Description
The Shakedown Archives is Grateful Dead history, sourced from the books and the tapes. Each documentary takes one story (a song, a show, a person, a strange night in the band's thirty years) and follows it through the archive: interviews, setlists, liner notes, fan-club mailings and the recordings. Shakedown Conversations adds long-form talks with the writers, musicians and Deadheads who were there, or who have spent decades digging. First up: journalist Toby Rogers on the jazz underneath the Dead. New episodes weekly. Full videos and the Shakedown Observatory at theshakedownarchives.com.

Tonight, the winter the Grateful Dead made the Carousel Ballroom on Market Street their own room, and the night Jerry Garcia grabbed Phil Lesh at the top of a dressing-room stairwell. Lesh had frozen on stage, still grieving Neal Cassady, and nobody who was there agrees which night it was or what happened on those stairs. The tape was rolling, and those Carousel reels were spliced with studio sessions into Anthem of the Sun, the strangest record the band ever made. A long, calm story for a long night.CHAPTERS0:00 Settle in1:35 The Carousel Ballroom6:36 Ron Rakow and the glass doors11:48 How big was the room16:56 Bear's tapes, always rolling22:12 The band and Warner Bros.27:16 Neal Cassady32:19 The first live FM broadcast37:31 Which night was it42:49 Eight bars of silence47:44 At the top of the stairs52:41 The free show on Haight Street57:41 Sorry, man1:02:37 A tape too hot to place1:07:34 Building a collage1:12:47 Dan Healy at the mixing desk1:17:47 The producer who walked out1:22:53 Mickey Hart and two drummers1:28:02 Tom Constanten's prepared piano1:33:23 That's It for the Other One1:38:52 Alligator and Caution1:44:06 The trip east to record1:49:15 The record comes out1:54:33 The remix1:59:24 Can you bottle a live night2:04:37 Drifting offThe Shakedown Archives Sleep Stories are long, calm, spoken-word journeys through the real history of the Grateful Dead, made to help you fall asleep and stay asleep. Pigpen died in March 1973. The Grateful Dead spent 22 years trying to leave his ghost behind. The setlist data says they failed — 791 times. That's not metaphor. From 1973 through 1979, zero performances of Pigpen's narrow blues-and-R&B basket — Smokestack Lightnin', Turn On Your Lovelight, Little Red Rooster, Wang Dang Doodle. From 1980 through 1995: 791 performances. Including the second song of their final show at Soldier Field on July 9, 1995.This is the case that the Grateful Dead spent 22 years trying to escape Ron "Pigpen" McKernan's blues vocabulary and failed. Not as nostalgia. As structural fact. Keith Godchaux's piano couldn't hold those songs. When Brent Mydland arrived at Spartan Stadium on April 22, 1979 with a Hammond B-3 — the same instrument family Pigpen had played — the door reopened. By 1984 the flood was on. By 1995 the band couldn't frame either set of their last show without returning to Pigpen's musical world.Featuring Jerry Garcia on what the band lost, Bob Weir's "good friend of mine" line in Good Lovin', Betty Cantor-Jackson hearing the Leslie speaker on the 1974 Winterland tapes, and what Howlin' Wolf and Chess Records had to do with the way the Grateful Dead actually formed.Chapters:0:00 Betty Hears Pigpen's Ghost in '741:30 The Argument: A 22-Year Musical Haunting3:00 The Blues Foundation Pigpen Built5:00 March 1973: Garcia's Broken Leg7:00 Seven Years Without Pigpen's Songs9:00 Brent Mydland Brings Back the B-311:00 The 791 Tributes: The Ghost ReturnsSources:- The Grateful Dead Live Music Archive: https://archive.org/details/GratefulDead- Ron "Pigpen" McKernan: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ron_%22Pigpen%22_McKernan- Brent Mydland: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brent_Mydland- David Gans, "Conversations with the Dead" (Da Capo Press)- Rock Scully, "Living with the Dead" (Little, Brown)🎙️ The Shakedown Archives — thesis-driven Grateful Dead documentary#GratefulDead #Pigpen #BrentMydland
How Phil Lesh Quietly Rebuilt the Grateful Dead Sleep Story: after coming back from a liver transplant, instead of putting the old band back together, he gathered a pool of friends for a few nights on a San Francisco stage. Donna Jean Godchaux back after a long absence, Steve Kimock in the Garcia chair after Bob Weir first said no, and Trey Anastasio and Page McConnell of Phish crossing their own band's line. Soft sleep-story pacing for falling asleep — about two hours.
