I am tired of college groups and youth groups focusing on talking about dating advice and how-to-be-better like it's the central message. It's not. There is no Jesus there. The gospel has to come first, or there is no desire to want to live differently. We have to get the order right. The gospel has to transform and wow us, then in RESPONSE to that news, we want to worship God. If someone doesn't have a right view of the gospel they don’t have a right view about anything.We’re all looking for fulfillment and for a purpose. It’s no shock that our world is fallen and that we live in a broken world with broken people with broken systems. What’s wrong with the world? You. Me. We have hope though. “The resurrection and the life hasn’t forgotten you… He is coming for you.”
This verse is in every Christian school's gym, it’s on Tim Tebow‘s tattoo, but that doesn’t reflect what Paul was actually writing to the Philippians in this letter. He was not saying “We’re gonna win because God will give us strength.” He was saying, “No matter what happens if I win or if I lose, I can handle it all because I have that firm foundation in Jesus and Jesus is enough."
If you haul the American Dream into the presence of God, you can count on one thing…He will ask you to leave it at the door. Recall the rich young ruler. By all appearances, he was a sincere man. But he wanted to journey with Jesus and bring his stuff. So, when Jesus asks him to leave his stuff at the door, the young man chooses instead to walk away from Jesus.
