Episode 17: Determining if a Feasibility Study is Feasible; Deciding How to Appoint Judges; and a Surprise Topic! Recorded March 20th, 2025

We're back with three fun topics on Alaska politics, including a surprise (spoilers for that in the article sources below). Our audio got a little messed up in our opening segment, but it gets better. We cover the ongoing flood prevention issue from the melting Mendenhall Glacier. The Army Corps of Engineers is spending $4.45 million not on a feasibility study, but on a technical report to inform a later feasibility study all to prevent flooding Derik's house. We also discuss the Governor's proposed changes to how Alaska judges are selected, and we compare that to other selection processes. But first, a surprise segment as one of us reacts live on air to a proposal put before the Alaska House of Representatives.Resources used in this episode:Money for a Study to Study Flooding:https://www.ktoo.org/2025/03/19/army-corps-secures-funding-to-find-a-long-term-flood-solution-in-mendenhall-valley/https://usace.contentdm.oclc.org/utils/getfile/collection/p16021coll6/id/2544Proposed Change in Appointing Judges:https://alaskabeacon.com/2025/03/03/alaska-governor-proposes-new-method-for-picking-state-judges/?emci=c65be3e3-b5f8-ef11-90cb-0022482a9447&emdi=6a7f245c-09f9-ef11-90cd-0022482a9fb7&ceid=148052https://alaskapublic.org/news/2024-05-29/judicial-council-recommends-alaskans-keep-all-judges-including-jurist-behind-correspondence-rulinghttps://www.adn.com/alaska-news/2018/11/06/anchorage-judge-targeted-for-role-in-controversial-plea-agreement-trailing/https://www.ajc.state.ak.us/retention/retent06/landry06.pdfhttps://apnews.com/article/wisconsin-supreme-court-debate-musk-trump-30b8b9cacb02c8bc9c7c9a26e7fe376cSurprise Topic (spoilers):https://www.juneauempire.com/news/turning-governors-house-into-a-short-term-rental-proposed-by-alaska-lawmaker/

Episode 16: Crocodiles Loose in Alaska, The Right to Record, Anchorage Prosecutors Delay Charges, and Getting in Arguments Over Facebook; Recorded February 12th, 2025

The news from Alaska is starting to make us sound like Florida. We give our takes on some local issues, such as some exotic pets, a crocodile and an alligator, being tossed out in the snow up in the Mat-Su, someone in Juneau taking a dump truck for a joyride, and the governor using AI to make pictures of Alaska rather than, well, a picture of Alaska. Then we discuss the governor's proposal to ban one party consent to record a conversation. We do our best to explain why Anchorage prosecutors keep delaying charges in criminal trials. Finally, we catch up with each other about our personal lives and discuss some Facebook drama that happened recently.Sources used in this episode:Governor uses AI:https://alaskabeacon.com/2024/12/19/loch-ness-ducks-or-vampire-grebes-alaska-governor-report-for-trump-comes-with-ai-hallucinations/?emci=dc95e865-84be-ef11-88ce-0022482a93af&emdi=adb93712-e3be-ef11-88ce-0022482a93af&ceid=148052Crocodile Lost in the Snow:https://www.alaskasnewssource.com/2024/12/06/pet-croc-dead-after-being-tossed-into-snow-2-brothers-behind-bars/Dump Truck Joyride:https://www.juneauempire.com/news/stolen-dump-truck-hits-power-lines-knocks-out-electricity-on-industrial-boulevard-driver-arrested-for-dui/Proposed End to One Party Recording:https://alaskabeacon.com/briefs/gov-dunleavy-proposes-new-limits-on-alaskans-ability-to-record-conversations/?emci=85af6fc5-3fe4-ef11-90cb-0022482a94f4&emdi=8a61780c-9be4-ef11-90cb-0022482a94f4&ceid=148052Issues with Anchorage Prosocuters:https://www.propublica.org/article/anchorage-alaska-pretrial-delays-sexual-assault?utm_content=buffer8c050&utm_medium=social&utm_source=bluesky&utm_campaign=propublica-bskyandhttps://www.adn.com/opinions/2025/01/18/opinion-alaskas-criminal-legal-system-is-drowning-but-theres-another-side-to-the-story-on-trial-delays/Facebook drama:https://www.facebook.com/photo/?fbid=10235441734733345&set=a.10201958746439564andhttps://akasks.blogspot.com/2025/01/on-maga-thought-terminating-cliches.html

Episode 12 Part 3 of 3: The Israel-Gaza Conflict; Recorded on April 21st and 24th, 2024

In part 3 of this episode, we do a deep dive into the history and politics surrounding the ongoing Israel-Gaza conflict. Episode 10: The Bar Wars in the Last Frontier and New Rules for Robots. Recorded January 5th, 2024

We're back after an extended break! And they didn't change the locks to the recording booth on us. We keep things light and fun in this episode with a variety of mostly local stories we felt deserved more attention. We've got an update on the local APC owned by the Juneau police, discuss some prime downtown real estate under consideration for development, and how expensive even a destroyed house in Juneau can be. Dispensaries can now give out free weed samples, and we gossip about the budding friendship between Senators Murkowski and Romney and Mitt's inability to cook salmon. Our big stories this week were a small tweak to a law that allows for distilleries in Alaska to stay open one hour later, and our top 10 favorites from the Biden administration's 10 new proposed AI regulations. Episode 9: Are monopolies bad? Are kids going to hell? Where are all the single women at? Plus a review of Scotland. Recorded October 25th, 2023

We do deep dives into three topics in this episode. First up, the proposed Kroger Albertsons supermarket chain merger would leave us with fewer local options. We debate what that does to the economy and if it's the role of government to step in. Next, we review a survey done on Christian 'cornerstone beliefs' of American children and how many are rejecting the core tenets of the religion. Finally, we discuss the rise in single-parent households, the factors that lead to it, and the effects it's having on society. All that and we catch up on our lives and recent travels. Episode 8: Is cash still king? Do kids need to be fed? Do workers need rights? How much can we spend on an election? Do we need a city hall? Can we just ban all guns? Recorded September 17th, 2023

We get into several deep discussions on a wide range of topics in this episode! We start with an update on the bill to ban PFAS in Alaska, then move on to a proposal to ban cashless businesses in LA. We discuss Massachuesett's new law that taxes millionaires to fund school lunches. Then it's all things Alaska ballot measures. A rejected measure would have ensured open primaries if the current voting system is ever repealed. The next reinstates campaign finance limits, and another would raise the minimum wage and ensure some worker protections. Also, a group trying to get a ballot measure to repeal ranked choice voting got caught starting a church to get around taxes on donations. Then we discuss the proposed new city hall in Juneau, and we actually agree about it. We catch up on each other's lives and check in on what we've both been up to. Finally, we talk about the New Mexican governor's attempt to ban guns and have another classic Sam and Derik Show gun debate. We're back in the recording booth with a range of topics this week, and strangely, we agreed on some? The Alaska Governor vetoed a bill defining Ebikes and we discuss if that was the right call. The mayor of Anchorage suggests buying unhoused people plane tickets out of town and we give our takes. Next, we talk about the country song everyone's been debating, "Try That In a Small Town." We try out a new segment on discussing the state of the Republican presidential primaries. Then we discuss a proposal by Democrats to curb investors buying up too many houses. Finally, we debate the inheritance tax. We also catch up with each other, so stay tuned for everything from parenting to Shakespeare! Episode 5: The SCOTUS Episode! We Talk All the Recent Rulings, Plus WI Funds Education for 400 Years, Angoon Students Launch a War Canoe, and Bolsonaro 8 Year Elections Ban; Recorded July 9th, 2023

We do a deep dive into the Supreme Court, and it's our best episode ever. And by best, we mean longest. But first, Wisconsin's governor gets creative with a line-item veto to increase education funding for the next 400 years. Angoon Students launch a war canoe for the first time since 1882 (A note about an event mentioned in the discussion, the burning of the native village in Juneau happened in 1962, not the "20s or 30s"). Former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro is banned from running for office again by the Brazillian court for the next 8 years due to lying about the election. We also catch up about our lives and even have a brief discussion on women's classic literature. Then we get into all the recent rulings by the Supreme Court, and possible changes that could be made to the court. The rulings we discuss include allowing a website designer to discriminate against LGBTQ people, ending affirmative action, striking down gun restrictions, and forcing student debt repayment. Then we discuss the ongoing corruption allegations and suggested reforms that would make the court less polarized.
