you understand your partner or Mum of your kids a little bit better! Welcome to the third edition of The SHE Word Afterhours, a less ‘censored’ edition of the show, where Trudy sits down with three guests who aren’t afraid to share their thoughts on current topics and challenges, and for whom we take no responsibility... In this mostly hilarious, sometimes serious edition, Host Trudy is joined by regulars Sue Caruana and Tez Sabina, and special guest Gianni Zammit. The conversation bounces around the topics of Christmas Decorations, Opening Crisps from the wrong end, summer and winter bed sheets, and much more with brilliantly funny exchanges and innuendo. The four contemplate their parallel lives and show intros and go on to get distracted by whether or not it is possible that Gianni’s daughter is just to extraordinary to be his. The show also takes a deeper and more serious look at the resilience of the children we are raising, the impact of the ‘participation medal culture’ and the result of over-protective parenting, whilst Gianni presents his outstanding ‘pendulum theory’.The episode goes on to take a deeper dive into AI and our dependence on technology, the impact it is having on our children, and the long term on us as adults, whilst asking the question ‘can you remember your childhood phone number?’And the show returns to the light-hearted banter as the table bonds over belly lights about the garbage, Tez’s husband’s squeaky door, Gianni’s pet hate for WhatsApp groups, Trudy’s grinch attitude, and Sue’s insistence that Tez should ‘flush the fegking toilet’Loose yourself and unwind in a brilliantly comically and surprisingly deep episode of The SHE Word Afterhours, perfect for your daily commute, background entertainment to your weekly chores, company whilst cooking, or outright relaxing entertainment, BUT DO NOT MISS this podcast GOLD.

Let’s be real for a second, keeping the sex spicy in a long term relationship is not a regular dinner time conversation, although maybe it should be. Within marriage and long term relationships, difficulties with sex, different interest levels, or a lack of physical intimacy are cited as common reasons for divorce, separation and break up, with satisfaction often declining over time. But sex in a long term relationship is important isn’t it? Well. Maybe it isn’t for everyone, and maybe it shouldn’t be. A recent study found that on average, long-term couples have sex about once a week (54 times per year). However, statistics vary widely; one study found 31% of couples have sex a few times per week, while 8% have it once a month, and 33% either have sex rarely or not at all. Let me say that again, a third of couples in long term relationships rarely have sex, or not at all. In this brilliantly entertaining and informative episode, we not only look at the magic of how to keep your sex life satisfying in all seasons of your relationship, but we look at the importance of sex in a relationship that is likely to change over years, and how to evaluate the importance of sex and intimacy. Trudy guides her guests through this enlightening and empowering conversation to touch on the challenge of falling in love over and over again with the same person, renegotiating long term relationships, Breaks vs Accelerators and the very real challenges that can interrupt the physical side of a relationship. Joining Trudy are three regular sex-perts and relationship counsellors; Anna Catania is a highly respected and recommended qualified counsellor specialised in the area of sex and relationships and offers counselling and psychotherapy to individuals and couples who are having difficulties with sexuality, relationships and intimacy. Nicola Falzon is back on The SHE Word, having brought her energy and a wealth of knowledge to our previous show’s on the topic of sex - Nicola is a Gestalt Psychotherapist & Mental and Sexual Health Advocate Marija Attard is a psychotherapist who provides psychosexual therapy, a master in Family Therapy and Systemic Practice. This episode normalises talking about sex, eliminate any shame and provide all the tools you need to navigate satisfying intimacy in a long term relationship and acknowledges the very real challenges faced by every single couple. The average person spends 90,000 hours in the workplace, around a third of our lives, it is little surprise then that the workplace represents a significant source of mental health related issues. Of the 7,000 calls a year that the Richmond Foundation receives, the majority are relational issues - that is issues connected with relationships. Other specific issues include work overload and dealing with difficult clients, which are more prevalent among women. Over 3.5 million EU workers aged 15-64 reported mental health issues in 2024, contributing to significant economic costs through lost productivity and absenteeism. Over the past few years, several issues have gathered significance as part of the workplace well being conversation; Burnout, Boundaries, Work Ethic, Well Being and the Work Life Balance to name just a few. In this episode Trudy sits down with three significant business leaders to find out how they deal with mental health in the workplace, and to ask what we as employees can do. Sarah Zammit Cutajar is the CEO of P. Cutajar & Co Ltd who have recently partnered with the Richmond Foundation to support mental health initiatives in Malta and to implement their own well-being measures.Christabelle Borg, now Christabelle Camilleri is the CEO of the industrial company V&C, an investor in Malta’s Shark Tank and then went on to launch passion project brands Health and Co and more recently co-founder of luxury brand 6FIFTYTWO.Daniela Calleja Bitar is the CEO of the Richmond Foundation and has worked with Richmond for over 25 years. The Richmond foundation was founded to support people experiencing mental health problems and those around them, throughout various aspects of life.In this powerful episode the four women discuss how to identify a colleague or employee who is struggling, toxicity in the workplace, the work life balance, generational differences, relationships at work, working environments for women and how best to support women at work. The guests also take a deep dive into Burnout, what it really is and how to spot it in yourself as well as those around you, drawing on Christabelle’s own personal experience. This show hits topics that affect almost every single one of us at some point. Watch the show to be seen and to see the others around you. This show is brought to you in association with P Cutajar and The Richmond Foundation If you would like to speak to someone about the challenges you are facing, please contact the Richmond Foundation on telephone no: 1770, email: info@richmond.org.mt or go to https://olli.chat/ for an immediate conversation.
This brilliantly entertaining show is for the women who have lived across more than one country, who have more than one identity. Women who have family stretched across continents, friends in far off places, who have split their lives across different cultures. This show is for those who have more than one home, more than one love, more than one language. In this brilliantly lively edition of The SHE Word the four women sitting at the table have one thing in common; they are all both Maltese AND British citizens. Content Creator and Marketing Specialist Katherine Neave is British born with a Maltese Nannu and moved to Malta during COVID to live, work, and experience the islands before returning to the UK after the pandemic. Kate strongly identifies with her Maltese heritage, whilst also deeply connected to England. Chelsea Bagnall-Falzon is no stranger to the Maltese Islands. Having grown up in the UK, sporting a strong Hertfordshire accent, Chelsea moved to Malta in her early twenties with her Maltese Mum to start a (small) island life and return to her Mediterranean roots. Emily Jones is a regular of The SHE Word, but what many might not know is that Emily is truly dual nationality, with an English Mum and Maltese Dad. Emily grew up in Malta, with her full high school and university education in Malta, and despite her very British accent Emily is fluent in Maltese. Trudy is the only naturalised Maltese, the British born TSW host moved to Malta 19 years ago, and chose to make Malta her home, only achieving naturalised Maltese citizenship in 2024. What she lacks in her mastering of the Maltese language, she more than makes up for with her love of the Maltese islands and passion for the history of this remarkable archipelago. The guests explore the hot topic of language, (including swearing!) - both Maltese and English. The ladies discuss dating, relationships, body count and English vs Maltese men. The four dive into identity, friendships, religion, humour, glaring cultural differences, alongside the commonalities, they cover prejudice and assumptions as well as respect and appreciation for the countries they call home. The relationship between Malta and England dates back to 1800 and like all love stories, there have been good times and tougher times in this trans continental bond. With 420,000 Maltese living across the globe, and a significant community of Maltese in the UK, along with a healthy presence of British in Malta, it is little wonder that this cultural romance has given birth to many who have both Maltese and British nationality, dual identity, women and men who live across two cultures. So many of us identify with more than one culture. Across the ages millions moved across the globe for a variety of reasons and motivations, be it love, lifestyle, work, war, finances, family and more now than ever before. Sitting across more than one culture brings a rich diversity and colourful life, but it also brings its own challenges. It is undoubtably exciting to have the opportunity to call more than one country home, but it definitely isn’t plain sailing. Tune in to hear what the guests have to say about the British and Maltese alike and how their double identity has shaped them as women.
